I saw one of these for sale on ebay from the US. I was tempted to buy one but the shipping cost was huge. Then I realised that it was made for imperial material, so, I thought I would just make one for myself in a metric style.

I started to make one of these years ago for a project, I drilled the holes and made the dies I needed for the project and then never got back to it. But every so often I use it and have to drill new holes and make new dies for the size I need. One day, years from now it will be complete when I do enough projects with enough different sizes. Great project!

To make the swing arm move easier while bending, make a small bushing to fit over the bending pin that fits in the swing arm holes. Doing that enables the bushing to roll against the stock being bent instead of having a friction type contact with the stock. It makes a huge difference! I love the project! Thanks for posting it! Subbed!

i have one of those too, but i just used two holes, the first is the fixed center hole and the one for the dies is an adjustable hole................................... very nice Jig Gary, probably worth pricing one of those sets up, might get a few offers.

Good job, Gary. I bought one rather than build my own, and I think you designed yours well. The one thing I don't like about mine is that the holes don't pass all the way through so you're constantly getting them filled with scale and mud dauber wasp nests. As heavy as the main plate is, well, it's not very easy to always be flipping it over to knock the crud out. Very good thinking to drill the pilot hole all the way through. You'll find that a real blessing in the days ahead. And, you're right, they are really pricey!

I tie a string to the center pin (mine was 5/8 " round). I wound the string around the center pin. Tied my silver pencil to the end of the string started the drawing spiral around until I got to the outside of the plate. Then I marked 1" center punches around the spiral. Might not be the right way but it works for me. I drill the holes 5/8" on all my tooling. Sometimes I borrow from one jig to another one. I drilled a couple of my discs off center. That way it pinches against another disc and holds what you are bending.

Excellent video, I've made similar bending jigs with the outer pin oversize and turned down eccentric to fit the hole. Example: make your pin from 16mm and turn down to 12mm, offset in your 4 jaw chuck. You'll have 4mm of adjustment and the cam action will help lock the piece in when bending.

to make a pattern use gasket paper and two ballpien hammers to transfer to gasket paper - use round end of ballpien over hole to transfer hole to paper by tapping round end down hammer - once you get first hole use pin to hold in place to continue
@garyhuston

making the pattern isn't the problem, transferring it to a CAD program is!
@Alanbataar
@Alanbataar 2 года назад
@@garyhuston I know this is a pretty old video, but if you photograph the paper transfer from the above-mentioned technique, along with an item of known size, you can scale the photo precisely, then use it as a template for CAD.

Nice jig Gary, you can improve on the 'F' fork by adding a roller bearing on the pin you welded the wing nut to. You can see it trying to spin on it's own as is, the bearing will smooth things out for you. Kind of similar to the precursor of the Hossfeld bender. Speaking of, machine mart do a clone of the Hossfeld for about a hundred quid or so. Have you seen them? Not as many options in diameter of the bends but a good starting point, and you have a lathe to make more dies if you wanted, they also do 90 degree bends too.

@@garyhuston www.machinemart.co.uk/p/clarke-ccb1b-compact-bench-mounted-parts-bende/ I've had the floor mounted version for years, but sadly don't have a lathe to make more dies for it. Still a handy bit of kit though. Comes with round dies in 25, 32, 38, 44, 51, 64, and 76 mm plus the right angle die. They say it'll bend flat bar cold from 8 x 32mm to 7 x 51mm and round or square bar up to 16mm. Does a lot thicker if it's hot, you just have to watch getting the hardened pins too hot.

I'm trying to understand why you didn't have the holes laser cut at the same time as the other cutting. Surely all the working out could have been done on card and transferred to the cad drawing. What am I missing? Given the range of material sizes, would it not be better to have one locking pin hole for each size die and a range of sleaves for the locking pin to accommodate the varying material thickness? This way you only have one to two locking pin holes in the plate for each die size. I love the idea of having a similar jig and plan to make one as well/ Just trying to simplify it and make it as cost effective as possible.
@garyhuston
@garyhuston 5 лет назад
I did try to draw it out in CAD, not to get the holes cut but to make a paper pattern I could just transfer to the plate but it was just too time consuming, it turned out quicker with the punch tool I made. The reason I didn’t get them cut is that they are not accurate enough and the process hardens the edge so trying to file them out if they are a little off is almost impossible. I had the center holes cut and ruined a carbide burr trying to open them up just a fraction. I think I know what you mean , have one hole 60mm from the edge of each die then have a series of sleeves getting fatter to reduce the gap back down fro 16mm to 3mm. I think that would work but it wouldn't give you the possibility to do multiple bends at once. you could only do the one. I like your idea but I think this way is much more versatile.
@mrkrusher29
@mrkrusher29 5 лет назад
@@garyhuston I think I can tell you what Nathan means. Instead of potentially drilling up to 7 holes per die (for the 7 different stock thicknesses you intent to use) simply drill one hole per die marked from the 16mm piece of stock. You then make up difference by mounting another die/sleeve on the locking pin/hardened steel dowel. So for working with 2mm stock in this arrangement you would use your current die for the bend radius and then another die/sleeve on the other dowel with a radius of 19mm (14mm between the pin and the edge of the die plus 6mm for the dowel minus 1mm of 'wiggle room'). This would require a set of /dies/sleeves for each size of stock you intend to use of increasing size for decreasing stock size but would have saved you a bit of drilling. Hopes this has cleared things up and not made it worse.
