Brilliant explanation. Clear, articulate, on point, no sidetracks. Subscribed.

That is great, this month I had to create an Current Month vs Previous Month (even if it not appears in my bar graph), the result was table callculations and add the previous month in the date filter only for my comparisson I think this method can replace that (or part of, because my CM/PM value is a countd)

Fantastic Tim thanks so much. Nowhere on the Tableau site can I find this info.

Hi Tim, are you going to go over the LOOKUP() part of this feature? Ive been trying to get it to work with filling in strings but I cant get it to iterate, it will only pull in a single row based on the lookup, likely because I'm not referencing the current row, I'll need to play around with it to see if I can get if/then or case statements to work with the {partition} function.

Hey! What is the expression you're using at the moment? Are you trying to "fill down" strings? I actually helped build this feature so I may be able to help you :)

@@alecmalcolm1924 Hi Alec, I'm attempting to fill a string column with nulls with the last available value, then continue to fill that value until a new change appears. Im using {Partition [Partition value]: {Orderby [Orderbyvalue] asc: Lookup([missingvalue], -1)} } as the base, but cant seem to make that calculation work with more logic or continue to fill. Essentially Im trying to do IFNULL([MissingValue], LOOKUP(Missingvalue],-1) along the partition. I would also like to use the values from lookup results in a logical manner, meaning compare values in the current row to the previous row and if different add a value or string.

@@DrJuanTaco Thx for the detailed explanation...totally understand what you're trying to do. Unfortunately, the LOOKUP function won't be able to accomplish your use case due to underlying implementation limitations. However, I'm excited to say we have additional functionality coming very soon (actively being worked on) which should address your "Fill Down" needs. Keep an eye out for it!

@@alecmalcolm1924 Thanks alot Alec! I'll keep an eye out! I worked with Libby a little bit when the multi row thing was in very early development, feel free to reach out again if you guys need a Guinea pig!

that is nice, but i guess shift a rows group by any categorical data order by date types. Result is a current transaction_date /field/, next transaction_date /field/, previous transaction_date /field/ all in one table.

Great new feature. I wish we were able to edit directly form the formula window.

Can I ask why? I thought that too but actually if I always had an interface like this for call functions I think I’d make less mistakes and have a much better way of handing over work. That said being able to tweak the function does appeal to the tinkering itch.

@@TableauTim, I agree with you about making fewer mistakes. But I like opening the formula box and learning from behind-the-scenes code.

@@TableauTim SPLIT() function is a great example here. Although Prep makes it easy for us to perform the task, you'll never really know what you are doing unless you open the formula window and play with the parameters.

{ PARTITION [gategory] :{ ORDERBY [Order date month] ASC: LOOKUP([Order date month],-1)}} - maybe that is a solution. Nice. I see 😊
