Brief: To create a library of memories in Vauxhall, London.
.
Chosen memory: Upon discovering former plague pits (mass burial sites) and plague houses (detention houses for infected) in Vauxhall, the memory of the 1665 London plague was chosen.
The resulting design relies on architecture and materiality to offer the user a multi sensory journey through the London plague. Using materials such as Vantablack (darkest black in the world) to recreate the loneliness and darkness of being trapped in a plague house and different textures of concrete in tight ramps for circulation, to convey feelings of discomfort.
.
The highlight of the design is a central column, inspired by the plague stone which was a mini well of water left outside plague houses. Those inside the house would throw coins into this mini well, which people outside would collect and replace with food for the detained. This design replaces the water with a central fire instead, marking the end of the London plague brought by the Great Fire of London in 1666. The central fire is also used to heat the building and generate energy.
