We are in a D2 drought for the second time this year, if it wasn’t for our Johnson Grass we would be feeding hay. Love those warm season grasses! Praying for rain for us both brother.

Thank you thank you! Hang in there, my friend! 🤠Last year our September pastures were just pure joy, just amazing. You just never know what kind of hand you’ll have to play out here. Funny, but I really think that’s one of the things that keeps me comin back every year…it’s always a new challenge!

thank you for another video! Just got some livestock dogs today and picking up my first sheep (8, 7 Ewes and 1 Ram) next Saturday, wish me luck! My job isn’t very reliable anymore so hoping to be able to replace it as soon as possible, all goes well I’ll be getting some cows and more chickens too.

Wow! The numbers don’t lie. Makes sense about the water test. Like a sponge. Your ground is holding moisture so it is slower to absorb additional. We got 1/4” yesterday but that’s it in 3 weeks. Discernment and trust in the Lord enables you to move with confidence. Praying for y’all.

we are in the same boat here in salvisa, ky. D2 drought and scorching heat. We've gotten less than 4 inches total all summer. For the 3rd year in a row we are starting to feed our sheep hay in september, only this year hay is way up in price because local farms only got one cutting. It's hard not to get discouraged, but on a bright note I dug my sweet potatoes yesterday and got a bumper crop. I guess they loved the heat, and I grew them under black plastic based on your advice and it was a huge success! Almost no vole damage! Thanks for your videos, I am always encouraged by them!

Thanks for your videos Nice job on the tests, if you haven't already i would try doing the infiltration test in different areas you may just have a bad spot possibility more clay or something, also the dry area may be great soil and when dry acts like a sponge sucking the water up quickly in the surrounding soil once below the ring God bless and we enjoy the videos and His word 😊

Loved your Scripture and I remembered slightly different translation and whatcin school they said about the Hebrew. Bottom line, we are trusting in God's faithful love, his Covenant love. Just as God is asking you to be a good steward in this drought, His side is faithful as well. He is watching over your family. When I was young this was exciting, leadng me to prayer. I am going on a 2 week vacation and time of prayer. I will begin by thanking the Lord reminded me His Faithfulness

My brother, that grass is looking great for drought conditions. We’re at D2 and have been feeding hay for a month! Trying to get the ewe and ram lambs sold to bring down that stocking rate but I think the hard conditions are slowing sales. We waited 3 years for the registered St. Croix and now I have 11 ewe lambs and 11 ram lambs just growing fat :) We’re really watching the current activity in the Gulf because it appears to be on track our way, the good Lord willing. Thanks for the scripture, as always. Cheers, Dan and Rochelle.

Have you considered feeding spouted grain in times of drought? I saw it suggested by Dan Kittredge who’s a smart guy. By sprouting, enzyme inhibitors are broken down making the grain more digestible, starch is converted to simple sugars and nutrient uptake for your animals improved. You could experiment on the chickens by giving them both whole and sprouted grain, they should favour the later.
@birchfieldfarming
@birchfieldfarming День назад
I’ll never give grain to ruminants, as the blessing is their interaction with and fattening on grass. Building a farm on grass vs diesel/oil as least gives us a shot at the times ahead…but it’s something we could certainly try for the chickens. Our chickens are pretty content with kitchen scraps and a little layer feed tho. I suppose it’s all about context and what you have time for. I enjoy listening to Dan as well, and thanks for sharing!

Hey just a thought but maybe this fall when the rain does hit, is to move them through the lots again even if for just an hour or so with some hay and overseed. That would allow them to trample the seed into the ground for better soil contact and prepare it for next spring. Also considering putting some Sorghum Sudan grass in the garden soon for a fall/winter feeding to the sheep, your thoughts?
@birchfieldfarming
@birchfieldfarming 16 часов назад
Great ideas, and thanks for sharing. We already do this, only we use an overwintering cover crop mix. Just sowed a bunch yesterday before the rain moved thru. Come March, it’s the only thing green, so we’ll turn our very pregnant ewes out in it and gives them an excellent boost!
@obsidian73
@obsidian73 14 часов назад
Great idea. What is your overwintering crop mix?
@birchfieldfarming
@birchfieldfarming 13 часов назад
@@obsidian73Rapeseed, cereal rye, winter barley, black oats, winter peas, hairy vetch, Balansa clover…42% is the cereal rye, 16% barley, 16% oats, peas and vetch are about 8% each. Had great success with the mix over winter as long as it’s sown early enough. We’re border-line too late now.

I'm down in a dryish pocket in North TX, and we always move into severe to exceptional drought status by mid-August. We are a very small homestead running dairy sheep. This causes us over grazing issues once the 100F+ temps set in late July. The fall rain cycle has been delayed this year, so our pasture looks terrible. I have started to supplement with some hay and tree hay ( willow is an amazing plant). BUT, having done this several years, what I know is just a light over seeding with some cover crops and rain will cause the pasture to spring back. It never fails. Once the fertility is established, your foundation is set. P.S. we just got some rain here. Hopefully, the rain cycle for this fall will begin again. God is good, and nature is wonderful!

You use the sacrifice paddock for lack of land?
@birchfieldfarming
@birchfieldfarming День назад
Not sure if you mean during drought or our over-wintering paddock…There’s nothing bouncing back during drought, so feeding hay in a sacrifice paddock keeps everything else intact until rain arrives. Our over-wintering paddock has auto waterer that doesn’t freeze.
@MarkStevens-m9x
@MarkStevens-m9x День назад
@@birchfieldfarming ok I don’t really know anything
@birchfieldfarming
@birchfieldfarming День назад
@@MarkStevens-m9xNo worries, the sacrifice paddock is just b/c nothing is growing, and depending on time of year we don’t want to severely overgraze and create the negative compounding effects, plus they need hay so ideally the sacrifice paddock is nearby the hay supply to cut labor.
