Great video and explanation.. I personally believe to spend the extra money on these that is something you know is reliable and piece of mind it won’t bite you in the ass in the middle of a live gig.
Very informative video (as well as your others on this topic). Thank you for creating them! I was surprised to learn that you can you a normal Sennheiser SK as a wireless guitar transmitter.
I actually did my own cables from 3.5mm to TS.. and it doesn't need the screw as you mentioned. Worked perfectly. I think it just has to do with wiring it correctly or you'll encounter with what you have.
@@ScottUhlMusic yeah, it's weird that you mentioned that but I guess maybe it's one of the many mysteries in life haha Anyhow informative video! Keep it up!
@@ScottUhlMusic it's in the way the cable is wired. The tip from the 1/4 has to be wired to the ring ( middle) of the 1/8 stereo jack. The tip and sleeve are wired together on the 1/8 to the sleeve of the 1/4 jack. Then you will have no noise even if the 1/8 jack doesn't have the lock on it.
Fun fact you can turn that into a In earn monitor system. You will only need a headphone amp. I used it with a power play p2 but there are some cheap rechargeable headphone amps on eBay for like 16 bucks
That is true! Although I have this as my sennheiser IEM hack that works amazing and I use it probably more than my actual sennheiser system haha: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0WT9fHqVzZg.html
It should not be used as a stereo IEM system. I have a video on a portable IEM system here though: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-0WT9fHqVzZg.htmlsi=T96QV1d4Bemig51g
@@fareedalstonllc The Sennheiser EW100 guitar system is just like this, except it has a standard receiver that plugs into power. This is the portable option
Great informative video, I just realized I could use my G4s for guitar I have only used them for lavs. and I tried it without the Sennheiser cable and was getting that terrible sound when changing volume up and down. I will have to pony up the 30 bucks for the cable. They are back ordered on amazon so hoping B&H will come through as I have two gigs next weekend. Thanks for the great info!. Liked and Subbed.
Thanks! And yeah, that sound is awful with “normal cables” which is the only downside. I have about 4 of the regular cables, and one in each of my guitar cases so I never forget one!
Hi, thanks for the informative video...just finding this now a few years later. I did have one question here and that is, if I search to buy a Sennheiser EW 100 or 500, all the listings show me a box and then either 1 or 2 of these units here you have in your video. I'm a little confused as to whether what you are showing here is a transmitter or receiver. These look like transmitters, but you seem to be using one as a transmitter and one as a receiver. Would love some clarification here. Thank you! I'm trying to find a solution for wireless transmission from DJ mixer to PA speakers. Thanks!
Yeah they all look the same with sennheiser stuff. it’s pretty confusing. They normally sell this as a “lav mic” set, or a film set… and then I get the cable for it to work with my guitar.
Really found your videos to be quite informative. I decided on going with the EW 100 Instrument Set, so thanks for the tips. I'm now looking for a solution for vocals. Sometimes I use a hand held mic, other times a headset mic. Would welcome your thoughts on getting a 2nd EW 100 and your thoughts on both types of mics that work with this system. Thanks!
I usually really like Shure microphones personally. But that’s just me. The Beta 87 is the mic I always use for vocals. I’ve done reviews on basically all of their wireless. BLX is great entry, SLX is a good one if you want the next level up, and ULX is rock solid 👍
I need to send music from an iPhone wirelessly to a distant placed audio mixer. Can I use this for that purpose or is there any alternate gears available for that purpose. Iam a magician I use my music tracks played from an iPhone and sometimes the audio console is situated Far away and my phone is on stage ...pls help for a solution..
Yes this would work for that 👍 you would need to have a 3.5mm adapter to connect to your phone. I do like this one more now since this video came out but both are great: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-w2lR9TditUc.htmlsi=E2-aBbkmXagniWqk
thx for such a comprehensive video. I have the EW 100 system with the Sennheiser 3.5 to instrument jack cables. I scanned for the most open frequencies and set my channel on the receiver & transmitter. I am running the receiver into my pedal board. Signal chain being: tuner, Rat Pro Co2, Maestro fuzz, Phase 90, Maestro delay out to Orange 35LDX here at home or a Orange super crush 100 for gigs. I am not getting anything thru my amp. I have run thru every channel available. Any tips?
This system is not an in ear monitor system. However, if you are looking for a good entry level one, I usually recommend this one: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-dJL_zI2drRQ.html
Thank you for the trick! I was wondering what could I get for a bass wireless since I don't have a bass amp/cab anymore. Everything is on my pedalboard now (preamp/cab sim), so the rackmount receiver is not ideal for me. I'm in a 5 piece band and 4/5 have wireless IEM (XSW, PSM200 and PSM300) and our singer have a Shure wireless mic. I don't know what model I should get between the GLXD16+, the EW112p or the EW512p. The GLX is obviously the cheaper, but the difference between the 100 and the 500 is only +/-150$. Is the 500 serie really worth it over the 100 ? Thanks 🙏
Hi Scott! Another question about that one: have you tried it with active pickups? Cannot find any info in specifications on Sennheiser website about it.
Violin question: I have an electric Jordan violin with a Starfish pickup (it is not as hot as the Barberas I have in my other Jordans). I bought the 500 through your link. Trying it out, the highs are pretty high and that can get unpleasant on the high strings, as you know. I am adjusting between the AF out on the receiver and the Sensitivity on the transmitter. Do you happen to have any quick numbers or advice for settings? Jordans don't have a shrill problem but this wireless wants to put shrill in there. I noticed the same treble boost with the G10 FWIW. Thank you for your videos. This is my third purchase caused by them - very helpful, thank you.
I honestly don’t know. The two violin players I play with actually both ended up buying these and they sound great. It really could be a number of things. You can also apply eq in post. Sound problems can be coming from so many places, you do just have to mess with levels. Set the sensitivity down a bit is where I would start
This was a very helpful video. I am in the market for a new system because I am having issues with my fairly new Sennheiser XSD instrument system $300 which does run on 2.8. I was wondering what you thought about the Sennheiser XSW 1 548 - 572 for $249. It is not as portable as the EW 100 but I wonder what you thought about that value? I already bought cheap (I guess $300) and now Im buying twice. Should I just spend the $600 or try the XSW. Either way thanks!
If you do not need the portability, it's not a big deal about that (I usually gig with multiple arrangements, so it's helpful for me). But to me it just depends on how much and often you gig. It's my full time job, so the $600-$900 is worth it because now I have THE wireless I need and I don't have to worry about it. That's not necessary for someone who does it more for a hobby. I have not tried the XSW 1, but I definitely trust Sennheiser stuff. Either one would be good, it's just the EW one will be better. It's up to you if you need that much more reliability/quality or not. But Sennheiser is always a plus in my book
@scott Uhl I notice I used G3 and used G4 too, I'm getting the same result the signal is too low I'm using as i compare the guitar cable to it, the difference was 14db difference i had to bump up the preamp on my 18i20 to match the gain that my guitar cable is giving, i'm using the right and original cables for the transmitter too but still gain too low.
This is super strange.... are you using to with xlr for some reason? Also, do you have the sensitivity turned down for any reason? Those are the main two issues I could see. But this is my MAIN wireless, and I have no problems like that.
@@ScottUhlMusic just guitar, when your are using it for guitar what is your usual sensitivity? coz when its on -20 its distorting already, then i reduce it more but gain is too low then.
@@williamroyagoncillo Mine is set to -36 for sensitivity. I'm really stumped by this one... because this has never been a problem for me with this wireless.
It’s good with Hi Z if you use the right cables, and no it’s the same thing just with a lav mic instead of an instrument cable. I have cables for this for a lav, instrument, and xlr
Hi Scott. I went to the Sennheiser EW 500 last year after watching your videos and struggling with Shure and Line 6 , 2.4 gHz systems for my electric guitar rig and acoustic rig. They were both unreliable for the types of venues we play. Lot's of interference and drops. The EW 500 has been great! I did go back to using a cable for my Acoustic rig but would really like to get back to wireless. The EW112 system would seem to work best for me to mount the receiver on my acoustic pedal board. Question is whether you have heard of any issues with using this system with electrified acoustic guitars? I go into a tuner > preamp/IR modeler > FOH for the acoustic. Thanks for your help.
Hi Scott! What is the difference between portable and stationary 500 series receivers, except being battery-powered and obvious form factor difference?
That’s the difference 😊 portable and battery powered. Most people worded the standard version because they have it on a pedal board or something, but I wanted a portable one because I play in multiple bands and use it for different reasons.
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks man! I wasn't sure if portable lacks any features except for not being dependent on batteries. I concluded it is not from your videos and comment above.
I have the G4. G3 and 4 are very similar. And they are cross compatible too. They are just the newer models. They both are great. You can get a G2 as well if you find it cheaper. 👍
Great video Scott. I have subscribed and will order through your link. I presently have the XVive U2 for my bass guitar. Last night at a gig I kept dropping. They are 4 years old so perhaps the batteries are getting old, or I had the interference you spoke of. I have a G&L bass that I can do as active or passive. I have never been able to use the active feature with the XVive. I get a whining noise so I just have played passive. But even with that, it seems at sometimes at a gig I will get some background noise. My question is whether this Sennheiser EW 100 is able to be used with an active bass. I know some systems say explicitly not to be used with active but I cannot see whether this is an issue with the Sennheiser. Thank you.
Yes I’m almost positive you can use these with an active bass 🤘 this system is amazing if you want a very very reliable wireless system. You’ll definitely enjoy it!
@@rickzimmerman1821 I'll have to mess with the new ones. But whichever one has more available frequency options is the one I personally would go with. Sennheiser always makes great stuff.
I didn't know you could use personal monitors for guitars. I use the Shure bodypacks and didn't know. Do you have any video that shows how to setup that? The frequencies and all that? Or you just plug the guitar to the bodypack?
@@juand.g.2602 You should use a wireless instead. I'm not sure why you would get IEMs for a wireless. Especially since most IEM's have a transmitter that needs to be plugged in to work. Maybe I'm missing something, but it doesn't make sense what you are asking. If you would like in ears, I would get an in ear system. If you would like a wireless, get a wireless system.
@@juand.g.2602 That doesn't make sense. Why would you not get a wireless system for a wireless and an In ear monitor system for an in ear monitor system? I'm confused. Most IEM's have a transmitter that requires power... so it wouldn't be wireless at all.
Hi Scott! I'm a filmmaker and I have some wireles rode for lav and I'm trying to use it for my In ears monitor system. Do you know if this might screw my equipment?
@@ScottUhlMusic sorry for my broken english, let me try to explain myself. I have a wirless go (from Rode) and I want to use it for monitoring my band. I'm afraid that some kind of gain from the wireless go or the mixer will damage my equipment.
No worries. So I would definitely get an IEM system if you are wanting to use these for in ear monitors. These are more for sending wireless for instruments or speakers or clip on mics.
I've got this same setup, it works great when plugged straight into the amp, but my tuner gets stuck on a G, and it wont push through the pedal setup to the amp....any idea whats causing that issue?
I cannot imagine why that would happen with the wireless. It doesn’t do that when you plug in a cable? And you are using the correct type of cable with the sennheiser? The 3.5mm with the screw and to 1/4”?
Hey. I recently started using G3 EW100 with my guitar. I had a few G3 sets which I was using on film /ad shoots( that's what I do professionally ). I didn't receive the cable you are using with my G3 and am experiencing the volume pot noise you mentioned. The cable I got has a locking connector on one side(goes into transmitter) but the other side is a 3.5 mm jack. I'm using a 3.5mm to 1/4' adaptor to plug it into my guitar. I guess I'll have to purchase the cable from sennheiser to get ride of the noise. What do you suggest?
Yup, get the instrument cable for it. The adapters don't work well with it. That's the one thing that is really annoying with this system, but it's an easy fix. I have like 4 of these cables... each in a different bag in case I forget one haha. But I have a link in the description where you can buy it here: amzn.to/322jZFh
Hello, I was wondering if you could help me out. My band wants to practice with headphones (they might want stereo mixes). So I am wondering what my options are; I was considering getting the Zoom L-12 since it has 5 outs for monitoring. We are also looking into streaming our live performances. I was considering the Behringer X AIR XR18, but it seems like there would be more stuff to buy with that set up. My apologizes for getting into so much depth, hope the lock down hasn't been too bad for you ♥
Basically however many musicians you have in your band is how many Aux or Send channels you’ll need on a mixer. This could be a digital or analog mixer. Digital is usually easier because you can use a phone app to control your mixes. As far as the xr18, you really don’t need anything else unless you wanted to start using it live. But just for practice especially, you would need that, and then just a few headphone amps since you do not NEED to be wireless for practice. Hope that helps!
@@ScottUhlMusic Thanks for getting back to me soon, Private message me and I'll have to send you some freshly roasted coffee for your help haha. I am trying to imagine the single routing and I am getting a bit confused haha. Everyone plugs into the xr18 > That goes to app(or computer) > Sends goes to separate headphone amps (I.e. XLR to 1/4 or 1/8 headphones). Then on the app/software I can record each Bus as well provide personal mixes ("More Me")?
Haha no worries man. Did you see my in ear monitor series? Watch the video “how to run your own in ears” and I think it will make sense. You won’t even need the splitter if it’s just for rehearsal. Everyone plugs into one of the Aux channels and then mixes from their cell phone or tablet. I think it will make sense after you watch the video
@@ScottUhlMusic OKAY I think I get it. With the XR16; everyone will be go out AUX with their Behringer p2 and either I or they can control their own mix with the App/Software. I am assuming I can run the XR16 into my DAW and stream that so no worries there.... But; does the XR16 NEED to be connected to our WiFi so I can even make monitoring mixes app or do we connect to the XR16's WiFi?
The x12/16/18 has a built in network/WiFi but its kind of weak. I recommend getting an external router if you can. But you all connect to that network and then the app works 👍
