Warlock and Cleric, but neither of the concepts are abandoned by the character. They're tempted by the power their Warlock patron gives them, but wants to stay true to their deity - maybe with a higher Charisma than Wisdom.

I've been juggling an idea for a Fighter(Battle Master)/Rogue(Inquisitive). I'm the farthest thing from a min/maxer, so I'm just trying to make a nasty sneak attack with the maneuver Tactical Assessment and the Inquisitive's Insightful Fighting. Love to see what you could do with it, if it tickles you to do so!

@@DaBezzzzAmusingly, I'm a 3.5 player normally, but last summer I was visiting my brother who runs 5e, and he had planned a game for my visit with myself, his wife and two daughters (both in grade school), and asked me to build a 5th level character. I wanted to A) check out the 5e warlock and B) check out 5e multiclassing. I ended up creating a Cleric 1/Warlock 4! Background story was basically he was a cleric of Mielikki, but really, he wasn't the most promising of her servants, definitely more charismatic than wise, and so when Titania, Queen of the Summer Court, with whom she was on good terms, came to Mielikki and said she wanted to borrow one of the goddess's clerics to serve her as well, the goddess was like, here, take this guy, he's definitely got some Eldritch potential, he can serve us both but do give him back when he's served his purpose, maybe he'll have gotten a bit wiser and prove useful in new ways...

I think it would have been interesting to only take 2 levels in Paladin and the rest in Fighter, because when your character went to take their vow from the group, they either got scared (think Aang when told he's the Avatar), or realized they didn't want to follow the code being displayed, and so they ran and became a Mercenary for the next 5 levels. This sets the character up for an arc about crafting their own oath, and only taking that Paladin level 3 once your character invokes this in themselves, finally becoming a holy Paladin in something the character believes in. There could be an interesting moment when you essentially gain your power in a moment of desperation in order to fulfill some aspect of the oath, and use your Channel Divinity for the first time to save someone.

Story-based multiclassing is awesome, but if you're worried about mechanically breaking your character, the Magic Initiate feats are a fun way to go about it. When my very devoted Cleric took the Druid Initiate feat just so she could use Druidcraft to make flowers for her Druid fiance, it made for a few very cute moments in an otherwise very splody-stabby campaign.

A cool critical role example of this is Percy from Vox Machina when he got a closer connection to Orthax and they leveled up to level 12 at the same time. He took warlock initiate and used hex which showed the rest of the group that something was happening to him.

lol I just left a comment about this. I was playing a swashbuckler rogue and had plans to go into bard. But story happened and I got cursed to be a werecrab. And me and my DM narratively worked that to it opening the door to fathomless warlock. And I am SO HAPPY I DID THAT!

I don't think a character with paladin levels would have lost their faith; just because their power as a paladin isn't growing (i.e. getting more paladin levels) it doesn't mean they don't have it anymore. To me, a paladin who lost their faith has NO paladin levels.
@wumbojet
@wumbojet 2 месяца назад
Not to mention that for me personally, forcibly tying paladins to faith is very boring as the holy warrior archetype fits the cleric way more. The paladin fits the "royal retainer" or sworn knight archetype from fantasy settings way more than the previous one. You could think of his paladin level not growing because his oath has remained the same or hasn't been tested.
@talscorner3696
@talscorner3696 2 месяца назад
After all, the word paladin comes from "palatinus" and is much closer to "palatial"!
@BigKlingy
@BigKlingy 2 месяца назад
@@wumbojet Yeah, I've always felt tying Paladins to religion/gods was too restrictive. In my view, Paladins should be devoted to some kind of oath, but it could just be a moral code, philosophy, person, or any number of other things. To me they're more "medieval superheroes" (/villains for evil variants) than holy warriors.

My favorite character I’ve ever played started as a barbarian. He had left his clan after being banished by his father, and he greatly resented his father for it. However, his mother was a Druid. Mechanically I had chosen the wild magic subclass because I thought it was fun and interesting, but as the campaign progressed, he began trying to tame that wild magic and I started taking levels in Druid. Eventually he made it to level 5 in Druid, and he had heroically sacrificed himself to make sure his friends (who he had initially been very skeptical of and distant from) could escape a bad situation, even though it meant the personal quest he had been on went uncompleted (getting revenge on his father for his sister’s death). It was incredibly cathartic, even though mixing a barbarian with a full spellcasting class is less than “optimal”

One of my favorite characters I have played is my sorlock. He was a born with wild magic, and when he was young he accidentally killed his family when one of his magic surged. So he spent his whole childhood studying books to learn how to control his magics. One day he met a fiend that he made a pact with him with the promise of gaining control of his magic.

I really like the idea with thsi character of dipping out of paladin at level 5, right as you get extra attack and second level spells, big power spike maybe that was a big moment for them in their order, when suddenly something goes wrong and they dont feel suited to working there anymore. It also makes the character still pretty solid for that level (you have extra attack) but the player is incentivised to try to refind their faith even for a single level so they can get the big fancy paladin aura.

I was thinking of a Paladin that went mercenary. They still hold to the oath (keeping Paladin), but they're no longer focusing that aspect of themselves. I'm imagining a retired police officer who now works private security or became a PI. It offers up some great opportunities for their mercenary work to conflict with their oath or former organization.
@johnnye87
@johnnye87 19 дней назад
Related to that last point, I quite like the potential dynamic of a paladin who's apparently turned away from the oaths demanded by his order... only the order are concerned to see that he HASN'T lost his powers the way previous fallen brothers have. Do some members start to question if their leaders are mistaken about what principles their god truly values? Do others want to hunt down the renegade, either to bring him back into the fold or to make an example of him?

I never plan to create multiclass at a starting point because I'm more "How I feel the character evolutions" type. Maybe in the future if the situation arises I would think about it.
@Whiskypapa
@Whiskypapa 2 месяца назад
Me neither, except my next character. For that one, the multiclass is a tool to make the core idea of the character work. But normally, I would have one class and a backstory that *might* involve themes that would naturally lead to eventually multiclassing (or not), but let the evolution of the campaign steer my decision.

I absolutely love being in your server. It's my go to for a place to talk D&D. I take my wild ideas and concepts and usually get someone or multiple people (even a mod sometimes) to just chat and give me feedback and brainstorm to try and make what I'm doing as best I can. (bit of ADHD brain but explaining the latest bit of community I feel in there) Like right now my current D&D character is my Hazbin Hotel OC turned into a Tabaxi/Tiefling hybrid. Me and my DM came up with the idea of using a deck of playing cards. I pull 1 hand a turn. I have a list of 10 outcomes (the 10 hands you can get in Poker) with High Card being I have to use my basic attack (throwing the cards or cutting with them with a punch with them between his fingers.) The 9 other hands are all spells ranging from Cantrip all the way up to Royal Flush which is a level 4. Then added to it, there are Red Suit hands and Black Suit hands. Red Suits are Offensive then Black Suits are more Utility/Defensive. That is 18 spells I can get in 1 deck of cards. Then I can also find other decks of cards that each have different themes to give me new sets of spells to use (with some overlap) Here is where the Discord came in. I needed help putting together these decks and people were so awesome in there that they were supportive of the idea and some helped me with putting the spell lists together. Sorting through all of the game's spells to get a list put together. I did end up making more decks of spells on my own but that first initial one was helped with by your discord and others were cool to read over the other decks of cards and give me their thoughts on it all. So I'm very happy with that. :D PS. Yeah the cards are a lot of fun to use. It's a D100 system. 10s spot is the hand I pull, odd and even is black hand or red hand in that order. I imagine when we get to more crazy fights it'll be even more fun.

The one time I've multiclassed so far was a character created at level 6, with 3 levels each in Totem Warrior Barbarian and Celestial Warlock. She's a Rashemi warrior and an initiate into the Masked Witches, currently on her coming-of-age journey. Her patron is a Ki-rin who doubles as her totem spirit (Eagle mechanics) after she climbed a mountain to petition it for help for her village, and she took Pact of the Talisman to protect her traveling companion. I've yet to actually _play_ this character in the game she was written for, but I'm planning on using non-concentration setup spells before dropping into Rage, along with some utility spells, and using the level 1 Celestial feature to help with tanking and team support. If there were to be one single phrase to express this character's theme: "I fight for my friends."

one of the few characters i've ever created for myself started out as an exercise of "how many starting languages can i get a level 2 character to know?", though he rapidly spiraled away from that initial concept after i started actually imagining what sort of person this level 1 sorceror (draconic bloodline) / level 1 cleric (knowledge domain) might even be. to date, he's still one of my most beloved OCs-- though i have never had an opportunity to play as him, and i may never.

Here's one I enjoyed playing. Air Ginasi Genie Warlock Abjuration Wizard with the Lorehold Background. Ever since he was a young boy, Gailin had an intense interest in archeology. His mother was a Jinn, a minor air elemental, given human form for 30 years. She granted him powers to get her human form back. He went to Lorehold, in part to see if it could be done, and in part to study archeology. Now, he embarks on a great adventure, to make his mother corporeal and discover the secrets of the past.

Not me personally, but a couple of players in my current campaign have. They are a ranger and a fighter and they have essentially adopted a pair of halfling twin NPCs (druid and barbarian). When the party reached their most recent levels I asked them if they had any ideas for the halflings under their tutelage and they had the idea of them multiclassing into their classes to signify the twins growing and learning by being mentored by them. So the boy twin is a Shepherd Druid/Swarmkeeper Ranger and the girl twin is an Ancestral Guardian Barbarian/Rune Knight Fighter.

What I've toyed with is how we used to do it "back in the day" (back when I first played back in the BECMI/1e days) and that is roll your stats, assign them down the list (first rolled is STR, then DEX, and so on), then determining the class based on the stats. It can be interesting but then I end up with a class I'm not excited about (there are a few I just don't care too much for).
@johnnye87

Could be interesting to roll up a roster of characters like that (a couple more than there are players), then let the players draft who wants to play who. The ones who go unpicked just stay in town as NPCs or go off on their own adventures. Maybe they can be convinced to tag along on a mission or two (although not for free), and they're potential backup characters if someone dies. Otherwise, having The Guys You Didn't Hire come back later in the game as rivals or enemies would be cool.

My favorite multiclass pairs so far are Fighter (Samurai)/Paladin (with a custom subclass, Oath of the Protector) and Warlock (Pact of the Blade)/Mystic (Order of the Immortal), Mystic being the abandoned class from the Unearthed Arcana. I have them created as NPCs for my setting, because they are frankly pretty OP, even though they are perfectly within the rules, at least in my version of the rules. There is a third character who travels with them, who is a Fighter (Champion)/Sorceror (Favored Soul), based upon a combination of various versions of the Favored Soul that have been presented in UA.

I built a character for a level 5 adventure at a con, and I made a Wood elf scout rogue/ranger, and I was a little surprised by how well it worked. I made them after Tasha's was out, so steady aim helped with the vibe for my survivalist. I eventually took sharpshooter and was basically a sniper doing like 20-30 damage per hit while just staying still

the homerule I would really suggest is that if multiclassing would give a player an instance of extra attack that they can't use it gives a fighting style instead. Allows martial multiclass without forcing one class to be a sub 5 level dip

Started a new campaign a couple months ago and I ended up doing this. We were going to start at level three and I was thinking of going with either a fighter or a cleric. Then the other players announced their characters were going to be a warlock and a wizard. I've never multi-classed before but we needed someone who could take a hit and also heal and I didn't want to play a paladin so Merris (fighter-2, cleric-1) was born. She was part of the city militia (hence the fighter) but after she got out she ended up serving in a temple to Selune.

I did a hexblade warlock who multiclassed into paladin. He was a Charlatan based off Gilderoy Lockhart, who made a pact with an archfey To become the most famous hero in the world. The Fey tricked him because he used the word “become” in the pact. He gave my character a sentient spear that was cursed to make the wielder perform acts of heroism. The spear would pull him towards danger, and would attack for him while he got ragdoll around and terror. Mechanically I had to roll a wisdom, saving throw at the beginning of combat, and if I failed, he went right at the biggest threat and could not retreat. if he passed, he would usually hang back and cast Eldridge blast. At one point in the campaign, he started to care about the people in the party, and wanted to become more powerful so they could defeat the BBEG. he returned to the Arch Fey and became The Summer Knight, multiclassing into an Oath of the Ancients paladin. After this, he in the spirit worked together and it unlocked some additional powers that the spear had. He was a super fun character to play and I replayed him as my first character in BG3.

The echo gets Attacks of Opportunity (which become spells thanks to warcaster). Undead Warlock is for fear status and further control. Outside of combat, the Divine Sorcerer gives me the guidance, minor illusion and prestidigitation cantrips are always useful and the level feature Magical Guidance to re-roll ability checks.

Hmm 🤔 I really like multiclassing ranger and rogue together. Feywanderer ranger and archfey warlock are also super strong too. And I’ve done a monk and scout rogue build before. Hmm 🤔 and I had great success with combining samurai fighter and tempest cleric. Also a swarm ranger and grave cleric build. I’ve also combined drakewarden into both a cleric for one and drakewarden and rogue for another. I don’t always multiclass, but sometimes I do, though that is mostly when I have the leeway of starting at higher levels and/or if it feels thematic to the story. I play a lot of storytelling and roleplay heavy campaigns so choosing to multiclass sometimes comes down to the context of the events in the game.

Honestly my Barbarian/Rogue isnt a logistical nightmare because of specific subclasses we adapted. Also because she is is very specific type of Barb that ties directly into her story. So she starts off mostly Rogue, then at this point in her personal story comes into play and she starts taking more Barb levels ends up being more Barb than Rogue at the end of the day. Still that Sneak attack will count.

I would like to see making a build based on a narrative you want for your character, like taking custom lineage for the magic initiate wizard feat because your dual ancestry Pact of the Tome Genie Warlock had prior training in some wizard spells before discovering his patron in a forbitdden tome, or taking variant human for the martial adept feat because your street urchin swashbuckler rogue had to get into some fights to protect his younger sibling, become a sort of street warrior.

I actually think picking up Fighter Levels as a Paladin can be a sort of in-world diagetic in-character minmaxing. Paladin gets beat in a fight and decited that he needs to git gud, son! So in game he trains to master the action surge. Like, he's a knight of faith and virtue, and some Merc or barbarian just rocks his shit. Executive decides is martial provises inadequate, and starts training to focus specifically on that aspective is training

He accidentally and in desperation makes a pact with the Queen of Ravens for power to defeat one of her enemies (that he's already fighting.) His Archfey Goddess forsakes him, and, already having fulfilled his side of the past and getting to keep the power already granted, he disavows the QoR. Rather than there needing to be something wrong in the paladin order you could have instead done something like: paladin's focus on protecting the common folk from supernatural threats (undead, fiends, in some cases fey) but the emphasis is protecting the common folk. A tyrant or other BBEG attacks using normal mortal troops. After repeatedly fighting to protect the farmers or townspeople they could realize that they need more of a focus on just straight combat rather than the supernatural focus from paladin training thus moving over toward fighter.

druid paladin rogue bugbear doesn't even seem too bad. you get to be in wildshape while launching smites and rogue core features. there are plenty of saveless spells in your lists, smites only need melee hits, and wildshape overrides your physical stats, so your ability scores don't really matter as much either!

My sibling played a character that was specifically a multi class of two classes without a build in mind. The just wanted to play a young attractive male tiefling wizard monk, just so they would play a twink t-wi-nk.

D&D 2e Character: Dam Rewop, Human Dual class (not multiclass!..) Druid into Wizard. CN, Loved the forests, but needed more direct power to defend them from outisders. Would be fun to recreate using 5e wildfire druid

I have a character concept that requires multiclassing that I've been wanting to play for ages. Basically, a bladesinging wizard who's fully pretending to just be a fighter. Leaning towards this being a noble heir who is expected to be able to duel and has spent their childhood being taught by a weapons master. But for reasons (probably a racial trait), they also have magic. Maybe they leave home after a spar with their brother leads to them instinctively hitting him with a fire spell (elves do get a free cantrip, so fire bolt isn't hard to pick up). Maybe some other reason. They want to learn magic so they have better control, but they also don't want anyone to know they're using magic due to the shame of hurting their brother (or just of not living up to their parents' expectations). And then you get the mechanical hell of trying to pick spells that you can play off as other things (like flavoring Shield as having a main gauche to parry with, while spells like Magic Missile are probably completely off the table), and the narrative interest of trying to keep your literal character class secret from the other characters. And you also get an inbuilt character arc of either actually becoming a fighter and sort of denying your magic and becoming who you're expected to be or becoming more of a wizard and no longer needing to hide the magic but having much less impressive swordsmanship. Or you could end up with a more even split, where the character is not choosing between their two halves but trying to unite them.

I just checked my pcs. I have 18. Only 2 which have multiclass, one is an assassin wizard, the other is a goblin swashbuckler fighter. The second one was Adventure league build so I could use a gun without taking the gunner feat. This was before goblins and gunner feat became AL legal. If you are planning on dual classing for the get go. Think about it as you are creating the first level. Grr. Moan. Whine. I just notice 4 of my pcs were DM rewards specials, now only one is.

My very first 5th Edition character was created for a campaign I was joining late, joining in at 6th level. My idea was 3 levels of Great Old One Warlock, then 3 levels of Life Cleric. This was someone raised in a cult who broke out, then a kindly deity opposed to that GOO intervened. I learned 3 things from that experience. First, it's a hard way to learn complex D&D mechanics. Second, D&D is unforgiving if you don't prioritize your class' main abilities, and adding another class that prioritizes a totally different ability makes it worse. Third, if you're invited in far too late for a Session Zero, maybe listen in for a session or two and get an idea of what the DM and other players expect in terms of roleplaying; all of that backstory and class-juggling was pretty useless for me in the end.

Just incorporate that your paladin wanted to become a better fighter or strategist (if you are aiming for battle master).

Nothing really to do with the video. But I’ve never used discord before, so correct me if I’m wrong, but do mods sound a lot like TAs to anyone? 😅

Hey Mike, I really like your videos. I have an idea for a topic that might make an interesting video and I'm considering supporting you on patreon to commission a video on the topic (Project Image Tier). In your last video you specifically mentioned that you're fine with it if someone pays for just a single month to use the reward of the Programmed Illusion Tier to commission a CR-Demystified video. I take it that means that the same applies to the Project Image Tier? I wouldn't want to do something that's considered an abuse of the system. Also: Should I send you the topic I would like to commission a video on before I pledge on patreon? I'm not really sure how expansive a topic for such a video should be and I would neither want to commission something that's too much for one video nor something you don't have anything interesting to say about. So I could DM you the pitch to confirm that this would be an acceptable commission before I pledge on patreon. Or should I just go ahead on patreon and you deal with the commission and try to make the best video for the pitch even if you don't like the pitch? Which way would you prefer?

Yes, you’d be fine to commission it and then drop your fee down to something you’re more comfortable with for future videos! And yes, feel free to DM me (Patreon or Discord are fine) to see if I would be able to work with the video concept. Thank you so much for asking!

I wouldn't say that you need to lose your faith to start as a paladin and dip into fighter. Scenario: You're a paladin who was sent to the front lines of a holy war. You train alongside some incredibly powerful fighters and admire their action surge. You ask to be trained by the most skilled, and they put you through your paces, so in the end, you have 5 levels of Pally and 2 levels of Fighter.

The thumbnail “the perfect multiclass” is a bit misleading when you’re just taking a story approach and leaving things up to change

I agree. Why play a games with stats and mechanics if you don't care about them? Wouldn't you be better off in an improv club? I like rp too but I want to be good at my "job". Why even fill in a character sheet? It's just stats and mechanics. I'm not saying it's wrong but why spend money on all those books behind you if you are going to ignore 60% of the content?

if you're looking for a fun build to build a character for a video, I will suggest this one: Dwarf Path of the Beast Barbarian/Way of the Kensei Monk. Pick up Barbarian claws for Kensei Weapon. Take two feats: Dwarven Fortitude and Durable. I call this build "Wolverine".
