I enjoyed this video and your example of "wax on, wax off" was great. I misinterpreted the title, thinking it was a medical overview of the nervous system rather than what it states being the clinical examination. Sometime I would appreciate a deeper understanding of the nervous system. It amazes me that my muscles are still intact but they are controlled by the nerves. We patients have little understanding of nerves until we are diagnosed with a nerve condition. The general public knows little of them. Again thank you for the video's, I am dismayed about the lower viewer count for this but sometimes we with MS deal with symptoms and not education.

Absolutely fantastic. Thank you as always. I know a lot of us MSers don't either care or want to know, I'm on the other side of that coin though. As an engineer (retired) the 'hows' are the usual question format. Now, it's the 'whys' and this video was brilliant in helping with that. Basic understanding! Superb. I vote more! 😄

Great idea. Ideally, this neuro-exam video series (once complete) should be playing non-stop in every neuro-MD waiting room. When anybody arrives for their very first neuro-exam, there is distress, uncertainty and lots more unhappy feelings; but then the exam itself typically just worsens the patient's fear - doctor is performing and asking for diverse strange things with zero explanation. So, YES, please do create and publish the whole series. Even if the likelihood, that a brand new patient luckily stumbles across it before their first neuro-exam is rather low, at least they can look it up after the exam and destress a bit.

Dr. B. .... this was awesome. I am sad that not all neurologists are as precise and looking for the things you do. You have an inner drive unlike others to be the best of the best in your field. I like this type of video. It explains so much. Do you tell your patients after these tests what your “eagle eye” assessment revealed?

With MS and TM, my MS specialist/neurologist only gives me a whopping 30-45-second assessment and has me walk the hall for about 30 seconds. That's it. Tells me I'm good, and I'm out the door. I spend the same amount of time with the phlebotomist that I do the neurologist. 🙄 Dr. B, I sure wish you were my MS neurologist.

I have a up coming appointment in Feb. 2023. I am worried about what test they will do this time. I went through the test of removing fluid from my spine around the year 2000. I don't want to do that again. I went blind in 1979-1980 many times total black out. My vision was my first signs, stumbling, speech sounding drunk. One of my arms ached. I am at this point having more systems again. I would love to see more videos on Exams.

I personally am quite interested in this, I believe the neurological system is far more complex than any human can understand. I guess that stands for reason or we would be a lot closer to add cure? I really love the analogies, I think that is the best sweeper simple people such as myself to learn

This is good information to have going into a neurologist.... call it quality control. You see what a thorough exam looks like. So when the Neurologist runs in and quickly breezes through an exam without really paying attention to what the patient is presenting, the patient can advocate for themselves a little better. My daughter’s neurologist didn’t do half of these tests, told her she’s “normal” and then brushed off all the opinions from occupational therapists, vision therapists, and her pediatrician. Now we get to repeat this whole process when we are seen for a second opinion. Knowledge is power. Wish I had this video a week ago. Love your videos. Keep up the good work👍🏻

Amber, something I learned when I moved to a new state. I faced searching for a new Neurologist in a directory that left me with no options. Only doctor available was recommended by one of the offices I called (all the doctor's on the list we're either not accepting my insurance anymore or they didn't deal with MS patients). I was happy to find a Neuro practice that did, so I jumped at making an appointment. I met with the nurse practitioner, and got some time to meet the Neuro as well. What an eye opener. I had never consulted for a second opinion back home. Didn't realize it was necessary. Plus not many Neuros specialize in MS in my old state. In addition to this visit I had made an appointment with a well known MS practice downtown which did not accept my insurance, but I really wanted to get that doctor's opinion so paying the consultation fee was worth it. What a surprise to get a third opinion at that point. I learned something valuable, a second or third opinion, no matter how long it takes to get in front of the doctor (which happens because it's a 1st visit), is worth the long wait or the out-of-state pocket expense. The opinions of these doctor's didn't clash per se with my original neuro, but the second doctor (a general neuro) reminded me of what to expect when starting treatment with a new medication; he wouldn't have pulled me off Tysabri so quickly. No med will guarantee no more relapses or halt progression. The third doctor was an MS Specialist and gave me a comprehensive examination, filled out my questionnaire with me, asked all kinds of questions and provided recommendations along the way for further treatment with other specialists, medication direction, and diet. I walked away with a printout of her recommendations and shared it with the Nurse Practioner at the second neuro's office. I told my husband, it's worth paying the consultation fee because that third doctor really showed me what a non-rushed visit should include. Even if the consultation is out-of-state, consider setting the appointment and go. If you want to stay in touch with that doctor, ask them if they have a patient portal available to send questions, and what's the fee for visits with a nurse practitioner online if available? Sorry for such a long reply. Best wishes for brighter days for your daughter. Cindy

Thank you, Cindy. We’re working on getting a referral to a practice 4 hours away from where we live. This practice is in a significantly larger city and so, we hope, has a better selection of Dr.’s. We’re not sure if she has MS specifically but there is definitely something neurological in nature going on.

Good video...for me, seeing your neuro exam does two main things 1) explains the why/what which not all people are good at and helpful to hear it from another angle/communication style and 2) gives all of your viewers a point of view and comparison from your style/testing vs. the exams that individuals are experiencing from their neurologists. I'm an information junky and too much information is never enough for me! Keep the videos coming and thank you for you efforts and contributions!

Hi Aaron, this kind of videos is very interesting for me. I've always wondered why certain examinations were made in certain ways. Especially the walking and standing exams. From what I have learned every doctor can read from this. Very interesting. And now even more interesting, cause now I know what my neurologist can read out of these examination processes! When I am in her office next time I am going to ask her to talk while she is testing me. So I can learn more about what SHE is seeing through these tests! Thanks for sharing all these informations! Have a good day ! I am loving to learn from you!, best regards and until next time, Britta

What an awesome new series you're doing for us. Yes, yes, yes. We can always be learning. I just had my bi-annual exam yesterday, where he did a reflex test down by the ankle bone. It was a new area for me. I asked him the purpose and got an answer. The point is we shouldn't be afraid to ask questions about the exam, during the exam. I believe it will show us what type of physician we have and care should be an open dialogue between patient and physician. It's a long term commitment with a chronic disease, so don't be afraid to ask questions. Stepping off my soap box now. :)

I started my second degree in healthcare which I haven’t been able to finish due to sheer exhaustion and keeping up with my toddler. Once the dust settles with the pandemic I’m going back and it’s doctors like you that make me want to see it through. Thank you for your videos and the knowledge you share. Best wishes and Happy New Year

I cant tell you how excited I was when I saw this pop up on my Twitter/RU-vid channel today. I have had so many questions regarding what my neurologist is looking for in these tests since my diagnosis 1 1/2 years ago. My questions...along with my shyness (Its really difficult for me to have people watch/analyze me) have actually caused my anxiety to increase with each neuro appointment. I eagerly anticipate more videos on this topic and hope it helps me get my anxiety/nervousness for my appointments under control!!

Dr. B! This is good stuff.. you’re actually decoding all the stuff my neurologist mumbles under his breath as he’s going through these exercises 🙄 Keep it coming I may be able to respond to all the mumbling one day. Thank You, looking forward to the next video in this series.

Very helpful video, thanks. Like some other comments below I never really thought to ask the what and why at my various exams. I am only really getting more pro-active about my MS in the past few months so this video has come at a good time. As well as stumbling across you on Twitter and you tube. Previously have been a bit meh about it all, until I realised I couldn’t really cope with life and MS struggles so had to learn some copeing strategies.

Wax on, wax off.....paint the fence......sand the floor.......oh wow, what an 80's flash back! I love it. Thank you for this video. Very helpful to learn exactly what is being looked at during a neuro exam.

I love this! Thank you for sharing, doctor. The human brain is so interesting to me, and it's cool to know why my MS brain functions (or doesn't function) the way it does.

Brings back such happy memories this video.... the untold level of anxiety in waiting for the Neuro to announce his conclusion from the tests he performed in the previous 20 minutes more like a baseball bat across the face during one of life’s most vulnerable moments..... Saying that, diagnosis came as a great relief because I could think of worse I appreciate the breakdown you’ve done, thank you. Demystifies, educates and fascinates....some beast of an illness.
