My wife passed last June after suffering from MS for 26 years. She was almost 82 years. We were married 51 years. She wasn't able to ambulate for the last 15 years. I cared for her at home for 23 years. She was in a nursing home nearby for the last 3 years. In the end she passed from aspiration pneumonia. She had a great attitude for all that time. It was a happy release in the end. The effect of caring for her for all that time had a significant impact on my own health. Since stopping as her carer, I have had pneumonia and a heart attack. I usually walk about 11,000 steps a day. It has been a very long journey.

Yes I can! Yes I can! Yes I can! I have relearned how to walk 3 times in the last 9 years of living with MS. I have 3 flights of stairs, no elevator in my building. I could barely walk 3 steps before I had to sit down.....thats what they (healthcare providers) had to work with! I was told to get in a wheelchair and get it over with!!! I also have a back injury and osteoarthritis. I walk now, learned it by myself, never got to get help from a physic therapist either :-( It might of taken me way longer, but I'm proud of myself. I have done some Aquafit in the summer...but it took them 3 months of reminders to finally get a chair to sit in!! (no one understands MS) Today it was the first exercise video from CanDo MS, Mandy Moves Program....come and join us! :) If you live with MS, don't give up. I know how hard it is :-{ Keep Moving a little each day, Motion is Lotion for our bodies, but on the inside. And don't let Anyone tell you You Can't do something, Rewrite it in your mind....Yes I can! Yes I can! Yes I can!

Dear Aaron, I do exercise every day, usually in the mornings. I am walking slowly but steady on my treadmill! Watching TV while walking. This helps me walking straight up, cause the TV is hanging on the wall. And it is helping with my posture as well. I might say I am a good walker again, but outside the house I need the wheelchair to not overdo it. I can't walk and look at the same time cause walking outside means different streets, cobblestone etc. so I am in my wheelchair. But inside the house I am using a walker or cane, grabbing my furniture as aids to keep the balance. We all know each other very well! Thanks for this new wonderful video,Aaron! Thanks for your passion and support for us MSers all over the world! sending my best regards to you and your family. Give River a hug for me, please! sincerely Britta

I have very limited energy reserves even with exercise but that’s not gonna stop me. I’m very heat sensitive too. So I garden by hand-zero machinery. I turn compost, dress soil etc. If I only have so much juice, I’m gonna use that juice to make healthy food for myself and my family. It’s painful sometimes because I’m fighting bone-on-bone osteoarthritis in several joints. I’m 65 and my garden is my sanity. I’ve learned that I have to constantly monitor my body for fatigue and heat but I MUST work in my garden for physical and mental exercise. Digging post holes or driving t posts are decidedly aerobic activities and they’re both dynamite upper body work. The garden might sound tame but I can do something out there in the fresh air and sunshine almost every day.

I've been experiencing exercise burnout / depression lately. I was dealing with it in the beginning. Exercising has been an easy habit to keep. After the first decade, it seems to be an enviable end. No matter what I do MS is going to do what it's going to do. Still I know exercising is my only hope of going for as long as I can with the disease. Thank you so much for this video. I want to hopefully get back on track and get in the habit of going back to the gym. Thanks again for being there.

I suffered to a burst left brain AVM in 1985, left with aphasia and epilepsy. I became a long distant walker for 33 years, kept healthy if always weak. Retiring was a mistake and I became extremely fatigued with chest tighnest for a few years now, and not tested but I am sure I have MS. I cant walk too far as exhausted in 20 minutes, so I intend to make short exercises from home from sitting, with a schedule to do this regardless how I feel to retraine my brain. I believe I created this MS myself from fears and anxiety and only I can improve my health rather drugs or someone elses help.

Thank you for this, it's very powerful. My treadmill at home has been really important for me. Though not as important as my husband, who has talked me out of setting the speed too high and for too long, he knows me too well. Exercising at 2mph for 15mins most days has improved my energy, mood and lung function. Most important is to stop when it feels right, even when that's after 10mins...going with what's right for that moment, hour, day is so important. Being kind to my body and myself is a crucial thing, however much I want to 'push' it..which never works. Being able to hold on to the treadmill handles helps my balance a lot too! My outdoor balance is improving too.Thank you for your wise words and guidance, take care, be well xxx

Love the water! I teach Aqua Pilates once a week, and I workout in the water once a week one my own. They make aquajogger belts that allow you to ‘stand’ in the deep end, and you can walk or jog. It’s nice because you are not hitting the pool floor, and it’s more cardiovascular. There also sell very small aqua hand weights that allow you do some strength exercises in the water without too much stress on the muscles or joints. The bigger ones can be too much for me. There is so much that can be done if you can find a good instructor. Our facility is geared towards improving the lives of those with chronic illnesses, or injuries, so it’s a lot more gentle. All three instructors have chronic illnesses.

Thanks for making this video, Dr. Aaron Boster! The point you made about overtraining is spot on. It’s important to allow the muscle to rest and recover after you have applied the stimulus of exercise. Exercising every day does not bring results quicker. Thank you so much for taking the time to speak about this important topic. Hope you are doing well and staying safe.

RRMS for 15 yrs. Rt side issues. I recently started using a rollator recently as recommend by my PT after my cane was not enough. Every day, even if i feel like garbage, i do at least 1/2 hr of stretches. I have a routine. I used to be a gymnast, so i use all those old stretches. I also practice beginner yoga even though i have been doing it for 30 yrs. Since my balance and walking ability became worse. If feel ok, i do various leg strengthening exercises and walking. I just do whatever i feel like doing that day or what i am capable of.

My workout is sadly my life. Other than countertop push-ups and some stretching my dance card is full. Getting out of bed is a workout. Getting dressed is a workout. Getting myself to the car so I can drive is a workout. I felt great the other day so I took an Epsom salt bath by myself. No one was home. I had a heck of a time standing up. Once I was up in the struggle I dropped the soap. Once the soap was on the tub floor and touched my foot my legs gave out like Bambi. I had to spend quite some time regrouping and trying to get up again. This was about a 2-hour workout total. Me=1 bathtub=0. Yes working out is paramount.

As someone who has had MS for 18 years and lifts weights and does cardio 5 days a week I couldn’t agree with this video more! I’m constantly being told by my Neuro my MRI says I should have a hard time walking, or even be in a chair. She tells me I am not my MRI. I still have issues and flair ups but truly believe exercise has changed the course of my MS. (I have also been a gym rat prior to MS, I know I’m not the the norm and feel extremely lucky) but I fully believe fitness has helped me.

Hi Dr Boster, thank you very much for another informative and encouraging video. We really appreciate the time you take to make these and it is clear you care deeply for everyone with MS. I hope you don't mind me asking you a question to do with the principle of "tiring out." My husband has progressive MS (or relapsing, depending on what neurologist you talk to). His main symptom is footdrop, which has certainly got worse over time. At present, he can walk for 10-15 minutes before it gets arduous. Occasionally, he will choose to really "push" himself and take, say, a half hour/45-minute walk, which means he ends up with quite a limp. I was wondering if it is a good or a bad idea to push these limits, or if it matters at all, neurologically and physiologically. One thing that interests me in particular is what is happening in the brain during the rest and recovery phase that follows exertion. In terms of maintaining realistic habits, we do 15 minutes of yoga together every day and once a week he sees a physiotherapist. Many, many thanks in advance.

We have to be extra careful with swimming since in the water movement is easier and we won't realize how much we have exercised. The first time I went swimming, after a few laps, when came out of the water, my legs felt so heavy I couldn't even move them, I was stuck to the ground. needed some rest before walking again.
