I don't know how anyone can learn this stuff without being shown. None of this is particularly intuitive. You've done a good job sharing the hows and whys. Thanks for the post.

Probably the BEST tutorial on Kontakt multi timbral setup in Logic Pro X that I have seen. I use the aux method. The only pain with this method is that you have to locate the main track to access the kontakt instrument. I wish there was a short cut key for this. But love this tutorial. Thank you!!

Thank you! And agreed, it would be much easier to be able to access the instrument that says Kontakt 3-4, 5-6, etc rather than solely from the main track

Interesting. I was just looking into Kontakt multitimbral instruments. I just use different tracks for each sound.

This works great with one issue. How do you record into the Live Loops for each of the aux tracks? I can do it in arranger mode but not in Live Loops.

brilliant and easy-to-understand explanations. so your 'long' and' short' Aux tracks for external MIDI are mono or stereo ?
@RobertRodriguezMusic
@RobertRodriguezMusic 2 года назад
Thank you! I personally have my long and shorts as stereo but that’s something you can pick when choosing the type of player you use. For example, kontakt offers 16/25 stereo outputs as well as mono outputs!
@sophieramel1439

@@RobertRodriguezMusic OK I got confused with multi output. For the external MIDI method it is quite possible to have several stereo outputs.

Following this exactly and as much as I get audio linked to each channel in logic, switching channels in logic will not switch the instruments! In order to get a new instrument to play, I have to manually select it in Kontakt! HELP!

You've convinced me about this. A very clear explanation, thank you. Suppose I have a template, consisting of mainly Kontakt mulits. Is there any way of changing/converting these to your recommended Kontakt auxiliary instances, or would I have to start all over? I'm currently in a transitional state of going over to constructing submixes and bussing, which is a great cpu saver, too.Thank you.

@bobbydolan 0 seconds ago Robert, I love the detail of your vids. I have a question for you. You are high on Musio right now. I'm trying to build a logic template for Musio like Mike Patti from Cinesamples did with Digital Performer. Have you tried to make a Logic template for Musio? I'm running into some strange problems with it. Would you please let me know if you have a Logic template for Musio?

Could you just load all of the plug-ins ... and then disable them... you can press opt + click on the power button?
@RobertRodriguezMusic
@RobertRodriguezMusic 3 года назад
Sure you can! Only thing is that you wanna be mindful of how much stress you’re putting on your system even if you disable/enable plugins. The larger the template, the more of a problem it can become!

Would you say this is more beneficial than using a host application like VE Pro?

Great video, Kontakt can be pretty intimidating… I do have a question though. When using a multi-output kontakt (without the multi-timbral option like you advise), and just using the aux tracks method, there is a big downside to this, which is that I cannot write automations in my MIDI regions on aux tracks except the first one. This is a big issue, since I like to use the modulation automation a lot on my long strings or brass, and it’s much easier to write them in the relevant MIDI region. I would need to write all my automations on the first track, which is hard to keep track of. With multi-timbral, this isn’t an issue anymore, but in order to be able to control volume and pan independently, I need to create aux tracks as well on the mixer. So for instance, if I have one instance of kontakt with 3 instruments (let’s say violins, violas and celli), I now have 3 instrument tracks in my main tracks window where I'll write my melodies and automations, and 3 other aux tracks in my mixer correspondind to those, that will let me adjust those parameters without affecting the others. Is this a viable option in your opinion ? As for RAM efficiency, though I agree that multi output is generally the best options considering it needs fewer instances of kontakt, it brings another issue. If I have 1 kontakt with all my strings articulations in it, but just need to use spiccati for a specific project, I have no choice but to activate this instance, and load all articulations into the RAM, even if I’ll only use one out of five. Is there a way to optimize that ?

Well, just found the answer to my first question :) Just needed to select the right MIDI channel on my automation window, and then go to « MIDI automation » instead of « Host » in my kontakt, and slide CC1 to all modulation wheels in my instruments. In a noob, but I’m learning !

I really cannot understand why Logic developers provided that kind of insanely useless multitimbral option. I mean..WHY?? Why on earth anyone could be helped by tracks which cannot have discreet controls and show the same output volume level? Really I can't see the reason behind. I usually work with big Kontakt templates and the only option we all have is the multi output setting, though causing us to assign the right output for each Kontakt instrument which is loaded in one instance. Just insane. I know Cubase has a more consistent multi timbral environment for instance. I'm a Logic user but all that is definitely annoying, Btw great video mate!

Thank you! I appreciate that! Yeah, I’ve been using Logic for years and for the most part I love it. But the fact that there needs to be workarounds for something as simple as a decent multitimbral instrument is kinda crazy
@AlexanderAndresen
@AlexanderAndresen 2 года назад
But Logic does do this though. You set up multitimbral outputs with their each own aux. This guy just doesn’t show you that. You basically do what he did for midi tracks, but instead use aux tracks and boom, you have separate controls and automation on every multi. Also, no one puts a reverb on every track. If this video is all about economizing and maximizing CPU and RAM resources, then I would set up my busses first.
@GiulioPirondiniMusic
@GiulioPirondiniMusic 2 года назад
@@AlexanderAndresen yes I perfectly know what you're saying: in fact I always use a multi output template. Yet in Cubase if you choose a Multi timbral option you basically achieve the same result like a Logic multi output, but without the bothering operation of creating output channels; I mean you go for a multi timbral setting and every track has discreet controls, not so in Logic.

When I create Aux tracks for instruments in kontakt all instruments play at the same time. I have to solo instruments in kontakt to make them play one at a time in logic. Not sure what I'm doing wrong here.
@RobertRodriguezMusic
@RobertRodriguezMusic 10 месяцев назад
Hmm it’s possible they are all sharing the same MIDI channel OR they’re all routed to the same output 1-2. Make sure you go to batch functions in Kontakt and remove the current settings and replace with individual outputs. This way each aux track can get its out own output!
@lucasrose3010
@lucasrose3010 10 месяцев назад
@@RobertRodriguezMusic I did that so it should be working. They are all routed to the correct channels but they won't play one at a time with out soloing them

This is very useful but i have a question: how do you bounce in place with external midi? This option is not available for it, only for software instrument and audio tracks. So, if i have channel 2 with spiccato and ch 4 with pizzicato for example, how do i bounce that regions in place?
@RobertRodriguezMusic
@RobertRodriguezMusic Год назад
Hey! Unfortunately, that’s definitely one of the cons of an external midi track. Since they’re all routed to one instrument track, as of right now we wouldn’t be able to bounce each one in place. That could be a pro of an aux track! I like to route all my instrument tracks to audio tracks so that I can create audio files. Doesn’t directly address the issue but it’s been helpful in my own template
@carlomariagenovesi5124

@@RobertRodriguezMusic Yes, and for connect instrument tracks to audio tracks you use a bus in input of the audio track, right? Anyway thank you for the answer 🙏

Keep in mind that this way you’re making AUX tracks, and Logic has a 1000 limit of AUX tracks
