MultiWii Quick Tips - Stopping flicking/pulsing motors using LPF

In this short video I cover one of the topics that I've used with subscribers to help them remove unwanted pulsing or flicking of the model in flight using LPF (Low Pass Filters) in the Multiwii code.
This behaviour is normally caused by vibration affecting the MPU6050 gyro array and causing the model to correct for a movement that isn't there. Normally balancing the props and motor and mounting on an anti-vibration mount takes care of this.
In a few cases though, this step is needed to remove the last remnants of the behaviour. I've had a few boards that needed this to work perfectly.
Over the past few months a number of subscribers have needed this to get their models flying great so I've made this video to share the tip more widely.
Thanks for watching, please LIKE and subscribe and Happy Flying!

Its unfortunate on my model the twitching is so bad it will not take off and even hover. :( I think the motors need to be balanced (I got 2 balanced very well) but the mounting mechanism is fairly heavy and not machined with an adequate level of precision. The way is seems to mount is that the a sleeve with threads fits over the shaft and a ring get put on that, and the prop does next, then the last bit screws on, and it stick out a good inch away from the bell of the motor. By that distance, even the smallest imperfection in the weight and balance of the mount will cause it to bend outward as the motor revs up, leading to lots of vibs. I will be if I can replace the bit that screws on with a simple nut instead that has physically less weight and a smaller profile. Looking for different motors, it seems like threads are on the motor shafts themselves and the prop is pressed against the bell of the motor itself, which is a FAR better mounting system and avoids having a bunch of rotating weight far out from the bearings and bell. I'll see what I can do about it after I get a proper prop balancer and make sure mt props are balanced correctly.

Hi PowerMax, I think that until you have balanced all the kit (all motors and props) you won't know if its that. Sorry to hear that you still have issues. I hope you get flying soon.. Happy flying (soon I hope) !

Painless360 Thanks! I actually got the quad up into the air today, not sure if it was balancing the props, the motors, or lowering this PF value to 98Hz, but no matter, it flies! This big thing is so graceful, even as it falls and crashes (when the battery slipped out or a bullet connector came loose) My little hubsan X4 is like a squirrel, it is so jumpy and reactive! This larger quad does not do that as at all, I will do more flying and testing tomorrow morning and see how high I can get the LPF before I have the same old problems! Thanks!

Painless360 Also, is there more specific code the the SE v2.5 of the board, do you have a link?

Not as such, using the code for the HK board works great.

+Power Max I heard turning the LPF off will make the FC and the ESC crosstalk to each other faster. What will happen if it's set too low or off?
