Mumbai/Bombay would have been a legendary city if development took on a right path as it has a glorious history, but yet still lagging behind in many terms even being financial capital of India. Just look at Dubai during 1980s and today.
james combatengr YES OFCOURSE, BECAUSE BRITISH HAD STRICT RULES, UNLIKE PEOPLE WHO TAKE CARE OF THE LEGISLATION OF THE CITY NOW, WHO ALLOW PEOPLE TO SHIT IN OPEN.
@@riddhimishmusic sure if you look past all the racism, diseases, sexism, slow transport, inefficiency, untraceable crime ,casteism, wars and illiteracy Now things aren’t much better now but in comparison life is better for people Its just the people who have taken it for granted

+Rose Queen have you ever been to south Bombay (the main part of the city that used to be the whole city back in the british days)? It is cleaner today than in this video. Marine drive looks like a dump in old pictures. It looks more like suburban seaside promenades. There are bullock carts roaming around on the roads and grazing grounds. South Bombay is far better maintained today.
Arun keeping one's city and surroundings clean, is a primary responsibility of every citizen irrespective of the city he /she is in, this value should be embedded within every child in a young stage, this habit and thought when inculcated in a young age, gets passed on from generation to generation, in other words... No matter the population rise, no matter the waste generated in your city, when the people of the city, do not know the value of keeping the city clean... No matter, how much money or technology you pump into the city, isn't going to help, this is the primary reason why any city/country which you see out there is clean ! As Indians, we lack the values, nothing to do with technology or without any extra effort as you have stated...
makes you feel so sad for all that Bombay has lost over the years esp due to lack of planning and thoughtless Government. The suburbs of Bombay are filthy , congested, narrow roads , open gutters, natural water sources that have become open gutters / filthy drains, slums... and suburbs have developed only post independence !!!!
This video made me sad. How did we end up where we are today, poor, under-developed? India was one of the richest city in the world as shown and described in the video.
What a magnificent video! This is pure historic gold! Thank you so much for uploading this, Sir! It should be watched by every Indian as a peek into the window of our colonial past.
As ***** pointed out this is an AMERICAN film. Gotta acknowledge the role played by americans in highlighting India's freedom struggle thru film (Rembember the Dandi March coverage) That was the only way to get worldwide condemnation, and put pressure on the British. Perhaps it was thru many of the public rallies that Viveknanda, Tagore and Ambedkar conducted in the US, that led to these films being produced.
it was clean but it got spoiled when people from the other states kept coming in day in day out that lead to increasing population, more demand for food, clothing and shelter which in turn lead to the development of slums everywhere even surrounding the airport of Mumbai...so conclusion Mumbai can be clean again if only these encroacher's stop polluting and populating this land. peace!
FAREWELL BOMBAY THE TRUE HEART OF INDIA............................... AND WELCOME MUM.........BAI'S THE GATEWAY TO ALL THE BHAI'S , MUNNA BHAI'S , DON BHAI'S OF INDIA AND OF THE ENTIRE WORLD
I so very much enjoy these truly early films, news reels, etc. That is as much for the unintended as intended content. The unintended reveals both the enlightened and unenlightened ideas and perceptions prevalent in the film maker's minds. Thank you very much for sharing this with us.
Many overwhelming feelings.. Watching the video from 1920 .. watching OUR PEOPLE .. in Sadra and Dhoti .. in bullock carts .. these were the SAME people .. who within 20 years.. kicked out the mighty british empire and won ourselves the freedom .. THESE ARE THE REAL HEROES. Also, it is so irritating the way he pronounces bom .. bay .. ... in all a great piece of video.. tx for upload.
😍😍 Far better than today's fake world ! From clothes, phone to shoes everything for showoff today but just look at the people of that time wow.. mental peace.
Ce sont des images de gens fortunés . Les mises en scènes sont évidentes . Il faut rajouter le roman nationale . Tu es juste entrain de te faire avoir 100 ans plus tard 😂

For time and time again, the new cuts into the old, and somehow the old goes on in some way of strange defiance. ONLY IN INDIA. India never surrendered itself to the glamour of the outside world. It is a mystery yet to be understood. It always looks like it is going to surrernder to the illusion of wealth and power and then suddenly you see it is not. this is what the narrator means by Strange defiance, The Chinese completely surrendered their history to the modern world, so did South America, there is no trace of Ancient Egyptian culture to be seen today. It is only in India where the ancient is still practiced today in the background of Modern living. It is unbelivable. So typical India, where people sill ask the question :Who am i?Where did I come from?:
Divya Bhatt Thanks. Throughout History, Empires have been created by the Sword. India alone created an Empire of the Spirit. ( BBC documentary called Indian: Empire of the Spirit). Parmahansa Yogananda said this in the U.S before he left his Body. "Where Ganges, woods, Himalayan caves, and men dream God-I am hallowed; my body touched that soil". "As he uttered these words, he lifted his eyes to the Kutasha center (the Ajna Chakra), and his body slumped to the floor" .
Shyam Kolangara Indian thoughts are in fact highly modern and civilized. There is an ample amount of forgiveness and let go mentality ( where needed) . Unfortunately because of continous weaves of invasions by outsiders , India is now simply a huge mixture with other belief systems and faiths which have nothing to do with the culture of India, The original way of thinking, since the times of Maurya and Ashoka are still very Sphisticated. India is still a very modern nation. Do you know we had temples of sex ? Sex is a ridiculed in every part of the world, even in the west. Just because they have strip bars and wear skimpy clothes does not mean they are modern. It is their mind which still looks at sex in a very narrow minded way. I live here so I know it. Try telling westerners, that sex can be a means of mediation and witnessing. They dont get it. The western mind cannot look beyond the feelings of the mind and body. Indian , so called old thinking completely focussed on "Beyond the mind" It is in India where Sex was considered an art and hence we had temples and books with detaled description. India is Divine, my friend.. Today's India is a mix of other cultures unfortunately. India is extremely modern, forgiving and very feminine. It is a gift of this lifetime that our bodies do walk in a land where people came very close to knowing what god really is..
OMG!!!! my aaamchi mumbai is jst tooooo awesum yaaaaar...thnks 2 d british pple n how dey maintained d city thnks alot.....just love aamchi mumbaiii....:)
New generation should watch this. Clean city without slums. We totally failed in development after Independence. We fought each other and driven by politicians
