In Chennai, there is not this Crowd like Mumbai locals.. as its the People's main transport unlike Chennai.. Only about 30% of population use local trains as their means of transport..Now Metro has come also & more people likely to shift..

Rahul, Its too late now.. Forget 2nd Class..You wont even get a foot hold in even 1st class in Mumbai locals..I suffered for the last few years while in Mumbai going to work..So I changed to Bus ride at last and finally said Good Bye to my Amchi Mumbai after 39 yrs..

The public is still a bit irresponsible and therefore, it is very difficult to keep the stations in a pristine condition. Also, the architecture of the stations is not of agood standard and they are very old. This makes maintenance even harder. To completely renovate all the stations would be a nightmare as they would have to be almost shut down for that. Our Suburban stations don't have ticket gates unlike Metro Rail Stations, hence homeless people come inside the station and muck it up (the normal passengers are themselves not that good as many chew and spit out tobacco, throw plastic bottles and other associated trash all around the station premises). And, last but not the least, why should the people of Mumbai, which is a very hot and humid place, wear shoes and socks? Just for looks! You do realize how uncomfortable it would be.

There is no doors

There are sliding doors. Close to 7-10 million people travel daily up-down on 3 lines.

There are new latest trains as well as old trains. And some platforms are old and some are renovated.

Most of the stations are of British era
