Redstone torches are way better than normal torches

they use their camera accounts on hermitcraft to fill in caves with torches. they also have a command that removes mobs that picked up items since those won't despawn

In hermitcraft they're allowed to use spectator mode provided they have a separate account (camera account) that is permanently in spectator mode

im aware that they use spectator/camera accounts, im just saying in general.

No matter how many torches you wanna place, even if everything is lit, a perimeter is faster since the world does spawning checks from the highest block in that chunk, so if your lowest block is the spawning platform all spawning attempts will be instant. Farms lower down are also more efficient. So less checks + lower farm = super fast farm

If you hit f3 you can look at the entity count to check

torches dont cause lighting updates repeatedly (after being loaded iirc), performance hit from lighting is non existant in MC due to the pretty uniqe way it works code wise tho gotta say big void hole is just way cooler

@@Blue-2-u Perimeters are better, but not because of block lag. it's the way minecraft checks for spawnable locations starting at the highest nontransparent block, which in the case of big hole means it only needs to check a couple dozen y levels instead of hundreds. Thus each round of spawning mobs requires much less time. Also there's essentially no failed spawns in a perimeter farm, but I won't get into that. And of course, big hole heehoo.

Not at all. No more than having hundreds of thousands of dirt. Once the torch is placed and the light levels around it update to the state they will stay in then the torch is no different than any other block.

This wouldn't affect spawn rates, although i suppose it could potentially have a tiny effect on lag

@@alexanderlea7882 There is a small boost to rates too. It randomly picks valid blocks to spawn on, checks for obstructions, then check light level, and then spawns the mob. If it happens to pick a bunch of lit blocks, nothing will spawn at all that game tick. Valid blocks are anything opaque, excluding bedrock. You might end up squeezing out an extra >3% drops in total, but you're mostly correct that it doesn't affect spawns in any noticeable way unless you leave the grinder running for hours to compare. Natural drop rate deviation is a statistically more significant variable. Although, it may be a more statistically impactful number now that bedrock is so much deeper. There's generally more open space now too, that would need to be lit up and would result in more light check fails. That would have to be something needing a test to see if it does in fact result in a notable increase. Say maybe an extra 10%, would certainly be enough to a lot of min-maxers to consider the effort required.

Maybe it fails to spawn a mob if it fails enough checks? so torches could cause a mob spawning attempt to do nothing but a perimeter ensures the attempt has nowhere to look where it will fail

@@peeblekitty5780 Can also use a TNT machine to blast it down to bedrock. Then you can build over the new hole to make it look pretty again. That's probably the lowest effort solution, if you're looking to min-max it.

Did he post about it anywhere? I remember his first break at the start of hc 9. But Now he is just kinda gone and I can't seem to find anything about his break.

I just finished digging a perimeter by myself, by hand, in 1.19, and this comment really reassured me that giving myself carpel tunnel was the right decision.

Being a spoon is being dumb. It has been a way mumbo called himself dumb for many seasons. Mumbo often constructed a spoon counter for al the moments he did something silly.

In British English slang, spooning something means to mess it up.

To be fair doc did it properly

All entities, friendly and hostile, require a block to spawn on top of, and have to be within a certain distance from the player to spawn. Hostile entities require a certain light level in order to not spawn. By blasting the perimeter down to bedrock and having an AFK spot on top of his witch farm, he ensures that the only things that can spawn are contained within the farms he wants them to spawn in, and nowhere else, increasing efficiency. The reason torches wouldn't work is that they don't prevent friendly entities from spawning, only hostile ones, so it'd still be an efficiency loss.

@@ThatFoxxoLeo passive mobs use a different mob cap, and only spawn on grass blocks. They wouldn't effect the spawn rates of hostile mobs (passive mobs also usually don't spawn, passive mobs from worldgen normally overfill the mob cap since passive mobs don't despawn)

Back in season 6 he did a big old live stream where he tried to dig the whole perimeter. I think they started just placing tnt in a grid but they quickly realized that was dumb and built the world eater. Not 100% sure since it was so long ago but that's about it.

Yeah true but the witch hut bounding fixed is fixed meaning that this doesn't increase the efficiency that much as he could have just made the afk platfom higher

Ah yes a stacking raid farm in 1.13 the update before village and pillave, 5 years ago 2 years before the stacking designs were made. So wierd he never used them.😂

Yea Mumbo didn't make a world eater. it was Doc pioneering the ability for it to go down layers. Most world eaters are actually a chain of several world eaters at different heights. Lacks the accuracy and youd have to build it a bit lower every 10 or so blocks because the TNT wouldn't be exploding the newly exposed areas. Plus doc also added water sweepers.
