Munagaku Bachalakura Pappu is a nutritious and delicious dal made with the goodness of drumstick leaves (munagaku) and Malabar spinach (bachalakura). This healthy and flavorful dish pairs perfectly with rice or rotis, adding a boost of vitamins and minerals to your meal. Follow this easy recipe to enjoy a traditional and wholesome Andhra delicacy at home.
Ingredients:
1/2 cup toor dal (split pigeon peas)
1 cup drumstick leaves (munagaku), cleaned and chopped
1/2 cup Malabar spinach (bachalakura), chopped
1 small onion, chopped
1 tomato, chopped
2-3 green chilies, slit
1/2 teaspoon turmeric powder
1 teaspoon cumin seeds
1 teaspoon mustard seeds
1 teaspoon urad dal (split black gram)
1/2 teaspoon fenugreek seeds
2-3 dried red chilies
2-3 garlic cloves, chopped
Salt to taste
2 tablespoons oil or ghee
Fresh coriander leaves for garnish (optional)
Recipe:
Cook the Dal:
Rinse the toor dal thoroughly.
In a pressure cooker, add the toor dal, 2 cups of water, turmeric powder, and a pinch of salt.
Pressure cook for 3-4 whistles until the dal is soft and cooked. Mash the dal and set aside.
Prepare the Tempering:
In a large pan or kadai, heat the oil or ghee over medium heat.
Add mustard seeds, cumin seeds, urad dal, fenugreek seeds, and dried red chilies. Sauté until the seeds start to splutter and the dal turns golden brown.
Add the chopped garlic and green chilies. Fry for a few seconds until fragrant.
Add the chopped onions and cook until they turn translucent.
Add Vegetables:
Add the chopped tomato and cook until it becomes soft and mushy.
Add the chopped drumstick leaves (munagaku) and Malabar spinach (bachalakura). Cook for a few minutes until the greens wilt down.
Combine and Cook:
Add the cooked and mashed toor dal to the pan.
Mix well and add salt to taste. Adjust the consistency by adding water if needed.
Let the dal simmer for 5-10 minutes, allowing the flavors to meld together.
Garnish and Serve:
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves if desired.
Serve the Munagaku Bachalakura Pappu hot with steamed rice or rotis.
