A excellent review! You mentioned that you cannot find Mungyo Gallery Oil Pastels in open stock. Jerry's Artarama sells the sets and they used to offer open stock. They have discontinued selling open stock. Blick now sells the Mungyo Gallery Oil Pastel sets but does not sell individual replacement sticks. In Mungyo's catalog they list replacement sticks in boxes of 6. I have painted plein air with these oil pastels and find them to be very rich in color, easy to use and of high quality. I painted with them on Canson Mi Teintes and I had the same wonderful experience that you had.

These blended so beautifully! It seems like blending with your finger is the way to go with these. I always saw them as a “hands on” medium, but at least they don’t blow dust particles in the air the way soft pastels do! I’m excited to see what artwork you create with these. The cherries turned out so cute and I love how rich the colors are just with the first layers. I’m curious whether oil based colored pencils would go on top of them at all for details (it seems like they would just pick up the layers of oil pastel but who knows!).

I know I was so surprised by these oil pastels. They were so easy to use! They blended so well with my finger but I just layered and blended the oil pastels with themselves for the art work and that worked just as well too. Hmm I’ll have to try and see if any colored pencils will go on top. I don’t think so like you said I would think it would scrap it off but now I want to test it!

@@NaomiCoutureArt yeah the blending looked really good just with the oil pastels too! They seem a lot creamier than any oil pastels I’ve tried

@@AlexisCassandraArt I have only tried the paul rubens and they are much creamier then them. I am curious to try a few Senellier because I think they are supposed to be really soft and creamy too.

Thank you. you did like the Paul Rubens ones right? Though i remember you mentioning a few them were dryer. Or are you just not a fan of oil pastels in general? I did enjoy using these ones, but mind you I have only tried two brands now.

Wow, they look deliciously smooth and vibrant; I want them! 😂 Have you tried Sennelier oil pastels? Those are incredibly soft!

Thank you, I was pretty happy with how these turned out and I especially love the background! I have not tried the Sennelier oil pastels but I have them on my wishlist, I wanted to try these first as I wasn't sure I would really like them. I'm kind of inspired to do different fruit paintings with oil pastels now all with colorful backgrounds because I just had so much fun using these lol

@@NaomiCoutureArt yes but back when I was younger, they never worked how I wanted them to work and where always messy to me. I'm trying these NUPASTEL Stix I mentioned earlier, I'm also trying to figure out how to make a layer transparent while stile holding the value of color 🤔
@NaomiCoutureArt
@NaomiCoutureArt 2 года назад
@@christopherseba5937 ah ok. You can blend the Nupastels out with water do you could do a wash to get a more transparent look and layer more heavily on top. I haven’t use them a lot but I do have a set of those too so maybe I should do a review on the as well 😄

@@NaomiCoutureArt I would watch that review plus any videos that have cool techniques or applied applications. I saw a guy use NUPASTEL to create a space nebula. He used them by shaving the stixs with a razer to show density of gaseous and also drew in more defined lines with pencil pastels. I don't have any of those yet. I also thinking about getting some Pebeo so I can save the hard lines of detail in the composition.

Thank you for this review. I had some Mungyo before and am pretty sure I was using the wrong paper because they didn't blend so easily I think it was oil paper for oil painting.

Subscribed! Glad I found your channel. Really appreciate your in-depth review. I bought the Mungyo Gallery 48 set a while back. Used them a few times and enjoyed them (but kind of forgot I had them). Your artwork really inspired me to get them out. I'll have to try that paper you recommend too. I'll be interested in how you think the fixative works when you use it. Thanks again for the review + demo - look forward to checking out your videos

Thank you, I am so happy this was helpful to you! I really enjoyed using these oil pastels, but I think they really work well on the canson paper. I know I see a lot of people say use smooth paper with oil pastels, but I just didn't like it. I feel this paper is worth the buy because if you use multiple mediums like I do, you can use colored pencil, charcoal, light layers of pastel, oil paste and I'm sure more. It's just not great for wet medium light watercolor. I should have the fixative video out next week :)

Finally an oil pastel that blends!!!!! I’ve tried dollar tree, hobby lobby, Walmart and they are all hard pastels and do not blend with finger.

These ones really are creamy and blend nicely in my opinion. They are not as soft as the senellier ones if you have tried those. I still really like these ones.

The Dollar Tree Hobby Lobby Walmart oil pastels probably have more wax and other inert materials and less pigments

Haha that’s so true! But these had a paper wrapped around them. I have baby wipes and paper towel next to me and use those when I was doing the swatches. The funny thing is I like to blend my pastel pieces out with my fingers but can’t stand holding the stick of pastel…I think I’m broke lol

Hi, thank for watching. I couldn't find any lightfast information about them. Also there was no pigment information just the names that they give to each stick. I'm pretty sure these are between student and artist grade. For the price of these I doubt they are lightfast, but I'm not 100% sure.

Should I go with Mungyo Gallery soft pastels or soft oil pastels?
@NaomiCoutureArt
@NaomiCoutureArt Год назад
Hi, sorry for the late reply. They are very different so it depends what you prefer. The pastel ones are dryer and will layer over top of each other opaquely though you can blend the colors together if wanted. The oil ones will blend on top of each color like oil paints. I would get a small set of both and see which you prefer before buying a larger set and finding out you don't like them.
