I always wanted to live in Berlin, and then ended up in Munich. :D Actually, I was happy after a while. I think Berlin is better as a tourist, quite an exciting place (although I also think it has seen its best years). Munich is just a very good place to live and work (except for the rents). It always feels a bit more boring, but also safer.

I was always excited to live in Berlin then visted it what a disappointment city full if loosers they city looks like it stopped in 1960 just a very ugly city overall maybe the ugliest west European city.

@@amanverma-es8of absolutely right. Berlin is Just a big fucking dirty city with a great amount of loosers. Is the third .biggest turkish city in the World. Berlin wouldn't be able to exist without the Support of bavaria. Because of the state financial equalization Bavaria have to pay a lot Intro this fond. And These fu....politicians in Berlin waste money at every point. Arabic clans can do whatever they want. Because of the Laissez faire policy of the interior Minister who is responsible for the police. The former president of Berlin Mr.Wowereit was more interested being on a Party and having a press Report anderwärts instand of doing his duties Berlin wasn't able to finish the Airport richte in Time and in calculation. They wasted so much money. Berlin for me is one the ugliest cities in Germany even in the World. A nice City fo me World be Hamburg. Vienna and Salzburg is also nice. Unfortunately I haven't seen so much foreign cities in order to judge. The City i liked was Budapest in hungaria. So my result Berlin is Just big, dirty and poor.

What I have noticed when I was the first time in berlin (live in Munich) is that munich is more clean than berlin. And in berlin more people ask if you wanna buy weed xD But in berlin i think is more diversity in style than in munich.

An interesting historical note, the TV tower was built by the East Germans (DDR) in the sixties. It served to remind the West berliners that East Berlin was there, they had a big TV Tower looking down on them and they could never visit it. I visited Berlin in 1962 and 1971. Yes I was very young in 1962 but I can still remember the visit vividly, As Americans we could visit East Berlin whereas the Germans could not. The guards at Checkpoint Charlie thought we were nuts to go over to the Communist side! At that time East Berlin still had endless rows of bombed-out buildings left over from World War II Eric Blankenburg

Westgermans were always allowed to visit the East. Just the other way around was forbidden. I vividly remember how we used to visit my family in the late 80's whenever possible, as we smuggled goods (coffee, butter, clothing)in my child car seat. My husband used to visit regularly when he lived in West Berlin in the seventies.

Tom well.. sometimes you should be careful before saying someone is WRONG.. BECAUSE: in the first years after the wall was built West-Berliners were not allowed to visit East-Berlin. It took 2 years for the first "Passierscheinabkommen" until they could visit their families for Christmas. Some West-Berliner "moved" to West-Germany in order to get a West-German passport with which you could enter BUT NOT with West-Berlin documents.

Munich is much more dense and crowded than Berlin. And it is very concreted over and thus not very green, among the 79 major German cities it ranks just 74th in the share of green space. So where do you want to hang out?

I have been to Berlin several times and i really love it. There is always much more exciting stuff to do than you could possibly do in your time - so it is never boring. Also, when i was still a student, Berlin was quite affordable. But it is a city that offers so much - except a natural feeling of tranquility. That is - i know Berlin is surrounded by beautiful nature and people from Berlin of course find quite and relaxation there. I just mean the "feeling" i had of the city as a tourist. Late summer last year was the first and so far only time i visited Munich. And pretty much from the beginning of touring the city, it oozed a feeling of slowed time, sort of. I spent a lot more time just sitting in parks or relaxing in one of the amazing beer gardens while hour after hour past by, than i had planned. However - i do not think i could have enjoyed Munich as a student as much, because it was a lot more expensive than Berlin - and even at my now teachers wage, i sometimes got a little worried about my spending. What made it really hard though was the language barrier. Some, - not all, bavarians spoke with such a thick accent that i was simply unable to understand a single word. And even when they tried to speak slowly and clearly, it was still impossible - it was just like they spoke in a foreign language .. but slower. However - people in Munich were generally much, much more friendly than people in Berlin, who often seemed a bit annoyed when addressed.

Haha, that is what an acquaintance of mine in Berlin told me, too - that it is not real rudeness, but part of the local behaviour or so. Although she said that it is more a western Berlin thing while the eastern Berlin people are usually nicer. She lives in Breslauerberg though, i do think that is east Berlin, so she might be biased.

Curious where you found all those „Bavarian speaking“ people. The majority of the inhabitants of Munich came from elsewhere in Germany and usually Hochdeutsch is spoken there.
@Alfadrottning86

@@IlluminatedDisplays oh, god - it is so long ago now - more than 10 years that i have been there. As far as i remember, it was mostly the intonation of words; the sound. That and a few different terms and words like "Grus gott" instead of "hallo or mahlzeit". But i cannot claim that it was bavarian. It could aswell have been a frankian dialect, swabian or even austrian - i do not really hear a difference there. Since it was Bavaria though .. i would have assumed it to be bavarian.

I live in Berlin, but have visited Munich. As much as I love Munich, I don't know whether I'd like it if I lived there. Berlin is so international and as a foreigner I don't feel so pressured into having to fit in. I love how big Berlin is. Every district, every neighborhood in Berlin has a whole different feel from one another. Yes Berlin is a city, but it's so spread out, there are so many trees, so many parks, so many open spaces that you forget that you're in a city of roughly four million people. As someone who's into history, Berlin definitely has an appeal for me. You can travel into east Berlin and see the Soviet buildings on Karl-Marx Allee. I'm in a building built during the DDR era with tiles on the outside. There are things that I like about Munich, but for now Berlin definitely fits me.

I live near Munich and like it. I also like Berlin very much, because it is so different to Munich, mainly due to the different way people express themselves. The eloquence and wit of Berliners fascinates me and often makes me feel as a dull Bavarian. On the other hand, we Munichians probably have our own talents, which smart Berliners would acknowledge. Some thoughts about the "Stolpersteine". I can't imagine any historic memorial that could touch ones heart more than these small inscriptions on the floor next to the front doors of the residences of Germans that were deported because they were Jews. But to be fair to Munich concerning the Stolpersteine, one must acknowledge, that there have been intensive and honest discussion about the topic.I deeply regret the final decision, but here is a citation from wikipedia: Unlike many other German towns, the city council of Munich in 2004 rejected the installation of stolpersteine on public property, following objections raised by Munich's Jewish community (and particularly its chairwoman, Charlotte Knobloch, then also President of the Central Council of Jews in Germany, and herself a former victim of Nazi persecution). She objected to the idea that the names of murdered Jews should be inserted in the pavement, so that people might accidentally step on them with their feet. The vice president of the Central Council, Salomon Korn, however, warmly welcomed the idea at the same time. Christian Ude, then mayor of Munich, warned against an "inflation of monuments". Demnig also took part in the discussion, stating that "he intends to create a memorial at the very place where the deportation started: at the homes where people had lived last".[42] The ban was reconsidered and upheld in 2015; other ways of commemoration, like plaques on the walls of individual houses, and a central memorial displaying the names of the people deported from Munich, will be set up.

Poet and writer Theodor Fontane was a sober, almost boring Prussian. He adored bis time in Munich and analysed life and society there. His judgement was that life in Munich was liberal and casual because of its many artists. For a law-abiding Prussian that must have come close to anarchy. But for the rest of Bavaria he only felt contempt. He called it narrow-minded and "beery"

Interesting video. I did not know that there are no "Stolpersteine" in Munich. I think "Stolpersteine" are important but it seems that some cities want to "wipe out" the past. Differences between Munich and Berlin? you'd better ask for things they have in common because the list would be shorter. I love both cities but Munich is the sunny, clean, rich, mainstream, gastronomical, fairy-tale, "Schickimicki" city of the South with well dressed people, wearing huge sunglasses, kissing everybody on the cheek and Berlin is everything but that.

The kissing on the cheek in Germany originated from Berlin, to be specific: the French sector. Munich however is Germany's plastic surgery capitol. Nowhere else in Germany there is as much fake breasts and lifted faces ^^

As far as I know, the city government of Munich did not want the "Stolpersteine", because there's an ongoing debate whether it's the right way of commemoration to have such stones in the ground where everybody walks over them with their shoes. It has nothing to do with "wiping out the past". In my personal opinion, the "Stolpersteine" are a great invention. We have them here in the city of Freiburg, too, where I live.

another way to look at this: to read them stones properly you have to bow, isn't that a gesture of humility? in my opinion the Munich "debate" is just another try not to proceeding. Munich is also a very important city concerning the rise of the Nazis, they just don't like being reminded.

Well I don't agree about the rivers. The Spree in Berlin ist not so big and there are some boats because its flat there. The Isar in Munich ist a mountain river from the Alps and it couldt't be navigated by boats. But it's very nice, passing only 10 min walking from the old town and it has amazing parks aroung it. A lot of people go there. In summer you can swim and organise BBQs. Everyone who live in Munich knows and loves the Isat. ;-)
@HansFranke
@HansFranke 7 лет назад
Noticing a (the) river might also be related to where you stay/live. AFAIU, your Munich residence is like way away from the Isar. Living more to the city center might have resulted in a different impression. Don't you think so? In the old time I had a clear list of four cities: Munich, Berlin, New York and Tel Aviv. Nowadays only Munich and New York are left. Berlin isn't Berlin anymore and Tel Aviv has also changed beyong recognition.

Fun fact about the TV tower in Berlin: The TV tower was built in the eastern part of Berlin by the GDR government. After it was built, people recognized that the sun reflecting on the sphere on top of the tower formed a cross. And the cross is a christian sign, which wasn't much appreciated by the socialist government. There were various attempts to get rid of this reflecting cross, but they didn't succeed and gave up.

I think the main difference is the way to live in the city. Berlin is a metropole like New York or Paris or Tokio. München is just a local capital and very „provincial“. Berlin is extremely „cool“, „eddy“, „brusque“, „dirty“, „hard“, life there could be very hard and you can feel lonely and lost. München is nice, charming, small, traditionell but also a little bit bourgeois and snobby. Prices are much higher. It has also buildings from middelages, renaissance and barock. Berlin was very small before the end of 19century when it became the capital of Germany, but grow than extremely fast. But that made it, the the mentality of the people is a mixture of all parts of Germany and that the atmosphere there was a little bit like gold rush with all its negativ circumstances, this is why the people there are still very rude and „cold“. But all this creates an atmosphere which is very good for art and modern culture, so if you are interested in theatre, art, performances, dance, club culture, parties, tattoos or what ever you HAVE to go to Berlin and totally forget München (it was the capital of art around 1900 ...). As I said, life in Berlin could be hard, because the people are hard but in an other way its much easier. Apartments are much cheaper (even it became expensive the last 15 years, it is still cheaper than München), you can do what you want, you could be who you want, it is a perfect city for cosmopolitan people. If you are more a country girl/boy, better stay in München, which is said to be the biggest valley of Germany. I like München and I‘m there from time to time to visit friends etc. BUT Berlin is one of the most fascinating cities of the would. I can‘t imagine to live somewhere else (may be New York or Tokio). Even Paris, where I lived for more than a year is boring compared.

Berlin seems has always seem to me very provincial in comparison with paris or London. Life can be very hard in Berlin, hmmm, that's true for most cities, that's true for Dublin, Brussels or Warsaw etc. It doesn't make Berlin a metropole. Paris is 10,000 harder than Berlin. Berlin was not a mixture of all Germans but mostly of East (Sachsen etc) and parts of what is today in Czech, Poland or in the Baltics States. It's cold because it's a northern city and has a Preussen past, and it's very German, so it's not actually colder (in the mentality) than Brandenburg or MeckPom. Berlin is very wannabee, most people who find it "so cool" are not from there (just like you) and stay between themselves and live in a bubble. More wannabee than really cool. They don't produce much (no, it's actually not a that thrilling place) but yes it's very easy to live (much easier than in Paris or London).

I'm not a big fan of Berlin. I've only been there twice, but for me, I could live the rest of my life and not visit again. Compared to München, or really any other large German city I've been to, Berlin has a lot more pan handlers and beggars. But this could be due to how much bigger it is compared to other cities. There are also a lot more gypsies. Especially at the big tourist destinations, such as Check Point Charlie, where they dress in fake American military uniforms for tourists to pay a few Euros in front of Check Point Charlie with them. And around the corner from there they had a van with a table set up to sell imitation WWII uniforms and such. They were also all over the East Side Gallery, making quick money off of tourists with parlor tricks. I've been to München three times in my life and can't recall any time where someone came up asking for money or selling cheap parlor tricks. Nor have I seen as much graffiti. As you said, Berlin has more graffiti. Even on the East Side Gallery. An art monument meant for reflection on Germany's past is now unrecogniseable and this is only a recent thing. In 2009 on my first visit to Berlin, the East Side Gallery was exactly what it was meant to be. Beautiful murals painted on what's left of The Wall, to remember and reflect on what was past and what the future could be. But in 2015 when I went to Germany it was completely unrecognizable. So much that I almost walked past my favorite mural because like every other one, it was completely covered in spray painted squiggles and writing. Another difference is that Berlin has A LOT more kebab stands and restaurants than München. I'm not a fan of kebabs. But I know it's popular with a lot of visitors and tourists alike in Berlin. Sorry if this comment was more me bashing Berlin, rather than making unbiased comparisons. Berlin just rubbed me the wrong way and I think the damage is beyond repare.

I’ve been in both city. The historical thing in Berlin is magical.. I was like 😨 in every place i saw just on tv before. It was magical. And Münich was the first city outside of my country i’ve visited and i dont know man, it capitive me, maybe because it was the first city but wtf it was VERY good. The only thing i would like is back and stay in Germany and i wouldn’t care if it was Berlin or the stunning Münich.

If you go there, make sure to make a stop in Pfaffenhofen inbetween and visit Cafe Hipp in the main square. (I highly recommand that during carnival time) It's a bit expensive, but totally worth it, their carnival ... I have no fave city, but I like the Dom of Koeln :D I also feel really at home in the town where my granma lives (I was born there :D). The place is called Franeker in Dutch, but we Frisians call it Frjentsjer (when speaking Frisian). It has a very special planetarium. The oldest one in existance that still workd, and it runs at the same speed as our solar system :D. The whole history of that place is very interesting imo.

The whole time I was in Berlin it smelt really disgusting especially walking through the city and I've never experienced that in Munich (or any other city I've ever been to to be honest). But to be fair, Berlin's education system is so much easier. I wish we had that here :(

@azzuron7694
@azzuron7694 7 лет назад
are you not from germany? education systems are not a matter of the country but of the states, therefore there are some huge differences. And while Bavaria has propably the most toughest system, the city states like berlin and hamburg have an education system that is regarded a lot easier but also not as honored and accepted as the bavarian one. A 1,2 in berlin may be seen as a 1,9 in munich
@emmynoether9540
@emmynoether9540 7 лет назад
Azzuron Yes I know "Bildung ist Ländersache". I went to school in Berlin. I also experienced that it depends on your school inside of a state how high your grade is. What I don't know is, what makes the Bavarian school system different. Is your "Rahmenlehrplan" more demanding? If yes, this not a difference in system but in content. What is the difference in the system? The fact that primary school ends in 6th grade in Berlin instead of 4th. But that is not a particularity of Bavaria but of Berlin. I just don't know the Bavarian school system .
@simmmll8495
@simmmll8495 6 лет назад
More, tougher finals for example. For Abitur we have to do 3 written and 2 oral exams + we have to write a research paper. I can not talk much about actual content, but I think from reading over the final questions that the bavarian school system requires (a lot) more knowledge

The German logic of not wanting people to cross through red to set a good example for children always makes me laugh. You're basically saying kids should do what others are doing. I think someone else doing something wrong is the perfect opportunity to teach your children that even though someone else doesn't stick to the rules, does not mean you shouldn't either. And sometimes you're the only one doing it right. Peer pressure is how people get into drugs, lol!

I just googled this because it seemed strange to me. Stolpersteine are not an exclusively Berlin thing. In fact, they exist in lots of cities all over Germany. The city council of Munich just prohibited them from being placed in common grounds of the city. There are over 50 stones in Munich though, only that they're placed on private property. Really interesting video though! As someone from Berlin it's always fun to see someone else's perception of the city. :)

Munich is much richer and tidier. The whole city seems to be cleaned every night. There is much more police (compared to the number of inhabitants), therefore it is safer. The public administration works better and much more reliable. The airport was finished in time (contrary to Berlin). Berlin is simply more exciting - in every way! @Stolpersteine: the Jewish community in Munich didn't want to have them. In their view, the dignity of the Nazi victims would be disturbed by people walking over their names with their shoes. It's a matter of taste. The former Munich mayer, Christian Ude, had a different opinion (like in Berlin), but accepted the stance of the local Jewish community.

Wait, I thought Stolpersteine are a thing all over Germany? We have them in Regensburg, at least. Also it makes sense that Berlin has more remembrance-stuff because many tourists come there because of its history as THE city that was divided, as THE city with the Nazi government in it. I would love to see more memorials and what not in other towns and cities, but I think the fact that there's more emphasis on it in Berlin is partially due to tourists' interests and catering to those. (Again, though, I'm really confused about the Stolpersteine. I've seen them in a lot of places, and my family is from Munich so I thought I had seen them there, too, but now I'm not so sure anymore)
