The Lions were coming off an emphatic win against Leinster last weekend and Munster were looking for their second win in a row in tSouth Africa in this 2024 edition of the United Rugby Championships.
Playing in Johannesburg is no easy feat for any visiting team. At over 1700m above sea levels even the best teams in the world come to the Emirates Stadium with a great plan but sometimes they run out of steam.
In this episode of Inside Rugby I take a look at the game in detail and share my views on how it all unravelled.

Fair play to Munster from a Leinster fan. When Munster have all of their guys onboard and fit they are a very good team and I think they have an excellent chance of retaining their Championship.

Can't argue with your analysis Mark. Graham Rowntree certainly did his homework and the players delivered. They are definitely in contention for doing a two in a row. And as for altitude, I've been to Joburg a few times and even going for a 30 minute walk can be very trying so I can imagine what it's like for those players running around for 80+ minutes.

Listened to the SA commentary, though here in Ireland (Munster), Jon Smit called Munsters performance a masterclass in playing at altitude, and I"m not going to argue with a legend.

Does it debunk what a lot are saying that the altitude will affect irish playing ? As in when the summer Series?

@Sineadhawk The British and Irish Lions first played SA in Jo Burg on Aug 22nd, 1896 and they won 17-8. No issue with the altitude that day, so no excuses going forward me reckons :-)

@@markphilpottinsidesportWhen Munster is due to play in South Africa, they train their bodies for several weeks for altitude. They use the normal exercise machines and put on mouth and nose setup for the atmosphere adjustment with less O2. They did after the first year when the original SA teams joined the competition.

Excellent analysis Mark . Munster were massive. Two games , 10 pts, plus additional +25 to the points scored. They looked confident throughout. Fairly windy there today Mark.. Looks like the tail end of a hurricane !

The lions are my team. They did their best against a very good team! The lions have money problems as well as with Their stadium. The Lions did their best against a very good team. I really enjoyed watching them taking the Leinster team apart the previous week! Beautiful to watch! I really did not expect the Lions to win.

Ospreys turned over 4 South African teams this season,the altitude was evident against the Bulls after an excellent win against the Stormers. great rugby this weekend.

Hi Mark We had a question to be resolved after last weeks snall crowd at Lions v Leinster .You thought it might be because Leinster put iut their B team. After a full Munster team on show this week Lions crowd didn't seem improved to me! So perhaps still an issue?

The area around Ellis Park the stadium of the lions was always a very poor area. I would not be surprised if the area around the stadium is now crime ridden. The Lions are not a bad team. They beat the Sharks and also the Stormers two years ago. Other teams are always buying their best players!

@barryhurley4527 mate, I can't find the actual crowd numbers from both games, so I would only be guessing on this one. It appeared there were more in to see the Munster game. I am still of the belief that if Leinster's "stars" had in fact played the previous week the crowd would have been bigger, I also feel Michael's point about crime and violence which unfortunately is hugely on the rise in Jo Burg could be another reason for people staying away.
