Unfortunately the widescreen version on bluray and DVD is the true theatrical release and this scene was not shown in theaters. The scene was always in the 4:3 format video which can still be found on some DVD releases.
@@josephdockemeyer6782 The downside to the extended version is that it's not wide screen. Disney + has a wide screen version of the deleted scene as a special feature video clip. They should just go ahead and make an extended wide screen release at this point.
Not sure why Disney thought it wouldn't appeal to children, when I first saw it as a kid it explained a whole lot to me, that she left him and that Scrooge saw it as the biggest mistake of his life. If I saw the edited version as a kid I wouldn't have known she'd left and wondered why he was crying
The scene needed to be in there. It was certainly an essential turning point when Scrooge first finally thawed his heart and realized where his priorities went officially out of wack, but it's the song that drew us in as the audience. It allowed us to feel the pain Scrooge felt. Then the ghost of Christmas present took in the now broken, humbled Scrooge and helped him put himself back together, readying him to humbly face the darkness the ghost of Christmas future had to bear
This is why Michael Caine is one of the most well-respected actors in Hollywood. Even in a film primarily directed toward a young audience, his performance is nothing short of stellar. I watch this one every Christmas season. This scene brings me to tears every time.
Yeah, doing the same here. Watching the movie on netflix, and i paused, just to watch this scene. Hoping they'll add this back on a bluray release at some point, but i don't see it happening.
I used to cry at these scene as a kid because it was a whole new twist on why Scrooge was so mean towards people. He loved Belle so much that it basically screwed with his mind to the point where he doesn't want to remember it. Love is a powerful thing. You can still love someone 30 or more years after breaking up. Most people would say it's pathetic but it's reality.
+Gladalian X "Love... the only thing sillier then a merry Christmas!" Yea, this scene shows how much the break up effected his outlook on Christmas, love, and overall happiness.

You are so right. True love an concur all, even when you don't want it to.
It happens to many people, through all kinds of love. You can try to be as merry as you want but the reminder of what happened near or on that day can open an old wound over and over again.

I know completely. I can forget about how things have happened with past loves now and then, but as soon as I am reminded of them the wound in my heart re-opens and I want to cry... years later. The only thing that can heal such a thing is to find a rare love that can overtake those memories so that they are less painful.. and I mean very rare.
I'm lucky enough to own a very early DVD copy of this movie which includes this song, but it really upsets me to know that it was cut from later versions. It adds so much to Scrooge's character development, not to mention it's such a beautiful song... :(
Plus the movie ends with "The Love We Found" as a refrain to this song! When I first saw the movie in theaters this song was not in it. But later was added to the VHS and early DVD versions. I grew to love it and was really upset that it was deleted from the blu ray and not even kept in as a deleted scene feature. I didn't buy the Blu Ray because of it!
Last year, on Christmas Day, this was on ABC Family and I'd heard about the version that didn't have When Love Is Gone on it. So I was curious as to which version we were watching, and when this song didn't appear, I nearly screamed in rage.
Yeah it's utter horseshit that they decided to take this out of the film. How else could one get a real grasp of the roots of Scrooge's shrill character without showing the loss of the one love he had. it's such a powerful scene for anyone that's ever been in a relationship where the distance has grown to exceed the love left to share. The melody and lyrics encompass the mood of it all.
EpicStopMotions72 I believe the one with this song cut is the original cut though! Fortunately, I always had the VHS version... :p

It broke my heart when this song was cut from the movie. This is one of my favourites of all time and it was so insanely well executed. They did a fantastic job.
This song is pivotal to the movie, it is supposed to be bitter sweat. It marks when his world of caring for others ended. This is why death appears after the song and gonzo and Rizzo leave. It is Ebenezer's fall and he must stand up or fall on his own from here on.
My dad walked out on my family a few days before Christmas. Shortly after he left, Mom suggested we watch this movie because we needed some cheering. Things were all fine and good until this song came on. My mom started crying as the words had taken on a new meaning for us all. She even said "I'm sorry. I forgot that this song was in there."
Actually, having never seen this in the versions I've watched - it explains the tune they sing at the end of the film 'The love we found'. Melodically it mimics this :)
I don't remember if I did as a kid, but watching it now, it's sad as fuck. When he's standing there as an old man, realizing what a mistake he made... Damn.
This scene always made me sad even before I actually understood the situation. Notice that as soon as Scrooge begins singing along the young Scrooge disappears from the scene. That's likely showing that back then he really didn't think it mattered that much anyway because he cared more about the money and now as an old man he's regretting it
"These are the shadows of things that have been. That they are, what they are, do not blame me." I love how they use that classic line from the book to emphasize this song.
I thought I had gone insane when watching my DVD copy of this film and a memory of this song came to mind. I’m so glad to know this song is real and I didn’t make it up. I can’t understand why it was removed, it’s so beautiful and this actress sings it beautifully 💛
I can't handle Michael Caine crying... Breaks my heart. My dvd doesn't have this song either, it's a flippin' shame. I'll never stop looking out for a dvd that has the full version.
I think if you get the version that gives you the option for full or widescreen, and I think if you go with full screen it gives you the proper version
What made The Muppet Christmas Carol so good was Michael Caine treated his role as if it were a serious version of the material. Michael Caine doesn't act like he was in a Muppet movie.
@@Matt-pu1sn to me this is the best version of A Christmas Carol. I really think it's a genius blend of comedy and tragedy. The movie balances both so well.
This song still haunts me to this day... it gets randomly stuck in my head. Especially the part when she says "I wish you well... but I must leave you now, alone..." Her voice is beautiful, as is this song. Very well written.
I've watched this film every Christmas eve for 17 years and this is the first time I've seen this song! My parents were cheapskates and recorded it off the telly, then we got the dvd version. It was only tonight when I thought 'that was an odd cut...'
"It was almost love. It was almost always." The lyrics are both devastating and beautiful. "Yes some dreams come true, and yes some dreams fall through" is another magnificent line. I wish I could write like this.
Netflix wasn't the one who cut it - it was cut by Disney when it was re-released for bluray. If you buy the DVD, the version with the song is only viewable in the full screen and theatrical cut version. Pretty terrible, but Netflix isn't to blame - Disney is.
3:41 Bell's inner thoughts: Is he going to stay and fight for me? Young Scrooge's inner thought: Should I stay or... no, she's not worth it. 3:44 Scrooge's inner thoughts: No god why, why didnt I try harder...?
This song made me cry when I watched it, and it makes me sad and frankly angry that it's been cut. The entire POINT of the song is that he sacrificed Love for money. And yet, to give to to who? Who will receive that money once he's dead? Is he Pharaoh? CAN he take it with him when he's gone? THIS is the REASON I bought this movie digitally... and now it's Edited. WITHOUT the part that I remember falling asleep to... (yes, it was dull, But it was ALSO THE MESSAGE OF THE ENTIRE STORY)
For nearly 20 years I watched this movie with my husband and two boys. They hated this song as kids but came to understand it as adults. Now they have moved far away and we never get Christmas all together anymore. But my oldest son took a film class and had to write an essay on the best movie ever made. It's sad that people see this movie without this beautiful song and pivotal scene.
They are bringing it back in the new 4K remaster. They actually found a complete reel of the film. Reason why this was only available on older VHS and TV recordings because the original film segment of the song was lost when they wanted to re-release it for theaters, it was originally a TV movie special and somehow after making a broadcast master the original film for this segment got lost and as a result it wasn't in the theatrical release.
It’s not lame. It sums up her feelings towards him and then him listening to it as an old man with a different perspective brings clarity to his mistake in letting her go.
Just in case anyone still has notifications for comments on this video... They found this sequence and it will be restored i8n a remastered version of The Muppet Christmas Carol streaming on Disney+. Also Hi from 2020. Man I miss having fanboy arguments about stuff that wasn't deadly.
Attention, Muppet Christmas Carol fans! If you all want the movie with the When Love Is Gone song, go buy The Muppet Christmas Carol 20th Anniversary Edition DVD wherever stores are sold! It has the song you're looking for! I have it and it contains it!
They should never have cut this song out. It's central to the plot of the film and explains why Scrooge became bitter and uncaring towards the world. This scene ties the film together perfectly and without it the final song ( the love is found) makes no sense! I just hope that they remaster and re-release this version one day, as it enrages me every time I watch the movie without it!
They have this song as a deleted scene in the extras; Which is frustrating, because I have to stop the movie, play this and then resume. They should've just restored it to what it was if they were gonna do all that.
I had this on VHS when it first got released. My nan, god bless her soul, got it for the whole family to watch at Christmas. It has since been a family tradition to watch this film every Christmas eve. Unfortunately, one year the VHS was misplaced so I went out and got it on DVD and was flabbergasted to find this scene had been cut. The version I got didn't have a directors cut or extra scenes.. nada. Thanks to google I discovered this was scene was cut from the DVD port. Thanks for the upload.
This was my favorite movie as a child. I had it on vhs and the song was there. I showed my kids the movie for the first time yesterday on Disney plus and the song was gone. She just walked away from him. I stood up and said where the F is the song. Disappointing, people are saying because the kids would cry......WELL HELL YA THEY WOULD. I did as a child and it's supposed to. That was the moment that brought the emotion to the tragedy and heartbreak of his story. Damn who ever decided that was a good idea to remove the song
Heh, yeah, I have found myself getting slightly choked up at it, im 25 by the way. As a kid I was always like "ugg, this part is soooo boring!!" lol, now its such a beautiful piece of music and it really tugs at the heart strings, epically when scrooge is watching his past form walk away, like hes wishing he could say "no don't leave!".
Indeed... Just check out his expression when he hears Tiny Tim sing 'Bless Us All'. It's only now 20 years later that I notice Scrooge is really struggling not to choke up.
This song and film always sparks memorys of watching this on tv, sat next to my xmas tree with a hot choccie just before going to bed and waiting for santa to come the next day *sighs* I miss thoses days
I couldn't agree more! This movie brings back so many memories. And Michael Caine is such an amazing actor, you can actually feel what he feels in this scene. This movie is definitely a classic!
I never saw the film with the song included, I never even knew it existed until I discovered the scene a few years back on YT. But even without knowing there was a song cut, I always found the transition weird. She just says "you did once" and then leaves. No explanation, no goodbye, no emotion, nothing. It made Rizzo's sudden burst into tears over something as trivial and unemotional as that seem all the more exaggerated. I always found it strange that a movie that's so well-constructed would give so little thought to the most important part of the story... the break-up of Scrooge and Belle. Turns out it DID give the scene a lot of thought. I can see some people finding this song boring, it's definitely not in the same style as the rest of the movie. But even so, it's essential in my view. So essential, that it was missed without even knowing it existed. Very good that they found it!
The moment when Scrooge joins in the song is right up there with the scene when Charlie shovels snow in Jack Frost as one of the most moving and heartbreaking moments in the history of Christmas films, plus a moment of masterful acting from Michael... and they went and cut it!
This song is the bookend for the final number. It ties the whole story together, and somehow it has stuck in my head more than all the other songs despite many years since seeing it. The end doesn’t fully make sense without it. You need the heartrending version first so that you can experience all the healing and transformation at the end the way it was meant to be felt. I would sign a petition to bring it back.
Is it just me or doing I feel like having millions of Kleenex boxes beside me every time I hear this??!! Must have been difficult for Brian Henson to direct this movie after his father's passing as well as Richard Hunt. Meredith Braun is a fantastic singer!
Stephen Doherty I was 7 when this movie was released and my parents, having grown up in the heyday of the Muppets commented much the same, especially when Bob eulogizes Tiny Tim. The loss of Jim Henson was so sad. I'm always amazed at the quality of Muppet humor (much like Pixar) mixed with the depth of their final product. I wish people appreciated this song more.
I remember my endless search for this song before the days of RU-vid. I once thought I might have heard it in the movie Bicentennial Man, but nope it wasn't there. And, then, for a while I thought it might have been the Captain & Tennille song, "Goodbye". Nope, it was this all along.
Disney removed this song because "it doesn't appeal to young children" yet they have more than enough soppy love songs in their films? gutting, I love this song, was so disappointed when i realised it wasn't on the DVD. It could at least have been included as an extra!.
This song was cut out before Disney got to it. I found out recently that it wasn't included in the theatrical release. That sucks. If my mom hadn't bought the VHS. I would never know about this song.
I've heard rumours that they actually cut the song because it's depressing and because Christmas is a bad time of year for depressed people. Not sure if it's true or not.
christytina81 that actually makes a lot of sense. Even as a kid before knowing anything about the loss of love I could feel the melancholy tones. Still they messed with the dynamic of his character by removing this
+J Gatz I think it is stupid to remove it. The last song 'the love we found' was tied in with THIS song! It breaks it up by removing it. Plus, this song is powerful, emotional, it really showed true feelings. And like Jessica said, there is worse things on TV and movies now. No wonder today's kids have no backbone! Such wusses, I'm sorry. Glad I grew with the ORIGINAL version of the movie with THIS song in it!
They took out this scene?? This was important I thought in moving the story along and the beginning of Scrooge really starting to regret some of his parts in life!
Strangely when I was younger this was one of my favourite parts of the movie, I think the haunting and sad melody and lyrics and the turning and softening point for Scrooge
why did this song get cut? the movie didn't make sense after that. can anyone tell me how to get the full movie with this song again? it would make my year!
You would have to find a VHS version of it. Or the DVD with pan and scan, or cut screen. The regular widescreen version only has the theatrical release which this song was cut from.
Batman1989King Good to know for future shopping! :) I was heartbroken when this was first released to DVD and the song wasn't there. Is there any reason why they cut it in the first place?
My family watches this movie every year as tradition. When I was younger, this song bored the hell out of me - haha! But now that I'm older, I find it just beautiful. The passion and sadness portrayed in it is astounding. Bravissimo!
Every year I watch this movie, I have to pause it and zip over to RU-vid to watch this scene. I can’t believe they’ve cut it out. Ridiculous! Such a crucial scene and beautiful song!
This scene broke my heart. It also broke my heart in that Jim Carrey movie and the Mickey mouse one. I just feel so bad for characters who lose pretty much everything and become unpleasant people. It's why Darth Vader and Ice king in my opinion are some of the most tragic characters in history.
I would like to point out to people who own the DVD version that the song is NOT cut, per say, from the entire disc. I have discovered that this song still exists in the FULL SCREEN version. It was cut from the WIDE SCREEN version.
@CurtTheGamer From what I could find in a Google search, they used the Theatrical Release as the source material for the widescreen version since that version was already formatted for a wide screen. So the song wasn't "cut" in a traditional sense; it just never existed in the source material in the first place.
@@SergeantExtreme The Laserdisc is Widescreen and it has the song in it, so a print of the film with the song in Widescreen does exist. The print shown the test audiences before the scene was cut also onviously would have been Widescreen.
@CurtTheGamer I'm sure a print of the song in widescreen does exist, however, I'm simply saying that they used the Theatrical Release as the source material for the DVD version.
I figured it was probably removed because its kinda a sad song, and perhaps not deemed appropriate in a children's movie. I was upset they didn't include it as well. I noticed its absence immediately.
Why did those of you who hate this cut go to so much trouble? Firstly, i disagree that it needed cut but more importantly, if you don't like it, don't watch it and don't be such a hater that you had to look up this guy's post to flame him. For me, i've seen it with and without and there's just absolutely no drama to the scene without it. They didn't put in any of the dialogue from the book that gives it it's punch so without the song, his tears make no sense. As for her smiling, she's singing about it being 'almost always'. I take that to mean 'we almost made it. We almost had forever' and 'i wish you well', no animosity, no anger, just 'almost'. And watch the movement in the scene. She smiles and says 'it was almost always' and the smile slips and she walks away from Scrooge more than once and finally, she looks back 1 more time and then walks away for good. 'Almost always'.
whoa whoa whoa, this was CUT?! This is so essencial. It really had an impact on me as a kid. I didn't realize you could love someone and still have to leave them. This explains life so well.
I love this sequence, especially 3:44 where older Scrooge looks at the younger one walking away like, "Hey, wait, where are you going??" Like he can't believe he's making such a mistake, and it's already far too late.
