You can just tell that Tim's having the time of his life in this movie. He looks like a kid all hyped up on sweets in a toy shop...on Christmas morning.
We need more actors like Tim so even in a bad movie you can at least enjoy that one guy having fun and enjoy him. Actors like Tim Curry, Christopher walken, Nicholas cage you can tell just love doing anything they want.
Tim said that he was a big fan of the Muppets and always wanted to do be in a Muppets movie. This was a dream come true for him, and he's said it's one of his favorite roles of all time.
That is awesome for him, and awesome for us, because he killed it in this movie. I watched it so many times growing up, it's still one of my favorites, particularly this song.
"Tell the truth, lad. Do you really think the captain and the squire are planning to share the treasure with the likes of us? Can't hear you! No?" Though I've got to admit, a murderous pirate talking about "rightful ownership" has more than a hint of irony.
I don’t think the point of this song is to introduce morally grey areas I think the point is that bad people will pretend that their clearly black and white evil deeds are morally grey areas to manipulate you into giving them a pass or joining them. And the brazenness/ stupidly of that is comical 😂
Yep. Don't like mostvof the other muppet movies if I'm honest. The only ones I liked are muppet treasure island, muppet Christmas carol, muppets take manhattan, and muppet haunted mansion.
Oddly enough, this is the first time I caught Silver saying "Sing it lads! Show him you've been practicing!" And it actually registered. I spent the rest of the song giggling madly to myself imagining a bunch of pirates practicing singing.
+BrokenWolf1990 Yo Ho me, harties I see, you've met my handy crew, theyre just a lil scurvy, when u came aboard, they thought u were the flu, don't look me in the eye, don't ever walk my plank, I'm not much of a tailor, by the light of day, but by night I'm one hell of a sailor, I'm just a rotten toothed pirate, from davy jones bedroom
+Adam Smith "Ha-ha! Sing it, lads! Show 'im you've been practicing!" I'm seriously wondering just how much of the 'spoken' lines of the song weren't improvised by Curry himself. Then again, Muppet adaptations have always tended to be kind of brilliant, so it's entirely possible that Long John Silver breaking the fourth wall was 100% planned in the original script.
It was probably in the script - Rizzo pretty much doesn't know the fourth wall exists (his first scene is showing a bunch of tourists around... the set of Muppets Treasure Island) and the others are pretty unclear on the concept as well. Still brilliant.
Muppet movies don't have a fourth wall. The original show was explicitly the muppets putting on a show for you, the viewer. While the humans dont often acknowledge it, the muppets all know you're there. It's one of the unique things that makes the muppets so funny.
You have to be a freaking *phenomenal* actor to steal the show from *The Muppets.* And of all the human actors I've seen in this franchise, Tim Curry is *the* only one I've seen to do so. Not that the Muppets are less entertaining, they're still amazing, Tim Curry is just his own breed of wild character in this film. He was the perfect choice for the role.
***** It's a reference to Marlon Brando who also said the famous quote "I'll make him an offer he can't refuse" in Godfather as Marlon Brando played the character who said that "I coulda been a contender"
And THIS, among many other reasons, is why Muppet Treasure Island is my all-time favorite movie. Numbers 2 and 3 are Tim Burton's Batman and The Great Mouse Detective, respectively.
Thank you to Mrs Maisel for introducing this to me. I can’t stop watching. What a fantabulous song, the lyrics, the harmonies, the vocals, just an all around amazing performance! I’m just blown away and I guess I’m watching a Muppets movie tonight!
Tim Curry and the guy from Treasure Planet I think are my favorite Long John Silvers. Tim Curry because of how much fun he's having being the villain and the other guy because of how sympathetic he is.
Treasure planet is a surprisingly accurate adaptation of treasure island, and yeah, they nailed long John. This one too, is pretty darn good, and of course, it’s Tim freaking Curry!
A good chunk of my childhood was defined by movies like this, and now I am feeling nostalgic......well to fix that I am gonna binge watch this, since the video this was on is now lost to time....'sigh'
I remember eating chicken wings with my father watching this movie. I lost my father when I was fourteen. He was a mean guy, abusive. But this was our time every Friday night. He would drink bottles of Vodka (he’s Russian) and I would drink blue cheese. Haha. This is the best Muppet movie ever.
I just found out that this brilliant movie, was released on the year I was born :) Yes, I'm 19 and I still love this movie. I've watched this movie countless times!
Tim Curry seemed to be a child-at-heart. He's appeared in so many shows and films; both live-action & animated, musicals and so on that were all aimed at children. I guess that's why I've always remembered him fondly since I was little.
I was sad to discover that Tim Curry suffered a stroke and hence hasn't been in the best of health recently, and is confined to a wheelchair. Get well soon Tim.
I love the Francis Drake line. I've been waiting for an opportunity to use: "We're a festival of conviviality" for years now. God, Tim Curry kicked ass in this movie.
What I love about Tim Curry in this movie is that he plays it like he’s on of the muppets, with all the silliness there but still taking his character completely seriously. It’s awesome.
Muppets Christmas Carol is amazing because Michael Caine pretended the Muppets were fellow human actors, and played it completely seriously. Muppets Treasure Island is amazing because Tim Curry basically became a Muppet given human form and joined in the nonsense wholeheartedly.
0:54 "And i see us as members of a noble brotherhood" It is clear that Captain Long John Silver and his crew are Assassins!! Fighting against Kermit the evil Templar....
I just heard "A Professional Pirate" for the first time at the end of "The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel". Strangest song I ever heard. The lyrics are insane. It's a Muppets song. I'm glad I was sheltered from it as a child or I would have been damaged goods.
+Richard Powell I rewatched this the other day and it reminded me how much I liked pirates as a child, from doing a project about it to dressing up as Long John Silver for book day
You know, when every other children's show takes to a movie, it usually sucks. Not the Muppets though. Why? Because the writers are actually trying to create art, not money, and they care about making a lasting impression on the audience. Even though I've grown to old too enjoy this film on the kiddie level I did years ago, I still think it a quirky, fun adaption, not devoid of sincere moments, and even adding something to the treasure island franchise(Tim Curry was a GREAT Silver).
You know he makes villainy looks so appealing like the best actors can make you want to root for the villain and maybe even join them. He does it so well in this scene. And you can tell the kid is struggling with his morals on what to do. Almost like he's saying no but also feeling sorry that he has to cut ties with this amazing person.
This will always be my favourite childhood film! Definitely my fav muppets film by far. Tim Curry is perfect in the role and all the songs are brilliant
Did you see the pirates at the gulag in Muppets Most Wanted? The first ones i noticed were Blind Pew and Black Dog. Shame that Mad Monty, Clueless Morgan, and Polly Lobster didn't appear :(.
This was the first thing I had ever seen Tim curry in and though I have liked him in other roles this has always been my favorite. She just brings such charm to long john silver and does a nice job of being cruel but also fun and nice/caring.
Well shoot, I'm sold. Where do I sign? "I could have been a lawyer, but I had too much heart" that's beautiful coming from a pirate. I had forgotten how much I love this movie.
Whats great about this part is they make the audience love the pirates just to see them betray each other later on. You are dragged into the lifestyle just like Jim is
I mean we even see them turning on each other in this very song, picking each other's pockets and even stabbing the one in the back. The crew's actions reveal the truth behind the lies Silver is telling Jim.
This song is super catchy and very fun to listen to! Thanks for uploading this! Tim Curry does a wonderful job with his amazing voice and his clever wordplay! Truly a highlight of my favorite muppet movie!
Watch IT if you're brave...Lol. If Horror movies freak you out easily, I suggest you watch it with other people around or in the daytime. Then immediately after watch Home Alone 2 or Muppet Treasure Island then he won't seem scary anymore.
This may come as a suprise to some of you, but some of those pirates in this video also appear in Muppets Most Wanted. All but Mad Monty, Polly Lobster, and Clueless Morgan appeared in that film. Correction: all but Mad Monty, Clueless Morgan, and Polly Lobster appeared. I just rembered Old Tom was indeed in Muppets Most Wanted, but he appears in a background role as a gulag prisoner.
Yeah Tim Is the best Villain actor in my opinion. I've seen no one as good as him. During the whole movie he actually felt threatening and scary. I kinda want him to meet jack sparrow.
Since Tim Curry has been cast in so many villain roles, whether it's in tv or movies, anyone get the feeling he wouldn't make a half bad Dr. Doom in the next Marvel cartoon?
