@@chesthoIe Yes. And it was a reasonable decision. But the character itself wasn't racist. It was more complicated than that. If the show was catering mainly to an audience that had plenty of experience with black kids, the impact would be different. The coding was there, but he was presented positively. In an audience of kids who may not know black kids in real life, that coding becomes a stereotype, which is why they removed it. But the original Gordon, who was not a black WOMAN, but was very influential in the early show concept, wanted to cater specifically to that audience. And in that context, it wasn't a racist character.

I'm sorry, what "conservatives" would be upset over an Asian character in a TV show? The word you're looking for is "bigot," or perhaps "racist."

He wasn't. There is a recent Sesame Street documentary, I think on HBO (but I may be mistaken) that goes through that history. It was actually very much the opposite. I was impressed, it was the first Sesame Street documentary in a long time I've seen that included that much footage and that much information I didn't already know. When they guy who plays the count hears his phone ring during the interview, and he starts counting the rings, my wife and I cracked up. He went from the interview immediately into the character, even without the puppet available.

@@JasperJanssen He was introduced because the original concept of the show was to cater to inner city and black audiences that were underserved. He was created by the original Gordon who was a black activist well in touch with the community. He wasn't offensive, at least to the sensibilities of the time. He was coded black, but not a stereotype. He was removed to appeal to a broader audience and the original Gordon left over that decision. The recently reversed course, introducing a specifically Korean coded character, recognizing that you can show these kinds of differences and celebrate them, allowing kids to see themselves represented in a positive light without removing race altogether.

My only request would've been to send every guest an incorrect muppety piece of set dressing and require it to be displayed behind them :)

There was also a craft called “The Sidewinder”, which was a land vehicle designed to operate in wooded/forested areas, and could cut down trees and dig holes as well. I only know this because I had a second-hand book about the Thunderbirds when I was a kid. It had a bunch of cutaway pictures and interesting information, and I was obsessed with it even though I had never seen Thunderbirds before.

Gotta plan for those cold winter months to come!

Here's the thing, I don't subscribe to dropout but I'm bingeing all of Um Actually on youtube, and there's still a ton to go but when I run out I am going through severe withdrawal even if season 8 starts coming out on Fridays.

It is the first episode since the beginning of the pandemic, yes. Filmed in mid-2020, probably the first filmed since around Oct 2019, when they filmed their last batch prior to the layoffs in the first week of 2020

Um, Actually, despite Muppet canon not being a thing, Muppets From Space has been considered as technically non canon, since it is an in-universe movie where the muppets play themselves. The original plan was to make the aliens dress themselves as Gonzo, only to later reveal their ugly true forms and making Gonzo feel special or something. This plan was later scrapped for a more marketable one and it's canonicity was removed.

@@eddie-roo Um, Actually, you say that this is Muppets From Space when at the point in production where the Gonzos were to be disguised as ugly aliens it was called Muppets In Space, this was the title of the film all throughout filming and was changed in post production when they realized that at no point in the film do muppets enter space (Dream sequences aside) (In all seriousness I'm kidding and you make a valid point, not often do i find myself matched in muppet knowledge so nice job!)

@@mythreepants I was born in 1980. I remember him dying, but I was too young to have any interest in watching the funeral when it was live. But I've seen it in about 5 or 6 documentaries over the years. I can't imagine too many fans of Henson (which every fan of puppets has to be) haven't seen it by now.

Um actually the eagle eyeball is so large and so tightly fit that the eagle can barely turn it within the socket but it can turn.
