Heard a Rakim interview some years ago where he addressed the freestyle "epidemic" and he said even back in the 80s a freestyle meant a verse with no real topic. Just a bunch of random hot bars. He also said that in the 80s, what every one calls freestyle now, was called off the dome. I found this interesting because I always grew up thinking freestyle meant off top just out of assumption but the way he explains it, the word makes more sense.
