Sherlock Holmes is on the case in this classic film review of Murder by Decree, the 1979 Sherlock Holmes vs Jack the Ripper thriller.... Directed by Bob Clark and starring Christopher Plummer, James Mason and Donald Sutherland.
.
In 1888 one of history’s most infamous serial killers ran amok in the Whitechapel district of Victorian London… Jack the Ripper as the killer came to be known was never caught…. But imagine for a minute that he was? Who better to catch him than the greatest detective of all time, Sherlock Holmes?
So, the basic premise of the film is Holmes (and Watson) vs jack the ripper… a very similar plot to 1965’s A Study in Terror starring John Neville as Sherlock.
Murder by Decree has everything from police corruption to psychic powers… a killer that may or not be supernatural as well as the Holmes and Watson becoming embroiled in a mission to expose something bigger and far more dangerous that could bring down the British monarchy.
Ultimately murder by decree is a very respectable entry into the sherlock Holmes filmography…
Plummer does a good job as the great detective but he’s still behind the likes of peter Cushing, basil Rathbone and the great Jeremy Brett who smashed it on tv throughout the 1980's and early 1990’s.
Murder by Decree might not be the greatest Sherlock Holmes outing on either the big or small screen, but it still mixes a classic detective story, a haunting serial killer legend and masses of conspiracy… go check it out…
