Pretty absurd when you realize just how young & closed off these kids are throwing away their entire lives. The 15 year old saying he beefs with “older people” and then saying “18 19 20 21” is just plain sad. Nobody is thinking any further than a few years in this documentary.

I was told a lot when I was a kid "You'll either be dead or in prison" by all the adults around me. So much that on my 16th b'day I remember a woman who was like a mother crying cos she couldn't believe I'd made it to 16 alive and out of juvie. When you've got no options, untreated ptsd, you're left in dangerous situations and no-one cares to help and you're told constantly that you're going to die - It gets in your brain. Why bother planning to live or trying when everyone you have around is so confident there is no reason for you to. Watch what you say to the young people around you, because they're picking up what they hear the most and believing it. In that situation making it through, and living for that day is a win. They're not 'throwing away their lives' when they're told and shown they won't have lives to live and plan for anyway.

They funny thing is they do be having family, they do be in good homes, when y'all gonna realize they do this because of social media standings, to be popular, feared, and respected. It's cool to them. It's a thrill, it has nothing to do with the environment at all. There's plenty of kids living jus like them that don't turn out like this, they actually turn out pretty damn well. This is all about choices. Everyone has a choice. No matter the circumstances because there are consequences to every choice, whether it be good or bad...even not making one has its consequence as well. Being from the Bronx, I can happily say that my teenaged son, while still in the Bronx, gets to grow up in a much nicer, safer area than his mom and I lived in. He's got a much better childhood and goes to a much better school than either of us had too. The BX isn't just all straight up pandemonium, like any other place. So I'm glad for that, but it's not like he's out of the woods yet. Yeah, we keep him occupied with things that'll keep him out of the streets, but kids are kids. We've all been there... That rebellious era. Chasing & tryna impress the wrong type of girls put me in some precarious positions unnecessarily when I was coming up. I survived by a combination of common sense and luck. I just tell my kid all the time to make good choices and never be afraid to hit me up if he finds himself in a crazy position. *Edit to Add:* As an adult, I've run into cats that I used to beef with. Once at work, and another time while taking a class at my union hall. And it's all love. Both times we've talked about how senseless a lot of the shit we used to be involved in was. Like I told someone else in the comments, cooler heads usually prevail with maturity, but so many impulsive ass kids don't live to make it to that point, smdh.

We had to run because his friends started coming after us. I then went to alfred e. Smith and saw him around cus they added a school into the building for high school drop outs. He got stomped out in front of my building, 300 e 158th st, left a blood stain on the cement. He was in a gang and wasn't up to any good. This is sad, I’m from the Bronx and have hung out in these areas, and I’m sure I’m not the only one to have friends and family from some of these places. But an unpopular opinion and even unspoken truth is that for some of these individuals, this is an escape for them and possibly fun. For some, conforming to street life is better than having nothing. Home situations are most likely terrible, financially unstable, parents aren’t around… It’s an ideal situation to come up with someone who has similar struggles to you, there’s comfort in Misery. These guys really do form Strong bonds, they hustle together they fight together, even wear each others clothing..it really does go that deep. A lot of my friends I grew up with didn’t care about school because they made enormous amounts of money from scamming and other forms of hustling . They could virtually do whatever they wanted. That lifestyle is very enticing, that’s not even including the popularity from the occasional rapping. It’s sad but A lot of these kids do feel untouchable

You're 100% right bro. My mother knows DThangs mother and from her own mouth she told me how terrible of a mother she was and how never he never had a pops, And how she never looked after DThang etc... Most of these quote on quote big bad killers literally come from nothing and grew up in horrible home's. I can't get angry at these kid's, They really don't know any better, Grew up with zero guidance and zero positive male role models. It's no wonder they do the shit that they do. If no positive strong adult role models steps in, Then death or prison is inevitable for the vast majority of these kid's growing up in the streets.

@@casket8530 You're right about that. I grew up poor white trash, think pills crack and trailers, raised by a single mom. But she loved me and my brother and despite what she was doing, she made sure to hide us from what she could, and even when we were adults NEVER encouraged or enabled us to do the stuff around us. Kids around us though, their parents didn't care. Seemed to love the drugs more than their kids, and those kids grew up to be a bad way. To this day, the hardest thing I've ever done is shrooms and I did it once. Don't even smoke cigarettes. Don't have a record, have a job and money which is unheard of where I come from. A single mother can absolutely do more for their kids than people like to let them think. Ik plenty of families of single moms whose kids went a bad way, and those moms are ratchet. I won't say the mom can always be held accountable in every situation, but they certainly can do more than we think.
@casket8530
@casket8530 Год назад
@@godwarrior3403 Thats not the issue though. A single mother can raise a child, but cannot raise a young man. It's this mentality that has devastating impact on boys and young men. I never said or implied that single mothers are incapable of loving or raising their children, I'm saying almost all prison inmates come from single mother households.
@godwarrior3403
@godwarrior3403 Год назад
@@casket8530 I think you misunderstood my comment. I was agreeing with you, but now I see I actually disagree. I may be from a white place, but still a poverty and crime stricken place where prison, crime, and death are all too common. I'm raised by single women exclusively, and as I said have never had the legal trouble or crime or drug trouble of many of those around me, because the women who raised them were ratchet. It has nothing to do with their sex. It's their character. Hood moms are almost certainly overwhelmingly ratchet women, and the ones who aren't, probably have better kids. A single woman can absolutely raise a young man, but she can't raise anything if she herself is worthless.

People still talk about a couple rappers from early Chicago drill but not much and trends come and go even faster now. Not saying it's worth losing your life if people remember you (it's not.) And I was there when crip and bloods was on the rise, I was there when OY/YG started but I didn't care for anything other than being 74 Hoova since I was cool with Black Mob Tribe and BHB. Growing up in pelham but molded by university/e Tremont. We did our dirt, did shady things, but we let the younger ones believe it was cool, thus making them more savage then we were. Growing up I always had OGs try to mentor me and teach me things other than gang banging but when they started moving, dying getting locked up...no one had the mentality to mentor the youth you see now. That's why they are beyond reckless. Kay Flock starring shit in other opps hoods, if he was under my OG at the time, Kay would've gotten the shit slapped out of him by OG and the whole block.

Sad to see it this way. I grew up in the Bronx for the first ten years of my life, but I never imagined it to get much worse. I knew it was ramping up again in the Bronx , when my dad was walking to his car after work, to find that someone had broke into his car, stole hundreds of dollars worth of high quality barber equipment, and to top it all off, a shattered window. I can't even say I'm from the Bronx without someone from a different borough, or hell even state, assuming I'm "dirty" because i grew up there, even though I now live in a quiet town across the GWB. Lucky are we to have proper guidance to prevent ourselves from falling into this never-ending circle of violence. But yes, at the end of the day, everyone is responsible for their actions. I fear for my dad, a hard working man, working in the Bronx. A few weeks ago, there was an active shooter at his job - fired bullets but thankfully no one got hurt. Dangerous times we live in. It makes you feel for all the hard working people who are trying to make a living, while having to see the city around them grow heavy with crime again.

Man, growing up in The Bronx was wild. I was from Soundview but went to school in Castle Hill. Things were popping off everyday with stabbings, jumpings, and just general gang activity. It really was like living in an open air prison. You either get down or move out the way, but you gotta know someone. I ended up getting stabbed 5 times (I had just turned 15) and that's when my mom had enough and sent me to FL. I wasn't even in a gang, but I got caught up between my friends in the Ruff Ryders and Crips beefing with this Dominican gang that was a lot bigger before the Trinitarios took over the Dominican scene. There is no such thing as being neutral once you are seen hanging with certain groups.
