J. D. Everleigh, a wealthy American, purchases a rare stamp in London from Geoffrey Blake, who says he represents Robert Coburn, a stamp agent. Everleigh begins to suspect the stamp is a counterfeit and hires private-detective Tom Martin to investigate. In London, Martin, assisted by Barney Wilson, a reformed crook, learns that the real stamp is still in the hands of Lady Hawksley but she refuses to show it to him. Martin gets friendly with Lady Hawksley's secretary, Jean Larson, and learns that Blake is a neer-do-well nephew of Lady Hawksley. Murder also rears its ugly head as Martin finds clues that seem to indicate that everybody he encounters is involved in one way or another with stamp counterfeiting.

All films with Tom Conway are absolutely worth watching and enjoyable. I was aware of his brother George Sanders in many films as I loved classic B & W while I was growing up on the 60's and 70's. But only recently had the opportunity to watch all the of Tom Conway. What a great actor. And what a heartwretching story of the family history fleeing Russia! It moved me to tears.

Tom Conway also did a real good job as Sherlock Holmes on the radio. At some point Basil Rathbone got tired of portraying Holmes and Conway took over for a year or two -- with Nigel Bruce continuing as Watson. You can pretty easily find these episodes on the internet, they might even be on youtube.

Alluring sets. Plenty of suspicious characters. Good acting. Proper twists and turns. A certain somebody is in for a unseemly stretch in the clink. The film is well done, the copy excellent, but I can't seem to be interested in the theft of a stamp: a diamond, a painting, a sculpture, something beautiful, yes, but a stamp ? A matter of taste, without a doubt. My favorite part of the movie is the magnificent Jaguar, such a great car! Thanks anyhow for sharing this.
@richardw3470
@richardw3470 2 года назад
Doesn't matter what the McGuffin is. Since it's small, pretend it's a diamond. Stamp collecting was really popular for kids since FDR was into it. George V (and VI, too, I think) were philatelists. Really a rich man's hobby, like coins.
@janegarner6739
@janegarner6739 2 года назад
Roger Maes. Yes, I agree that stamps collected for their rarity are boring, but so are diamonds & any other product valued merely because they're rare. I used to collect stamps for their beauty and/or interesting qualities, as one would collect art, but these were very cheap if not free. The collecting of rare stamps is a sort of expensive play based on capitalism, with an object given false value merely because it's rare or hard to get. Diamonds are a good example, as they are part of a controlled market. Maybe this has changed but years ago the market for high quality diamonds was controlled by the S. Africans who owned the mines, with only a certain number of these diamonds allowed on the market at any time. (Unlike many rare stamps, diamonds have an aesthetic quality, based on the diamond itself & the finesse with which it is cut, although I've never thought diamonds as beautiful as rubies or emeralds or even many common gemstones.) But diamonds have a social value in western nations as well as in many others, with diamonds being a status symbol, proof of wealth & thus power. But the art market works very similarly in modern society, with a group of very wealthy collectors controlling the market. The artwork that costs the most has little or no relation to its quality. Galleries, museums, critics, auction houses are tied into this false market. Plenty of great artists live lives of poverty & their artworks are seldom kept intact long after the artist's death, while lots of lesser artists attain wealth & recognition. Often this depends largely on who the artist knows, how good the artist is at manipulating social situations, & whether the artist is seen as a good candidate to promote in the art world. Still, at least most artwork that's valued highly monetarily is interesting to look at, if not actually beautiful. But as you say, most highly priced stamps are visually uninteresting.

Then, I've noticed that when I hit the send arrow, it changes it once again, in black print, for all to see, and infuriatingly making me look like an ignorant, and illiterate imbecile, which I am not. It has to be faulty or inferior software on this L.G. Velvet cell phone. I did not catch those mistaken words previously, until after I pushed the send arrow and saw what popped up.
