As someone who's in the middle of recovering from an extremely bad ankle break/dislocation. I've been worried about my rehab and how it's going to effect my fighting. It's very encouraging to see a one legged fighter still suiting up

The video is as always very informative. I have one question, however. Is there even a point in blocking the first two of those strikes? The ones aimed at the upper arm? I've tanked many strikes to this area in my reenactment days and I was fine. Sure, being hit in the elbow or shoulder may be a bit painful or when the impact reaches the inner part if you have it unprotected by plate. Otherwise, you just end up with some bruises. Wouldn't it be better to just ignore such strikes and go for the kill instead? Maybe there is something I'm missing here? P.S. Both that hit to the outside of the knee and follow up technique in case of a parry looked so nasty! :)
@MisdirectedSasha
@MisdirectedSasha 3 года назад
I would say it depends on what kind of armour you're wearing there and how good it is. Pommel strikes are pretty nasty when delivered by someone who means it, much more so than hits with the sword blade. Modern monosteels are probably a lot more reliable against that kind of blunt impact than medieval steels, which could be a bit inconsistent in their carbon content. It's also pretty common in art from the early 1400s, including some of the figures in Gladiatoria, to see men at arms fighting without pauldrons for better mobility, in which case taking a Mordschlag to the upper arm would be a really big problem.
@kamilszadkowski8864
@kamilszadkowski8864 3 года назад
@@MisdirectedSasha Fair points. Some iconography indeed seems to indicate that some knights/men-at-arms choose not to use puldrons or even rerebraces. But in this treaty, I believe both combatants are shown wearing full suits of armour. So I guess my point still stands. Especially that those pommel strikes aimed at the upper arm look like are putting you in fairly compromised positions if someone simply chooses to ignore them or simply started his action simultaneously. "Modern monosteels are probably a lot more reliable against that kind of blunt impact than medieval steels, which could be a bit inconsistent in their carbon content." --- True enough, but it would seem to me that there are better places to aim at rather than bices/triceps. When it comes to the upper body head, shoulders, elbows, wrists and fingers are far more vulnerable to such strikes.
@chengkuoklee5734
@chengkuoklee5734 3 года назад
Although I have very limited combat experience, allow me to share my thoughts. In actual combat there will be "foreplay of killing". Your enemy also doesn't want to get killed. They will have high alert on vital parts. Attack limbs or shoulder wouldn't give instant death but for each strike you are reducing enemy's effectiveness of their next strike. The pain on muscle is a distraction to focus on enemy. If you able to deal enough damage to muscle, eventually they might succumb. If you are lucky, hitting hard enough there is chance you may be able to disallocate his joint. If your enemy is as skillful or better than you, there will be pro-long combat. Each one is trying to accumulate advantages; create more disadvantage for your enemy until dealing final blow.

@@chengkuoklee5734 "In actual combat there will be "foreplay of killing". Your enemy also doesn't want to get killed. They will have high alert on vital parts." --- True enough, but I'm convinced that the context of this treaty is a judicial duel to first blood. Of course, that doesn't mean the combatants can't die but it makes it more unlikely to happen. "Attack limbs or shoulder wouldn't give instant death but for each strike you are reducing enemy's effectiveness of their next strike." --- People in kickboxing and MMA are blocking not only punches but alos high kicks with their hands while having zero armour. It is possible to have your arms so beat up after blocking many of such kicks to be unable to fight or at least your hands getting so slow it makes fighting difficult but making your entire strategy around this is just plain dumb, ineffective, and risky. I don't see how it would become viable in armoured combat. Especially since fighting in armour is very tiring. Shouldn't you limit any unnecessary and low reward movements to a minimum? "If you are lucky, hitting hard enough there is chance you may be able to disallocate his joint." --- This would be very lucky considering these strikes are supposed to be aimed at the bicep. "If your enemy is as skillful or better than you, there will be pro-long combat. Each one is trying to accumulate advantages; create more disadvantage for your enemy until dealing final blow." --- That's a lot of assumptions. We can not know how more or less skill would affect the duration of a fight. It all depends on the game plans formulated by both opponents and/or their fencing masters.
@chengkuoklee5734
@chengkuoklee5734 3 года назад
@@kamilszadkowski8864 there are a lot of variables in combat as focusing attack on upper body may actually a cover that your real target is hip or leg. Armoured combat is of cause tiring. Some "useless" attacks are actually fake attacks that try to test enemy's defense or to try to read enemies' movement rhythm to better anticipate their next moves. Not only medieval combat, even eastern combat has techniques focused on upper body and shoulders. By instinct head has most defense focused on. It won't be the best target until there is large enough opening invites you to do so. Striking limbs is kind of disarming your enemy in a not so ideal way. Joints could be target. In an evenly match or against someone stronger, every advantage must be exploit as much as possible, deny every disadvantage as much as possible to your enemy. That's my thought and I must admit my limited weapon sparring may not enough.
