Explains how a MURLIN (Multi-Radius Linear Nodes) trebuchet works
Plans are available through the tucsonpumpkintoss.org website, and you can reach me at murlintrebs@gmail.com.
This is moderately challenging to build, and should not be your first woodworking project without help.

beautiful design Mr. Vance, love how you explain the science behind every component that make up the whole. One day I will build one of these models the more I understand it.

A continuous cam adds inertia to the throwing arm which limits the amount of CW which can effectively be used. It's possible to make the last two sprockets continuous, as they are so short, and probably improve performance.

So, you all have obviously considered this... Why doesn't a cam, continuously presenting the ideal radius work better than the discrete sprockets?

I second this, eccentric pulley seems like the correct way to go

@@ChristopherWlezien The trade-off is the greater inertia that a continuous-pulley arm would have. It seems, seeing his later optimizations, that he figured out greater inertia hinders more than continuous pulley helps.

a continuous cam adds extra inertia to the throwing arm which reduces performance. Generally, except for the two smallest sprockets, it's a good trade to leave it discrete, and therefore lighter.

I know this isn't the right place but I haven't managed to contact Mr Vance though email. So if you see this Mr. Vance, I am an 11th grader who is hoping to test your trebuchet design for my physics class. I have seen and agree to your two terms. @captonager: I wrote a simulation and optimized with monte-carlo runs using a genetic algorithm. Its challenging math (for me at least), but the results are terrific.

Very interesting! I am curious as to how you determined the length of each of the "sprockets" that the line runs over to pull the counterweight. Also, I assume the projectile releases from the tip of the arm just before it hits the top of the frame. Very nice design.

Question about your secure-line release. Think this would work for a 50-75 lbs variant? Large Swivel Style Quick Release @ alpineoutfitters . net?

ping pong ball is too light. Counterweight to projectile mass ratio is too high. Tennis ball should work nicely, though distances will be a lot shorter since aerodynamic drag is higher on a tennis ball than a golf ball.
