Previously unheard audio of Alan improvising. Taken from an old cassette hence the poor quality and dodgy edit. The story behind it.... we had some time left at the end of a days recording session and asked Al to just improvise along to the backing track. He listened to the song just once and then we got this in one take - no drop-ins or edits. The guy was a fantastic musician and is sadly missed but fondly remembered

Monday 19th of October 2020, 00:01am. Alan, you left us on this day 31 years ago and we miss you to this day. Love to you in Heaven from all of us. Take Care Of Yourself.

The thing I really like about his playing is he would go for unusual note sequences, and it was so different to all the Van Halen clones of the 80's. He was musician not a rock star, and I hope he had the respect of his peers in his lifetime. His illness is well documented and he bore it with dignity and courage, working right to the end. His final recording was "Rocket Man" with Kate Bush in 89. He died in Westminster City Hospital 19th October 1989 of pneumonia made worse by HIV. He was a month short of his 36th birthday.

Alan's incredible, melodic playing always reminded me of another 80s star who's brilliant guitar playing often went unnoticed, that of the great NIK KERSHAW.

Both the music and early photos of Alan are treasures! He looks so young. Love the two-tone New Romantic haircut to match his sunburst strat. The music by Paparazzi reminds me of Alan's band SFX, and is a perfect vehicle for his keen improvisational talents. It doesn't suprise me that he just played right through this without any drop-ins; he was naturally gifted in that way. This is really a discovery, and on behalf of Alan & Paparazzi fans everywhere I thank you for sharing it.

Still remember reading the newspaper clipping about his passing. I was 21 at the time. Owned his SFX cd for about 25 years.

I can only echo jonsilence comments (thanks Mike for putting me on to this I wouldn't have found it - pheasantstalker massive thanks for putting it up but please, please tag this so other Murphy fans can get to hear this!). When "new" stuff like this comes up I get simultaneously elated and depressed at the same time - the elation is obvious, it's Alan! The downside, I won't ever hear him again :-( It's mad - nearly 22 years on and he almost seems to be getting more popular - love it.

It seems like there must be a wealth of unreleased material out there featuring Alan. If only it could be released officially.

Incredible. You have to tag this in a way that more people find it. Thank you so much for sharing this, what a loss to music he was.

I first heard him on the Go West album Bangs & Crashes in 1986 and have been a big fan ever since. I was happy about his joining Level 42 in 1988 as I also like them. I remember watching the Prince's Trust gig in 89 and it was apparent he wasn't well, but nonetheless he still played great. By all accounts he was a nice guy, which makes his ordeal seem worse. He wasn't a popstar, he was a musician's musician, and was respected enough to be invited by major artists to play on their records. His note sequences are incredible, and he was very fluent. Dignified to the end, and sadly missed. 1953-1989 R.I.P.

Have you heard The Fog, from The Sensual World? Alan is playing against Nigel Kennedy and its haunting. Also quite poignant.

@jonofunjonofun - I'm pretty certain the photo was taken at Odyssey studios near Marble Arch in early August 1983 but also pretty certain that this wasn't the session that this track was done at. We worked at a lot of studios but if memory serves the most likely candidate for this recording is either Sarm East or more probably RG Jones in Wimbledon - both would have been August/Sept 1983

Alan Murphy had so much "soul" in his playing . There are faster, more technical, flashier, guitarists but if they lack the heart and soul , they are really missing the essential foundation of being a true artist . Allan was a true artist . god rest his soul or maybe he has reincarnated as a songbird .

One of my favourite solos of Alan's was for S.O.S by Go West, amazingly fluent.
