Sometimes an author likes a character he or she creates so much that they continue to use them in story after story. Such is the case with Murray Leinster’s use of the fictional character Bud Gregory, who appeared 3 times in Thrilling Wonder Stories Magazine in 1947 and again in 1948.
From the April 1947 issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories Magazine let’s turn to page 50 for The Gregory Circle by Murray Leinster…
Next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast, Carthule was not the Earthman's god, but Carthule protected him while he was a guest in the temple-even if he tore the temple down! The Guest Rites by Robert Silverberg. That’s next week on The Lost Sci-Fi Podcast.

Bud Gregory is one of the best characters Leinster ever penned. Please add a few more Bud Gregory tales!

I burdened myself with reviewing one science fiction short story per day in 2024 for my X account. Once a week, I have to drive several hours. This used to be an awful waste of time in my super tight schedule until I found your channel. Now I look forward to those drives because I get to listen to the stories and then I have a freshly read story to review. Thanks, Scott, your channel is a goddam treat!

What a great story to fire the imagination. I especially liked the apocalyptic description of how to save the world. Well chosen Scott. Thank you from Vancouver Island.

This guy really had a great way of telling stories, no matter what name he signed at the bottom. A dash of humor, a pinch of irony, and add some rather impressive creative extrapolation to taste. A recipe for a readers enjoyment. I think that all of these Bud Gregory stories are by William Fitzgerald.

Yes, Murray Leinster was a great storyteller. You are correct that all the Bud Gregory stories were credited to William Fitzgerald, his real name was William Fitzgerald Jenkins, but most people know of his work under the name Murray Leinster which is why we used that name.

This is my first time hearing (or ever reading) Murray Leinster's Bud Gregory stories. This was a great tale. I had to go out for groceries and beer at about the 50-minute mark, so left it running for the dogs (your voice soothes them), did my shopping and when I got home, started from where I left off. What an enthralling tale this one was. More Bud, please!

So my voice soothes your dogs? How cool is that? I agree, it is an enthralling story and there will be more Bud Gregory tales on the podcast. Thanks for your comment and, as always, thanks for listening!!

These stories were novelized as "Out of this world." It was in our county library when I was in Jr high and I read it multiple times.

I had that issue of Thrilling Wonder back in the 90s, one of the first pulps I bought when I started collecting and reading them. Alas that collection is mostly gone. And I don't think I knew at the time that "Fitzgerald" was Leinster. Anyway that was so long ago that it's like new to me and I too vote for doing all the stories! Not that I want to add to your already heavy workload, but maybe you could try to add images of the covers of the magazines they appeared in the "see more" section? This one has a great Earl Bergey cover.

@clarkdissneyer8225 I think it's really cool that you had the issue of Thrilling Wonder Stories that contained The Gregory Circle, very cool. I've been getting a lot of response to The Gregory Circle and many people want to hear all the stories, so we will do that eventually. As for the cover images, I have no idea what you mean by the see more section. Can you enlighten me? By the way I am not going to promise to add the cover art, but never say never.

@@VintageSciFiAudiobooks Where you include more information below the video. On my phone, anyway, after the title etc. it says "see more" and you tap on it to see all the extra information.

@clarkdissneyer8225 I am pretty sure it only allows me to add text and not an image in that area.

Too many holes in the plot. You make the entirety of other people concerned look like idiots. You described the event as radiating out from a certain point. So,,, everyone concerned couldn't map the destruction abs conclude point of origin?? Nahh...

The reader didn't write the story lol. You'll have to take it up with the author who is long dead. Let me know how that goes.

Anyway it's a pulp sci-fi short story. There are always plot holes in these things. It's not claiming to be high art.
