Macron recently pretended that he had gone to Africa and advised the Paris club to write off the debt. However, experts explain that Macron’s statement is not so much a charity proposal as an attempt to put pressure on China to join the Paris Club, where African debts are being negotiated and where Beijing has so far only accepted the observer position for the past two years.
My late mother's two older brothers were gunned down in the Asaba massacre in 1967 that's why they say the wicked never go unpunished. It depends on how you want to look at Murtala's military career because some will say it was filled with controversy and ill discipline not following orders and simply being a law onto himself. As they say History is always kind to the victor.
my heartfelt condolences. killing unarmed civilians is a cowardly act. i am surprised that the u.k., us and other self-righteous countries keep it from the rest of the world. they normally receive regular intelligence reports about these things. what happened in this case?
@@ValyrianCode You are very correct. My comment was actually made with my tongue in my cheek as these countries always claim to represent the paragons of morality for the rest of us. What I was referring to is the fact that they had representatives on the ground and saw and knew what happened. I say this as a combatant in that war who never touched any unarmed friend or foe.
The man had many enemies. I also read a book published by a Briton about the civil war that Murtala Mohammed was the "mastermind" behind the anti Igbo pogroms in the 1960s throughout Northern Nigeria.
I was too young to understand the selfish intrigues behind the successive power grabs among our political elite, the effects of which are with us today, and reflect the poor state of the country.
It seems the biggest occupational hazard to a military officers in the 60s and 70s was not being killed in battle but by your own men. Great channel by the way. I'm hooked and working my way through your content. I lived in Nigeria in the 70s so I very much remember this coup. It is great getting some background details which fills in many blanks, I was too young to appreciate these at the time.. Thanks and keep up the good work.
@@IshaqIbrahim3 Did you watch the video? As a young Nigerian in the 70s I thought he was a hero. Murtala was a disaster waiting to happen, just like Buhari today.
@@sulaak OK. I was little when I heard about him portrayed as the best, but no details. I guess propaganda as usual. At that time I believe anything people tell me especially if it comes with Naira and kobo or gifts. Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha! Ha!
Lived by the gun and died by it. All of them from Murtala to Gowon OBJ and Ojukwu deserve no pity. Just plain historical analysis. The ppl I feel bad for, are those like Gen Shuwa and the innocent officers killed in the 1976 coup trial. Not to mention innocent soldiers used as sacrificial lambs in Borno. Btw Murtala was an irresponsible commander. His Asaba-Onitsha crossing was a debacle. Irredeemably proud and arrogant man.
@@samijay fair enough, but not when u or ur fathers are on the receiving end.. then again, this is Murtala we are talking about. No regard for his superior officer, Gowon. Saw himself as an NPC rep in the army by way of his familial links. Professional soldier disobeying commands and throwing fits ? Leaves the war theatre for an unauthorized leave in London ? I think not ! Too many double standards at play with him. So even if we remove the crimes... he still doesn't meet any other standards.
There is no good thing that can be said about any northern military leader. The injustice the country is experiencing under this present Buhari is the same reason why there was war in 1967. The north truly believes that if the country Nigeria breaks up our Delta State will be with them, they must be dreaming.
@@lekiegima4251 we don't care about that his name, his place of birth and his language and what he believe in are all northern ideology of jihad against the rest of the south
Im a Ghanian but the name of the Lagos international airport bothers me, even tho ive never stepped foot in Nigeria, what are we arabs now? It should be renamed..
Hey dumb ass we also have nnamdi Azikiwe airport in Abuja I bet your dumb ass sees Nigeria as Christianised for naming the airport after one of its prominent founding fathers and historical figure
It is not true that Gowon was not privy to the killings/coup of July 1966. As the killing of Igbo officers was on going, Gowon reached Danjuma in Ibadan, inquired the situation of things, Danjuma assured him that he was in control, Gowon asked him to minimize killings if possible, and above all, Ironsi reached Gowon and asked him to send a helicopter to fetch him and Fajuyi; Gowon promised, never did, and refused to pick up subsequent calls from Ironsi. Nigeria will remain a shithole country until you winners of the war begin telling the truth. You qualified Murtala as "colorful", that is an absolute misnomer--he was a sadistic crackpot who went by the sword and was rightly consumed by it. In 1966, he was a mere Captain but 10 years later (1976) he was a four-star General even though he failed both at the battlefield and as a Federal Commissioner of Communications -- that only happens in a shithole country. For 7 months in office, Ironsi promoted all of them (Northern soldiers) without promoting himself or Southern officers, but the corrupt brute, Murtala Mohammed, wasted no time in promoting himself and his fellow killer, Danjuma. Nigeria don jagajaga!
Dimka was no better though. He just happened to be the one to kill Murtala, but he was a hot headed vengeful tribalist who played a part in the July 1966 Mutiny, trying to iron out his personal vendetta against select southern officers.
From the explanations in this video, I understand that murtala Mohammed was to share power with obasanjo and danjuma which he initially didn't agree to but was coerced to accept it. Then he made a maiden speech, that certain things where done within the government without consultation ( that's him not consulted). Expectantly, either obasanjo or danjuma would take over power in turn after MM had left office, but MM made plans to hand power over to civilians, which will leave bother obasanjo and danjumo nothing..... So this grudges and perceived betrayal of plans resulted to the assassination of MM by only but two key suspects, who felt betrayed, you can deduce who they are from this story.
Well analyzed Robin Woods but I bet to disagree with you on your plot as those other two were meant to be crushed in that same coup..Get the book Tragedy of Victory written by Godwin Alabi-Isama and you can thank me later..Cheers!
Murtala Mohamed was the mastermind of the counter coup of 1966 where Aguyi Ironsi and his fellow army leaders were assassinated. Despite being a fantastic head of state, It was karma that cut his life short. Yakubu Gowon who had been overthrown by him and who he had installed as head of state after the killing of Ironsi was complicit in his assassination in 1976 by Dimka
How was Murtala a fanatastic head of state...by promoting himself many places from Brigadier to full GENERAL or promoting his friends above their seniors or sacking people without due process? MrImeandmyself07 you are talking RUBBISH! Murtala Mohammed was just a useless killer...remember the Asaba massacre, the killing of the Head of State Gen Aguiyi Ironsi...in the bloodiest coup in Nigeria!!
The problem with nigeria started by Luggard... amalgamation of the north and the south.. Luggard and the British knew exactly what they were planting with an outcome that will last for more than a century..
Despite Murtala Muhammed's recklessness, blatant disobedience, flouting of direct orders, saboteur, endangerment of the lives of his men and alleged war crimes he got promoted rapidly and immortalized after his demise, hmm Nigeria.
"In three carelessly conceived attempts, he [Murtala Muhammad] lost thousands of men and millions of dollars of dupplies." What exactly is the meaning of "carelessly conceived attempts?" Is this guy afraid to give Biafran soldiers due credit for their gallantry?
Just a point of observation, the subtitle at 09:49 reads: "In the army, tensions were already building - accelerated in part by Gowon's decision, declared on Oct 1, 1974, to renege on his '1976' pledge to hand over to the civilians." It is clear that it should be '1966'. A small and deducible, but nevertheless present yet forgivable typo. I enjoy your work on this channel. Best wishes.
No. It was 1976. Gowon, after the civil war, had promised to handover in 1976 but on independence day in 1974, he reneged on that promise that 1976 was not feasible. Thank you for the observation. However, it wasn’t a typo.
@@HistoryVille Thank you. I stand corrected. "In the army, tensions were already building - accelerated in part by Gowon's decision, declared on Oct 1, 1974, to renege on his '1976' pledge to hand over to the civilians." Might have read better thus: "In the army, tensions were already building - accelerated in part by Gowon's decision, declared on Oct 1, 1974, to renege on his pledge to hand over to the civilians in 1976."
What he has written here is correct. Don't forget that Gowon took power in 1966. He was not expected to remain in power forever so the question was always asked about when he was handing over. He promised to handover power unfailingly in 1976. However, in a national broadcast made on 1 October, 1974 Gowon shifted the 1976 handover "till further notice." He simply said that Nigeria was not ripe for civilian administration. This would later be one of the reasons for his overthrow. So the story line in this video is very correct.
@@saeedlawal6501 You’re right! Most Middle Belt were used for lots of evil killings. They’re woke now, I think. Genocide is going on in middle belt now as we speak by the Fulanis. We just need to help the Middle Belt in anyway we can.
These young soldiers were the problems of Nigeria. Many of them still very active today within the corridors of power. They hated each other and ooze with tribal sentiments and unnecessary power grabbing. The closest to each plotted the other's downfall too. They were never loyal to each other. They used each other for selfish interests and later assassinate each other. It's quite unfortunate - no wonder OBJ banned history in schools. Why did OBJ execute Dimka and co without a proper trial? Nobody knows who sent Dimka and co or maybe it was a set up too. We must continue to teach these historical facts to generations.
Bros if there is no history in school again we must bring it back. However history is here on RU-vid and people who have researched it have put them here for us. So try and search the mandate read. Now let me answer you OBJ did not execute Dimka, there was a tribunal that tried them and found them guilty, that was how Brig Bisala was implicated that was how Gowon's name was also mentioned by Dimka but the UK govt refuse to extradict Gowon to face trial.

Nigeria of today is respected more than the Nigeria led by brutal military dictators who murdered their real and imaginary opponents at will! I strongly believe IBB shouldn't be a free man!!
No ,I don’t think so! However, if he stayed longer, our slavery to the Fulanis would have been longer and deeper than it is today. Maybe, they could have made it a bloodless coup, sadly it wasn’t a Fulani affair then. What we didn’t know is that the foundation he laid is what the Fulanis are building on till tomorrow
Absolutely you are on point with this. That northern military revolution of July 1966 which Murtala Mohammed masterminded remains the blueprint of what the core North is using till today. The choice of Abuja as a Federal capital with no referandum by the people is one key example of the slavery we are in today.

Lmao Nationalist bawo 😂 I like Mohammed, and i admire the authority he commanded at such a young age, but I'm not sure what your definition of nationalist is. Murtala was an enigma and a man of extremes, so his views might have began to change when he matured and started a family and began to head the country, In that order! But the young Mohammed was extremely partisan, He was literally the NPC's enforcer in the barracks at the time, If you exclude Isaac Boro, Murtala Mohammed was the first to try to seceede, to split Nigeria in two. He commanded almost mythical loyalty from Northern Soldiers, who were mostly willing to shout "How high?" whenever he yelled "Jump". Please define Nationalist again?

Baudouin was 20 when he became The King of Belgium. Macron was 39 when he became French President. Joe Clark, youngest Canadian Prime Minister, took office one day before his 40th birthday. All three countries run by SMALL BOYS are working. Leadership is a gift and a skill, which is not essentially measured by age.
@@basseybassey6834 I think the French and Canadians of past and present will dispute that assertion. And a 20 year old hereditary monarch is simply that. And my friend, countries and its citizens figure out a way to keep working, in spite of who the rulers are. Nigerians have persisted despite over 60 years of governmental mismanagement. It is much, much easier to destroy than to build. The overall success of any country boils down to its citizens, not its rulers. But the responsibility for the destruction of any nation, resides primarily at the feel of its rulers. Remember these nuggets of wisdom, young man!
