'65 - '68 full size GMs in particular are very under appreciated by most "modern" derby drivers. Also, there are lots of "soft and squishy" cars that will take abuse all day long and keep on going (such as '65 -'68 full size Fords and '70's AMC Matadors). (By the way, here in Portland in the late '70's and early '80's I saw LOTS Chevelles, Novas, Dusters, LeMans, Tempest, Skylarks, Mustangs, etc. demoed. Very common back then and most were straight and rust free!)

I like destruction like the next guy, and sometimes you see something that shouldn't have been derbied. But not a whole dam field of 2 door classics!! Every one of those cars are getting harder to find every year. 🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬🤬

Every car out there and to Replace Anything from Floor pans and Trunk Pans To Firewalls and Fenders and Anything inside & Outside the Car. I was in the Pits this Day & Not a Single car out there was Clean Especially the Camaro and all the 68 Impalas. Every car out there was basically welded to stay together and Put together by Welded in Sheet Metel & Bondo. They were not worth Saving one bit

What a tragic waste of classic American sheet metal. Next time have an all Toyota Camry derby. There are plenty of those nasty, ugly things cluttering up our streets and this would be a great way to get rid of some of them!

@@ahurd53 Maybe not as a whole car but what about different parts like fenders or door skins or trunk lids? I'm sure there were some parts that could have been salvaged. Someone out there could have used some of that stuff.

So some derby people took the worst parts cars they could find, boo fuckin hoo. The people that bitch about these cars being smashed are the same people who won't go "save" them for 500 bucks.

That 1974 Nova was done when the subframe exited the body. That was just before the fire.

I like my classics as well but in the rust belt I've seen novas, camaros, etc. Completely gone with little frame left. Most of these cars were heavily modded to even be able to run. Atleast they did it for a good cause and certainly gave the cars their last ride.

Most if not all of them were already wasted, rusted and patched together to run. The subframe separated from the Nova.

Most if not all of these cars were so rusty they were patched together to run. And there's derby drivers that won't touch a rust bucket.

Was for fun/charity so no big prize money, so of course they went crazy plus one or two were first time driver right out of the crowd, watched a vid talking all about it.

Yep he took the carb intake and heads off the pistons were just melted to the iron dart block....carb needs to be rebuild from the 🔥 there was not evan a mile on that stroker. Best part is decker gave him a tired 5.0 h.o. mustang motor

They honestly did it to draw attention to Sanfilippo syndrome, which is what this derby is a benefit for. Almost all these cars were "parts" cars a hot rod guy had sitting in yard and were rusted beyond use. Lots of custom sheet metal work and paint to make them look like cars again, but they were almost all beyond restoration. Of coarse a few crazy guys out there...

electric fuel pumps are allowed at plenty of these events- I've run electric pumps many times- it is needed when running a carb on an engine that used to be fuel injected

According to the OP, these were rusty junk cars that were beyond restoring, so they patched them up to make them run the derby. Look at the Nova, it's whole subframe came off. Either the subframe was rotted or the unibody it was bolted to was rotted. Not even safe to drive on the street.

@@dw8840 as an owner of 3 unibodies I will say they were a horrible idea and even on solid cars the subframe is a crap shoot. I have a hard time believing that any half assed body mechanic couldn't have fixed them up. If they were that far gone, they shouldn't hold up to a hit at all. If they can be welded and patched to destroy, they can be welded and patched to drive. At the very least, slap on a tube frame and drag
