How special is a single pencil that costs $10? Well, the Musgrave Single Barrel 106 pencil represents a piece of American pencil making history. Made with Tennessee cedar that is 90+ years old, this pencil comes with an interesting story and a beautiful finish.

The 600 News are themselves gorgeous pencils. If only I had a use case for them! I have a musician friend who uses them to mark up sheet music and another who uses them for sketching. The 600 is apparently magnificent for each of those use cases!

Matt, I agree about the News pencil. It's a round pencil, which I really like, and it has a thicker core than a standard pencil, and the core is on the softer side, so it makes a nice, thick, dark line. Perfect for marking up sheet music or sketching. I keep one in my workshop, it's great for marking up wood for cuts, measurements, etc. I also do a lot of editing and correcting (I'm a teacher) and I will sometimes use the News pencil for this task. Indeed, I like to use the 600 News for designing page layouts for my newspaper.

One advantage to the harder core is that you don't need to sharpen as often which makes this vintage wood pencil last longer :)

Hi bumblesby - that's true. And this particular pencil may be the costliest single new pencil I've purchased, so if it lasts longer that's a good thing! Thanks!

I've been shy to buy these because of the cost, but I need to get a new pack of ChooChoos for my Kindergarten-aged daughter and will be adding a couple of these after the review. If simply as a collector's item and conversation piece of Americana, it's worth a one time purchase!

Hi Matt! Yes, I also delayed purchasing because of the price, but then I thought I should treat myself because I wanted one in my collection. Then I wasn't sure if I would sharpen it, but I was curious about how that 90 year old cedar would sharpen. I think I like the feel of the Harvest Professional core more than this pencil, but I love having this piece of history. Thanks!

You have such a good hand writing. Excellent quality pencil. I spent $25 for a Boston sharpener like we had in school. It is not the quality we had back in the day. It just chewed up my wife's colored pencils. Were you an English teacher ? Thanks.

To me, $10 is WAAAAAY too much for a PENCIL. No matter what it's made of, or who made it. And then ,on top of all of that, will be used occasionally. Right? It will spend more time in the box instead of what it's supposed to do. As much as that cost, you might as well put in a picture frame and hang it on your wall. Now, this is just one guys' opinion, I just think that $10 could be used better somewhere else rather than just ONE PENCIL!!

It is a lot for one pencil. I guess because they were only able to make a limited amount from this old wood, they priced them accordingly.
