The slavery thing was sad, that was butchered through adaptation. In the novel, it is clear that Rudeus takes notice of the conditions of the slaves. Rifujin went in excruciating detail as Rudeus walks around the slave market. He doesn’t say anything, but he does observe it. The director could’ve just made it clear by a closeup to Rudeus’ eyes or face, then the sad state of the slaves. Essentially, this would keep going until they meet Julie, which is the straw to break the camel’s back. Here is a slave so worse off, so unbelievably beaten that Rudeus thought that it would be a mercy to kill her, right then and there. The anime wasn’t able to portray how broken Julie actually was. She was completely neglected, beaten, abused. So, even though Rudy was just supposed to just accompany Zanoba, he interfered, talking to the girl in her language. He didn’t want to see her like this. What he related to wasn't anything surface level, it was this belief of his that the only people who can live in this world are those that want to live despite it all. He genuinely thinks that killing her would be a better mercy than forcing her into doing what she doesn’t want to do as a slave. He genuinely thinks that maybe there’s a chance that she could reincarnate and have a better life in her second one. It’s a scary thought, but it is very much Rudeus’. Because of this, he never pretentiously thought that him buying her will “save” her. He thought that he can buy her clothes, food, and the like, but it will never be “salvation”. For that, Julie needs to choose to live by her own terms, herself. So, he gave her the ultimatum. Julie, after moments of silence, said she didn’t want to die. To Rudy, that was enough for him to know that Julie, unlike his previous self, has still the drive to fight for happiness in her life. That’s all that mattered. Then, he left. HE DIDN’T BUY JULIE BTW, that’s a very weird anime implication. Zanoba bought Julie. Rudeus was literally just there to give her a way out. It was a very dark scene. I am quite sad that the novels were butchered in this episode, but I do hope you don’t judge the writer because he did really portray this scene better. I still remember it. Also, ultimately, it wasn't about Rudeus but about Zanoba buying Julie and making her be the substitute of the brother he brutally murdered, which is fucked but it shows that Zanoba is a much deeper character than anticipated. And don't worry, unlike other isekais, this will never be forgotten. Julie despite being told that she's Zanoba's adoptive sister calls Zanoba "master". This slave trade will not be ignored. It means there's drama in the future concerning this too, which I hope they adapt better than episode 6. In the end, this is all just setup.

I can shed light on some of the fan service things because there is something so cool about it once you realize what the author was intending here. In an interview, this is what he was going for: ___ "In Japanese creative works, there are two polar opposite approaches to depicting sexual life: As “sacred” or as “pleasure.” I suppose I got my inspiration because I thought there wasn't enough representation of the viewpoint that reproductive activity is natural to organisms. I think that, among the instincts of a living creature, the urge to breed is the strongest even when put alongside the urge to eat. Most living creatures will generally live their lives driven by the natural desire to leave offspring behind. That inevitably goes hand-in-hand with sexual activity. Basically, it's a natural and important aspect of being a living creature. Because it's an important part of the life of an organism, it's not wrong to call it sacred. However, it's also true that sex is associated with pleasure. You could also say that it's natural for people to treat sex as pleasure for as long as pleasure is intertwined with the act. With that in mind, when depicting the world of Mushoku Tensei, I aimed for the middle ground between “sacred” and “pleasure.” That's the vibe I was going for. Incidentally, when writing the opening act of the story, I strongly emphasized Rudeus's perspective on sex as a thing of pleasure. It's only natural because he had no experience in his previous life, so the pleasure aspect was the only side he came into contact with. Consequently, there might be a lot of people who strongly feel the pleasurable side. But that shouldn't be a surprise-you don't broadcast something sacred for all eyes to see." ___ So, Rudeus' arc when it comes to sex is quite literally going from menace to society and hedonistic to viewing sex as something more sacred and pure, which is basically what he discovered at the end of season 2 when it quite literally healed his heart. It's also why many characters express their sexuality, there were even non-straight characters expressing this which was not as represented in 2014. It's a world where sex is the normal thing and Rudeus had to navigate its intricacies, complications, and learn that it's something more than just pleasure. Ultimately, it's about family and love. Now, one of the best things here is that all of the meaningful sex scenes like Eris and Sylphie's are actually CUT TO BLACK in the novels. This actually surprises people. They would think Rifujin would show it since he spent time describing Elinalise's escapades. These scenes are sacred, not for the eyes to see. It also is a degree of respect the author puts in his characters. But Elinalise and other characters are a strong exception to this. Elinalise's sex scenes, especially in the anime, are shown. It means that it's not considered sacred, but something else entirely. It's utterly devoid of any meaning. Now, Elinalise is one of Mushoku Tensei's best female characters, so I won't spoil what her thoughts about it are. But you can think about it. The author puts a lot of thought to things, but at this point people should know that. As for Roxy's panties. Oh boy. This is very hard to explain because the anime doesn't have Rudeus' thoughts and mental gymnastics. But, essentially, this is another way, albeit a humorous way, of turning something of pleasure to something sacred. Roxy's panties were stolen because Rudeus was a pervert. But over the course of the journey, this has transformed into something else. Rudeus had this thought that religion once saved people in his old world, so he should try it too, with the person he respects it the most. The only relic of her he happened to have is her panties, unfortunately. So, he tried it and he felt actually comforted. This went on until the spirit and ideal of Roxy, and I really mean this literally, became his God. She was literally his God. He was not smelling her panties; he was literally praying to it like a glossary. In the context of episode 1, it's really sad considering that it was the only one that kept him grounded, and it was just as twisted as he was. Rather than humorous though, I actually just find it interesting. It's interesting that this happened and I'm all for it. Mushoku Tensei tackles the most taboo topics and somehow twist it to become more wholesome or disturbing. Now if you ever rewatch Season 1, that interview will be in the forefront of your mind because that's the framework for the theme of sex in the world. Personally, I find it very interesting.
