Hello friends! After my great succes with Dyers' polypore dyeing with mushrooms has now become my entire personality. So naturally on my hikes I was searching for new mushrooms to dye my wool in all kinds of colours. And I came across weeping widow (Lacrymaria Lacrybunda), which is known to dye a pinkish brown hue. Colour me intrigued. Especially as a Weeping Widow is very on theme one this here Halloween/All Saint's Day.
I mentioned an alphabetical list of mushrooms that are able to produce dye, and I'm not leaving you without resources: namyco.org/mus...
Today we're extracting the pigments out of this mushroom and dyeing some Belgian Milksheep Wool the most beautiful beige colours. I really loved this project, how about you?
Just as last time we'll dunk the wool in some modifier afterbaths: iron modifier and some wood ash lye. So strap yourselves in tight as we're going the chaos route!

This series feels like Mythbusters for natural dying! Always happy to see another experiment and how it turned out

Contrasting sounds like a great idea. Either in a carded batt, or separately spun and used for colourwork.

Love it! This reminds of the video interviewing Dorothy who was the illustrator and helped Mariam (the ladies who wrote the first book about mushroom dyeing). In it Dorthy had mentioned a Colorist who absolutely loved the colors- because mushroom dyes were the first to be able to get the subtle nuance of flesh tone colors. I love the thought of matching it with brighter or saturated colors and doing color blocking designs or contour designs. Hehehe I feel your mushroom endeavors are just another part of your fey-like personality!

I tried mushroom dyeing for the first time this past week. I created the world's palest yellow! But it worked. Natural dyeing from foraged materials is just so exciting. I don't mind the less than thrilling results.

I think all natural dyers can relate to the world's palest yellow 😁

Hi Jente, I hope you and Dries are OK xx ❣️❣️❣️ Thankyou so much for sharing this video podcast. I think I would put your Mushroom dyed fibre with the bright yellow, has a cintrast colour. I think they'd go together quite well. Happy Spinning Dying Fibre Friend 🎡🎉🐑🥰 Take care and stay safe Lots of love and Big Hugs to you both Jen xxxx ❤️❤️❤️🫂🫂🫂🫂🐕

I love other colours lightly mixed into neutrals. I'd card a bit of dark purple in to look veiny. Also idk if you like the idea of needles felting but you could make a little mushroom from some of the wool ❤

I do like the idea of needle felting, bit I haven't tried it yet 😁

@@MijnWolden maybe this is your sign to give it a go :) I have some fibre and a felting needle from a wool show so maybe i will too ;)

I'm learning so much about mushrooms! and I would definitely mix it with something bright - use it as a neutral background or contrast or something

Loved the opening music! I had to translate the Dies Irae part of the text for Latin class in high school, and it gave me a bit of a weak spot for those requiems... (My teacher put on Verdi's version as a start to that lesson, it's so amazingly dramatic!) As for the wool: maybe you could do some colourwork with both of the mushroom-dyed wools? Or spin them separately and ply them together, to get a subtle barberpole effect in the yarn?
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden 10 месяцев назад
Yes Verdi's Dies Irae is very dramatic indeed! 😁 I thought the Lacrymosa part was a great nod to the Latin name of the mushroom, Lacrymaria Lacrybunda ☺️

What would happen if you mixed two different mushrooms together maybe dyers polyp or and this one as one dye bath 🛁 just. Another suggestion since there iso many different mushrooms available to you at the moment,still interesting

Did I tell you I tried purple clover and ended up with a pale mauve, didn’t use much clover wool so more might have given a better colour

mmm there certainly was no POP of colour. I do think it would be a nice "toner downer" tho. But here's a question ... do you think that it was worth all the effort put in ? Look, it is NEVER a waste of time foraging and doing experiments - always exciting to see what you might get - but ... would you make a big batch ? The polypore is still the one to beat. And then another question ... I believe its pretty difficult to get a nice green in plant dyes, have you had any success ?
@MijnWolden
@MijnWolden 10 месяцев назад
I don't think I would make a big batch. There are easier dye materials available if I wanted a big heap of beige. But experimenting is always worth it. If the outcome were the promised pinkish Brown, that might change things though...
