This was a staple growing up in my Welsh household. A very, very simple dish. No seasoning other than sea salt.

I'm so sorry for your loss. I lost my mom in 1998 at just 50. It is very hard to carry on but when you get past the first hurdle you will start to heal. Mushy Peas was your hurdle.. Prayers for you for comfort and healing.. God Bless..

To be completely transparent, I don't like peas; but I'm up late and kind of detoxing from my kids fighting all day! Anyways... I wanted to share this moment with you. Everytime you talk about your mom, we feel your deep love for her. I loved hearing why you did certain things... because your mom did it that way. Sweet memories. Heather, I lost my momma the same year you lost your momma. I cry every time I make some of her favorite dishes. I use her cookware and make her recipes, and I feel like she is helping me cook. How was that for bad grammar lol. Just know that they are with us always. We feel them in our hearts. Love you bunches girl. Have happy holidays!

OH Heather, I'm tearing up right along with you. I've been following you since Mason was born and I lost my dad just a little over a month before you lost your mom, I remember your video about your mom very clearly and back then I was just stuck in a hole with my grief, seeing you pour your heart out and sharing your grief helped me feel no so alone. Anyway my long, drawn out point was to tell you I am so proud of you for taking this huge step, no doubt your beautiful mom was watching over you every minute. wish I was having Thanksgiving. but I haven't in three years because I am ventilated in the hospital. the peas look amazing. you are very lucky to have your Mama's gift of cooking like I have except we would fight over the crunchy part of the stuffing and the little turkey butt. my dad always won that battle. Hi Meredith, God bless! My son was on a ventilator from January to July a few years ago. He had severe pneumonia, was in a coma for a few weeks but he recovered, so many people on his ward were there for long term. My heart goes out to you!

I know it's not fun in any way at all. :( But he was at a great facility in Wyoming Michigan. The staff were fabulous and that's the cleanest hospital I have ever seen! We live about 3 hours away so couldn't go visit often. I hope the facility you are in is as good!

Happy Thanksgiving Heather! I loved this video, it warms my heart when you speak of your mother! I think you made her very proud today making the mushy peas.My husband and I watch a lot of British TV, and I have always wondered what they were. I must say I cried along with you dear one, I am blessed to still have my parents with me, and cherish them everyday, we never know what each day may bring us, so love with your whole heart. I almost lost my husband to cancer three years ago, it has been a very long road, your family, and all of your videos helped me along that terrible road. I am all about tradition! Looks delicious and easy!!!!! For my husband he comes from a Slovenian family and they traditionally make potato dumplings. (We're talking grating potatoes, adding unmeasured flour; you go by feel, eggs, and then at the very end after the dumplings are done boiling and are still hot you add sautéed onions in butter and pour them over the top!) I've never been able to duplicate until this year! They came out perfect! My husbands mom use to make them and hasn't been with us anymore! She passed several years ago! When my husband went to take a taste the look on his face was wonderful! I knew he felt home again! Thanks for reminding me and everyone on RU-vid that family is always nearby and always in our hearts! I'm thankful for memories!!!! It was so lovely seeing you honor your mother! I'm very close to my mom! In fact your juicy juice Apple peach jelly brought my mom to tears! Her mom use to make something similar and she said that it tasted exactly like her moms jelly! One of the first things I took out of my mothers house when she passed was all her canning and cooking stuff, including her hand written recipes. It has been years and I still get emotional sometimes when I make something special. I'm so thankful for all she gave me and continues to give me. It is really a great thing and I'm so glad you made that step to make something so close and dear to you. Of course, now, I'm wanting a big serving of mushy peas and a hunk of soda bread. ;-) Hugs to you and your family this holiday.

Oh, mama the bittersweet healing of losing your own mama can be heartbreaking. I'm still on my journey - my mom died 2 1/2 years and I still think of her daily. I loved seeing the way that you tried to follow the traditional way that your mom prepared the mushy peas, as difficult as it was to find the peas. My grandma taught me a lot about cooking and I love to honor her memory by cooking the way that she did. It is bittersweet though thinking about her and the times that we shared. Heather, I can so relate to you. I am an only child and both of my parents are deceased. I have a hard time with the new normal for the holidays because the past memories come flooding back in waves. I'm better, once they have passed. I hate how it affects me and those around me trying to enjoy the holidays. I just wish I could sleep through them and wake up when they're over. Yesterday, at my cousins, we told stories about those days and how wonderful they were. We struggle to make them that way for their children, and in some cases, their grandchildren. You want to do it for them while you struggle with the grief. I guess it's all normal, but a new normal that hasn't felt quite right. Thank you for sharing your holiday memories and struggle. Xoxo

Thank you for sharing this. I too am welsh but I did not grow up in a family that cooked or carried on any traditions. I'm in my 60's now and have no traditions of my family to pass along. I didn't know mushy peas were welsh but I'm thrilled to know this.

One of my special memories of my mom is her cranberry salad. I make it every Thanksgiving and Christmas! The holidays would not be the same without it! The special feelings it get as I make can’t be described! That is what memories are made of! Great job!

Heather you are one in a million. I adore you and your family. Thank you for letting me be a part of your family through your videos. I understand why it took a while before you were able to make your Mom's signature dish. My Dad passed away 17 plus years ago. Growing up we loved chili and Dad always made it from his own recipe. It was many years before I was able to even get his recipe out let alone make it. Too painful. A few years ago I was ready. Cried happy and sad tears through the whole process. When I close my eyes I can see my Dad standing at the stove making his chili. Bitter sweet for sure but darn good chili. Thanks Dad.
