The Neon Genesis Evangelion opening is probably one of the most famous tunes in all Japan. The singer earns a living just from licensing fees from karaoke places.
What I love about the intro is even when half way through the show when things go to utter and complete shit and everything goes eerie and depressing the intro just stays happy and a bop. It gives you a few minutes cooldown before the disturbing stuff to come lmao
@@edc6172 For me, the best part is that it still fits the direction the series is going as the song isn't all about good stuff happening. It's about how the world is cruel and sucks but you gotta push through it and do your best anyway, and if you do, you'll become more than you ever could have been otherwise.
Fun fact, Cruel Angel's Thesis (Evangelion's opening) is considered by the nation of Japan to be one of it's national treasures. The singer who sang it to was a full grown woman at the time, but asked to adopt a more youthful voice when singing this and really struggled to do so given how fast paced the song is.
I had met some Japanese foreign exchange students at a bar, they were abt 18-20 years old (they didnt get carded i guess?) but i had tried to talk to them about evangelion but they knew nothing about it i was flabbergasted. But they also made it a strong point that if you dont watch one piece youre a disgrace to japan lmaoo. Idk maybe there was a heavy language barrier but i figure evangelion was something i can say to a japanese native and theyd have an idea of what im talking about 😭
@@katmerele Lol, I guess I'm a disgrace to Japanese then, I tried to war h One Piece but the art style in animation form is so creepy and off putting to me I couldn't continue. 😅 Manga form is fine for me though. I wonder if Evangelion is just old enough that it's more of a generational thing because I know the score for it is technically considered one of Japan's national treasures.
I pointed it out to my friend after we got through the first few episodes, the change from the vocals to vocals with screaming to full blown screaming is definitely thorfinn's prrogression throughout
@@thegallantrayku2677 so excited to see how they do music wise in the second season cause the writing is going to be godly and if they can match the vibe with the music perfectly like last time it will be a perfect depiction of the manga 🦦
Yes, Evangelion is a very old show, it was originally animated in 1995 and it has gorgeous animation for it's time. One of the most revolutionary animes. Brought a lot of traffic to anime and manga.
@@Dr.HooWho both. It's all one big journey thematically-wise, you need to watch everything in order to see how the director Hideaki Anno's views have changed through time and how the audience's feedback had a major impact on the production of Eva itself. It's a great example to learn how art is indeed a dialogue between an author and its audience
He liked HunterXHunter opening immediately! it's an absolute modern classic i'm glad you enjoyed it, also you should definitely watch it it's a masterpiece!
From how happy HunterxHunter's theme is you'd never think it tackles some of the most dark and realist emotional storylines ever put to anime. i will never be able to forget the chimera ant arc, it doesn't even feel like anime it's so different.
@@klaedoe9042 I’d say yorknew is definitely better though due to the chimera ant arc having terrible pacing and being pretty average for the first half
@@plugshirt1762 Nah, Chimera Ant is easily better than Yorknew. For one, there's nothing wrong with CA's pacing, it needs all the time it uses for the insane complexity and depth of the arc, and it also needed all of the set up for the first 30-40 episodes in order to have the incredible climax that is the palace invasion. But even the set up is all incredible. I honestly don't comprehend how people find the set up of CA boring or think the pacing is bad. I feel like I watched a different show whenever anyone gives that take. All of the set up is really interesting world building, and I love the insane tiny but incredibly important details it explores every time it slows down and has the narrator speak. Peak fiction. York New is incredible too, really all of HxH is imo, but I really don't think it holds a candle to what an accomplishment of storytelling Chimera Ant is. It's pretty much perfect.
The vocalist's name in the HxH OP is Ono Masatoshi, he's in a power metal band called Galneryus, they also did one of the endings to HxH and it's amazing also.
As someone who doesn't watch anime but is huge into Japanese music it's really weird not to have the bands mentioned in the description, and seeing so few people talking about them in the comments_so, just in case someone is interested and finds this comment: the Code Geass opening was [band - song title] FLOW - Colours Fire Force were Mrs. Green Apple - Inferno The Vinland openings were: Survive said the Prophet - Mukanjyo Man With a Mission - Dark Crow Neon Genesis Evangelion Yoko Takahashi - Zankoku na Tenshi no Thesis Hunter x Hunter was Ono Masatoshi - departure the Rainbow opening was coldrain - We're not alone Anime tracks are usually written by well known bands and solo artists. It's a two way promotion thing - at the beginning the bands promote the [new] anime and once it gets popular the anime promotes the bands.
Thanks for the list. I noticed a mistake though. Hunter x Hunter's opening is "departure!" by Masatoshi Ono. Same singer as GALNERYUS though. But the GALNERYUS song "Hunting for your dream" is the 2nd ending, not the opening.
@@DrumRollTonyReacts so glad they mentioned the artists Man With A Mission is one of my favorite japanese rock bands they recently started doing covers of classic English rock songs but there original rock is also kick ass being a mix of rock hip hop and rap its great highly recommend looking at some other songs
Same dude. The new generation of anime fans are missing a lot for not checking it out. Such a great story of friendship and overcoming all the obstacles in life.
I HAVE to watch it. Jesus christ, the amv was incredibly amazing. Having watched 6 episodes of the show some time ago, I can only imagine how can we go that far. A planet with a sea of blood, the combats with asuka, all the other stuff... I mean, I fucking love this type of stories, the feeling of hopelessness, distopian catastrophes, deep emotions etc...
Neon Genesis Evangelion is from 1995 and considered one of the most revolutionary anime of all time. I assume you'd have a field day with the whole soundtrack. Composer Shiro Sagisu, Singer Yoko Takahashi and Voice Actress Megumi Hayashibara did some of the greatest musical work in all of anime on this show.
The last song for Rainbow: Nisha Rokubou no Shichinin is We're Not Alone by Coldrain. They have a lot of other great music but this song is so perfect for the show. For context, Rainbow is set in a violent 1955 Japan, 10 years after the US dropped the bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima. There's a scene at 35:18 where there's the flash of it from one of the characters living through it firsthand as a child. 6 teens are sent to prison where they meet "Bro," a little older mentor that teaches them what it means to be men and what it means to fight for your dreams with everything you have. So the song is violent; it's in your face but ultimately is an anthem for hope.
@@shadowreacts5618 Unlimited blade works second opening doesn’t get talked about enough! Vinland saga and Dororo are my 2 favorites but its not that far behind.
Hunter x hunter's opening is from a band called Galneryus, which is one of the best power metal bands in Japan. Extremely talented musicians, the singer has a huge range and the guitarrist (leader of the band) is insane; playing almost identically live as he does in studio.
you should consider looking for the full version of the openings, if you think it is worth it of course, remember anime openings are only the first half of the song because it is only a little minute and a half intro to hype you up, more often than not, the real gem, the crazy/good part of the song is hidden in the second half you don't listen in the opening and as always, thanks a lot for stopping constantly and having the dedication to educate us so much, I really mean it when I say I'm thankful as someone who likes the technicalities of music but is not knowledgeable about it, to have you taking us for a ride with the anime songs we like is a privilege, of course the same goes for any professional reacting and explaining things and that said, if I wanted to listen the full song no stop I would just do it in another app or just see some annoying guy going like wooooaaaa yooooo noooo that sick uuuuuuu like that annoying people that can't shut up in the movies theater without providing any valuable or educational input I wouldn't be here
I gotta say man, I normally dislike it when there’s a lot of pausing, but your Channel has really turned me around The way you break it down while feeling so immersed and interested in the artistry is actually entertaining. It’s definitely something I appreciate Nice vid as always
In think it really comes down to whether you get anything useful from the pause. Pauses where the reactor just says "that was cool" are pointless, but "this is why that's going on here is so cool" adds a reason for the pause.
@@Bobbias very true, it’s because it feels more educational in all the right ways. Him pointing specific things out also makes me listen more meticulously and helps appreciate the music
The Neon Genesis Evangelion intro, "A Cruel Angel's Thesis," is my favorite anime intro of all time, for my favorite anime of all time. Not only was this anime genre defining, but it was so impactful and influential that it's still a major name in anime in Japan to this day. Some anime come and go, some stay mostly popular in the west, but some remain in their homeland as titans of their medium. Evangelion started in 1995, and in 2021 aired its final movie. This anime covers all kinds of emotion on such a personal level that it feels real. You FEEL for these characters, and there's a reason people say they came out of it depressed, but that's not the point of the series. Evangelion shows us that yes, while the world and even ourselves might be fucked up at times, there's always good out there, and things will get better. It teaches us that it's important to love ourselves and accept that we're all flawed human beings, and that's ok. NGE came into my life at the perfect time and has stuck with me since. No anime has come close to impacting me on the same level as Evangelion did, and the opening stands as a my favorite in honor of what it did for me. I highly recommend this show, and while it can feel slow at times, some of those slow moments are the most impactful.
Since you liked the hunter x hunter opening that much, you should react to all the endings of the show they’re all phenomenal. The opening stays the same throughout the show, that’s why I’d suggest the endings. Keep going with these anime reactions, there is so much more to discover and it’s so refreshing seeing your analysis. Much love from Germany 🫶🏻🫶🏻🫶🏻🇩🇪🇩🇪🇩🇪
As a fellow musician it’s wonderful to hear you break down openings that have been played over and over again in a technical way, really helps make sense of what the meaning could be in relation to the show
It sad to see that Rainbow isnt talked about much, the anime itself is great but the OPENING always make me stop what I'm doing to sing and headbang. It was one of the most unique openings I've heard in an underrated show like that
Was fascinating to see your reaction to these! I love all of them, so it's fun to see you analyzing the chord progressions and instrumentation to pick apart all the things you enjoyed.
Omg, just watching rainbow's AMV brings back the emotions 😭. If you're interested you definitely need to watch hunter x hunter, one of the best anime out there. Rainbow is a show that totally shows the ugly and beautiful side of human beings, a must watch as well. Great reaction, looking forward to more.
The band for the rainbow opening is called coldrain. They're a Japanese metal/rock band that sings all their songs in English with vocalist being japanese american
I’d also suggest listening to some of the fight themes from Evangelion, some interesting ones are Fate, Carnage, and “This is the Dream”, for this is the dream the extended version is a good one
God bless who made that compilation for Tony. Great reaction and analysis as usual. It was really funny to me when you were listening to the HxH opening and the only thing you said about the bass was "it's cool" lmao, I was like "damn, vocals in this song are that good huh?" and indeed they are. Again, great video man, really brightens this Sunday mood Now... Part 2 anyone? 👀
Please do more of these!! Your analysis gives a ton of information about the way the songs were composed and I find them super interesting!! Keep up the work
man, tony your breakdowns are exquisite and has helped me so much in learning about the music i love and why i love it, thanks so much for all the cool stuff dude. I would strongly recommend looking at openings like Koi to Uso's Kanashii, Domestic na Kanojo's Kawaki wo Ameku, No Game No Life's This Game and Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun's Kimi Ja Nakya Dame Mitai!
Man I wish every reactor would take the time to pause and discuss stuff the way you do! It’s great to have insight during the reactions and not till the end. Love it! Keep it up 👍
Hey Tony, I really appreciate these breakdown videos. It's gotten me quite interested in music theory as a whole, and you've underlined many new ways for me to respect music.
If you liked the vocalist (Ono Masatoshi, also known as Sho) in the Hunter X Hunter Opening, then look up the band called "Galneryus" because he is the lead singer of that japanese speed metal band which is one of my top dogs of all time.
Hey Tony, really loving your deep dives into the music theory. Makes me enjoy music in a deeper way than i thought was possible. With regard to when openings swap, it's because anime is often divided up in "cours", which is a quarter of a year, and 12-13 episodes. Some shows get two cours in a row, and might just have one opening for it all, but the majority change with each cour. Long running shows that don't experience a hiatus, like One Piece, can keep the same opening for over 50 episodes. Now for some suggestions: 1. ALL Black Clover openings (but especially 3, 6 and 10) 2. King's ranking opening 2 (full version, not just the 1½ minute anime opening) 3. Noragami opening 2 4. Gaikotsu Kishi-sama, Tadaima Isekai e Odekakechuu opening 5. Magi: Labyrinth of magic opening 2 Keep up the great content, and rock on!
P.S: Code Geass and Fire Force both have 4 openings, you just reacted to the first one from both. Vinland Saga has 2 openings, you reacted to both of them. Hunter x Hunter has 6 openings, but it's the same song every time, with different visuals. Neon Genesis Evangelion and Rainbow have 1 opening each I believe.
I love the OP of Vinland Saga, but the ED is even better. Other recommended openings. BEASTARS,To Your Eternity,Kakegurui season1 season2,Ping Pong,Psycho-Pass
This reactions was GREAT! Hunter x Hunter had this song as the only opening (with slight variations) for 148 episodes! This anime has many oustanding OSTs, between the Endings and songs used during the show. The OSTs Riot and The Emperor's Time, the Zoldyck Family Theme and the Kurapika Theme (the piano is Something there), and the endings Just Awake (very interesting sound), Hunting For Your Dream and Hyori Ittai are my favorite, but honestly, everything in this show is good and very fitting. If you ever decide to react to the ones I mentioned, i'd be exctatic.
as a graphic design student we had one course across one semester that was supposed to teach us sound design since sound and visuals are pretty much enhanced by eachothers' presence. these videos have the same feel as being in one of the lectures we had, and im totally subbing to you for that!
Normally I am not a huge fan of watching music reaction videos due to excessive pausing but I find your pacing great. You let us listen to a decent chunk of the music before reacting and then rewind allowing us to listen out for what you comment on. As an added bonus we get to hear the best parts of the song multiple times. Thanks for the great video.
Hunter X Hunter opening is a classic! Just great sound overall, a perfect encapsulation of embarking on an adventure/journey, which is essentially what the show is about.
Stumbled on your channel yesterday, and today I can see this. Definitely one of the very good and very informative reaction channel out there. Glad that I found you through one of your NEMOPHILA reaction. I have to say that I have a thing for voices. A reason I love so much my anime in Japanese and never ever in dub, as long as it's possible. I love those Japanese voices. A reason I love NEMOPHILA due to Mayu's voice, etc. Now I am a straight male, and yet I have to say that Tony, you have the full package. First, very talented and very confident in doing those reaction videos. I love your way to dissect all of this. Then, I really like your voice, which is very important when listening to someone. Finally, good looking, and since it's still a video, quite important as well. Keep up the great work and stay safe out there
ngl im just as fascinated by how finely tuned your ear is even on the subtlest changes, as I am by your knowledge on the nuances and your ability to articulate them. fire dude
Absolutely never commenting usually, but i gotta say, so much people just listening to that, only looking at the visuals, never talking about the music, the details, the nuances, and then saying at the end 'wow that was crasy, looks dope, alright, on to the next one". So i REALLY love everything you have to say, you deserve way more people on your channel, you are one of the very few people who do reactions who actually are reacting, wish you the best always
A few more anime opening recommendations! Ya Boy Kongming opening, Angel beats! opening, Tokyo Ghoul opening, Fate UBW opening 2, Guilty Crown opening 1, Death Note opening 1, and Fullmetal alchemist Brotherhood opening 1. Love your videos Tony!
I agree w everyone elses recommendations, but id like to add Banana Fish openings and endings. Havent seen anyone say it yet but they are so beautiful, especially the endings. Great vid btw! We love your reactions and analysiss please keep it up! Much love from Chi!🇺🇸
@@SarahJSweetheart Definitely agree! "Red" is so beautiful, and it is from the same band as the first theme of Banana Fish, as well as the first theme of Vinland Saga, "Mukanjyo" Survive Said the Prophet is an amazing band.
HxH endings are great too. And one of the endings is sung by the same singer of the opening (if you get to react, keep in mind that the ending songs start during the episode, some seconds before it ends, so some yt videos will have a cut version of the song after removing the end of the episode)
A really beautiful and complex one is the opening of Houseki no Kuni or Land of the Lustrous. It's like fast jazz with a lot of poly rhythms. I can recommend checking it out!
@@bendover7841 The story of HxH is incredibly vast, so that's a given. However, Gon's story is completed (not to say he couldn't come back) the 2011 anime covered the "entire" story of Hunter x Hunter (it's literally the name of the story. Gon and Ging being the hunters, in the name)
@@UndergroundRose if we're only taking that part into consideration, the story isn't very long and dense even though the world building is fantastic. I don't believe it has enough substance to be considered one of the greatest stories ever told. Especially considering how many stories there are in various mediums other than just manga. I hope we can get an ending for HxH like we got for Yu Yu Hakusho. But at this point that seems like a lot to ask. I'm just happy we're getting a few more chapters.
Wow, what a pleasant surprise to see the last track be my absolute favorite Coldrain track in here(the full track too!) I ONE MILLION times recommend you check that band. One my favorite JP metalcore bands. They're so good I even like watching their live stuff, which is kinda uncommon for me to do with most artists/bands. But yeah, def should check MAYDAY by Coldrain if you up to hear more from them. That track is actually one of the later OP songs for one of the other anime OPs you heard early on in this mix(Fireforce)
Opening changes: they can happen anywhere. Some shows would actually change their op or Ed to match some large event in the story, such as adding/removing characters from the animation, having a remix/alternate version of the op/ed, or completely changing the song altogether. Typically op/ed is tied to the 'season' of a show, however long that season is (12, and 24 episodes are most common, but other lengths exist), but it's not unheard of for shows to do funky things. Neon Genesis Evangelion actually has a whole bunch of different versions of the ending, basically one for each episode (not quite) ranging from genre changes to different cast members singing it (they actually used Fly Me To The Moon as the ed)
I totally understand the feeling of deciding to watch an anime because of a sick song you heard. This happened to me when I heard Soulsaber's remix of Fairy Tail's Main Theme. I ended up really loving Fairy Tail. Anyways, if you're looking for more songs to review, any of the openings from Black Clover, any of the openings from Demon Slayer, and any of the openings from Fate (Stay Night, Zero, Extra, Apocrypha) are worth listening to.
Your arranging tips are like dew drops to complete lack of experience. Makes me listen more for choices and how things work together. Just the point about the 16th notes being transferred from the drums to the rhythm guitar (thus hunting at the function of a "rhythm" guitar) clicked for me. Now I'll be listening for those tempo variations abs who changes to what. Bits of Music education on the fly!
I have to thank the algorithm for recommending this great video to me. One of the best things I have watched recently! As a veteran anime viewer :) it was super enjoyable to re-listen these songs while getting educated in music. I know many requests will come in your way (and they are all gonna be good, anime OPs never fail) but could you break down the first intros of Soul Eater, Parasite, Baccano, Death Parade, Sakamichi no Apollon and Samurai Champloo. These are lesser known but musically diverse examples, in my opinion. And yes Hunter x Hunter rules!
Dude I swear hunter x hunter opening vocalist is something else, that tenor is actually beautiful. He also did the second ending of the series by the way, though I feel the opening was better composed
So happy you listened to the openings from Vinland Saga! They're so well done! Also it was a first for me to listen to the song from Rainbow and I might check out the anime!
@@Animeister93 eyyy! cool keep it up hope you enjoy it, it was a long time ago i watched it but if i remember correctly the last like 7 episodes or so are a bit slower and then it just ends so to not leave dissatisfied you could read the manga where the anime left off to finish the story!
Seeing some love for my favourite anime in its OP is amazing. A full version of the opening is in the final episode of Hunter x Hunter and can probably be found on RU-vid somewhere. Thanks my guy. I love hearing people listening to anime music. I'd also be happy if you did more of these, more of Jojo's OST, more of HxH OST, anything to do with anime soundtracks really!
The opening for Neon Genesis Evangelion is highly reveered as the best anime opening of all time, it's one of the few things the whole community can actually mostly agree with. Evangelion itself is one of, if not the most influential anime of all time pretty much everything that came out after Eva is indirectly or directly inspired by it. It also was a big influence in the western media market, though not as much as some other shows probably. And obviously the show itself is also one of the best ever, not the best, but one of.
It's never been regarded as the best anime opening of all time. The only people who would ever say that are ignorant americans who watched 5 anime in their life and didn't watch anime before 2009. Slam Dunk has the best openings of all time with 2 different songs and literally everyone with actual anime knowledge knows that. Not to mention Attack on Titan also left Eva to eat the dust with like 45 different openings, easily.
@@FuzzyDlop "Best" is very subjective though. And bringing up attack on titan and "ignorant americans who watched 5 anime in their life" like AOT isn't one of the most mainstream anime throughout the years ://
I have been binging your analyses of anime intros since the past couple of hours and have thoroughly enjoyed them! Also, you should absolutely watch Hunter X Hunter. Apart from being one of the best shounen animes of all time, it has some of the best soundtracks that I have heard, among all the animes I have ever watched. I would love to hear your thoughts on those soundtracks and how they elevate the characters and themes presented in the story.
If you ever come in touch with anime, be it like you, over music or in whatever other way, I can easily suggest HunterxHunter as a "must" watch. You will never experience anything like this. I'm really enjoying your videos. Like for many others it gives me a completely different view on music in general, so thanks a lot for your explanations. Looking forward to more reactions :)
Hunter X Hunter is my favorite anime of all time and from the list I thought it would be your least favorite song but im so glad you liked it as much :P never thought about how good it actually is until listening it through your perspective
Listening to these songs with you is allowing me to hear parts/aspects of them that I never heard before even though I've listened to these songs well over 100 times each.
