Now, while most Bulgarians DO NOT have anything against different people, which is obvious as Bulgaria is still considered to be one of the most tolerant countries in the region, there are some simple facts about the gypsy population that are hard to understand from a foreigner's point of view. Gypsies, although sometimes completely able to integrate into their host society, fail to do it in many cases. Gypsies have nothing to do with the European / Eastern European mentality.

Thanks for making my point. "Romanes" is definitely not "the language of the husbands", since their wives and kids also speak it. Based on the "husband" meaning of the word "rom", we can conclude that no Gypsy in the world would have willingly named his own language like that. The name of the language was derived from the artificially chosen name of the Gypsy people, not the other way round.

Well, ash, hold on a sec. First of all I would absolutely agree that all forms of discrimination are a problem and must stop. BUT, you need to understand that the problem with the gypsy population in Bulgaria is very specific AND UNLESS you lived there for some time you would be pretty much unable to understand what the problem really is. And, btw, comparing the situation in Bulgaria and Romania is also wrong as the situation is different.

And lastly, dear Turk... Bulgaria is an EU country. It is being closely monitored by Brussels and its problems are being addressed as we speak. Instead of worrying about the Bulgarians- who are eventually going to be just fine, think about your own country and ways of helping it get closer to the European values. Thus, you would do more good, trust me;)

Now I don't know where you live and where you used to live in Bulgaria but you cannot deny that gypsies DO have issues to solve and it's basically up to them to solve them, if possible. And don't tell me about the judges because this guy here was arrogant as hell! Not that I am a fan of anyone from the judges but this guy should've been taken off riht away!
The language family is called slavic mate :> It's not a combination of any languages. Influence is another thing altho. Russians speak slavic, most of the nationalities on the Balkan peninsula speak slavic and truth being told, the people who wrote the alphabet for slavic language are of Bulgarian descend. The language is original in comparison to English, which is derived from ancient norse and german languages. Language family doesn't belong to the biggest country using a language from it :)

Well... that's not very nice, is it Tchevanelly. Bulgaria is a beautiful country though and wonderful people. Would love to spend more time there! I have never been to Armenia but have met many Armenians. They have a very bad reputation across Europe, which I think is unfair. Every Armenian I have met has been great company! Friendly, warm, funny and intelligent.
I concur to your opinion. In popular conscience, "tigan" is also associated with good things, not just bad ones. "Tigan" should be used by this people as a trade mark, as a quality warranty for things they're good at (e.g. music). I know I would do that if I were one of them. Btw, I didn't say "rom" is a neologism, but, as you've put it, they're abusing the term, artificially and simplistically labeling this otherwise very distinct people as a mere nation of "husbands".

...it's not because better conditions are not offered to them, but it's simply their way of understanding life. I know it's hard to believe and there certainly are cases in Bulgaria of some discrimination against gypsies, but most of them, I must say, ARE JUSTIFIED. Now everyone would be happy if they could integrate, start working, paying their bills and so on. BUT, believe me, it is not really happening and other people suffer because of it. They also tend to steal, it's a fact...So
so before you start judging, you should consider the specifics of the situation and the fact that gypsies live not only in Bulgaria or Romania, but also in Italy, Slovakia, Hungary, the Czech Republic and so on. All these countries seem to be having some sort of a problem with gypsies. So while I completely understand the need of integration and stopping discrimination, you must understand that things are way more complicated than they might seem to be from the outside!
