Part 13 They were lying in wait, His scouts had reported on enemy movements, and they had done so with the accuracy Drenmar expected from them. The accuracy he demanded from them. Now a large convoy was about to move along one of the main roads, and 18th company could hardly believe their luck. No cover, no defence emplacements, it was the perfect spot for an ambush. And so they had gotten to work, laying out minefields, creating gun emplacements, hidden under camouflaged covers and getting snipers into position. All in all, it looked just like a road, flanked by the ruins of a destroyed city. Even the very observant eye was not likely to spot Drenmar's men hidden amongst the ruins. Drenmar had sent out one of his lieutenants as a forward spotter, and Hyperion was rather keen on performing this task well "Enemy convoy spotted, arrival in fifteen minutes maximum." This got a smirk from the old Lord-Captain, as he relayed his orders to the others "Let them advance first, hold off on activating the mines until they are well into the killzone. Hyperion, take your men around behind the convoy and hit them in the back when we have their attention. Uthran, I want you to direct heavy weapons fire from the gun emplacements, take down transports and armour." They moved slowly, like a beast that had eaten too much after a hunt and had become sluggish. Drenmar had to do everything he could to hold his brothers back from springing the trap too early out of sheer hate. The ambush had to be perfect, so that whatever beast had called on this many reinforcements and supplies would be stranded without. Such a blow could not be rushed, not even by vengeance for the dead. It had to be done methodically, which Drenmar specialised in. The younger scouts of the company were less cooperative in that regard. 18th company was where the younger brothers earned their colours as scouts, before moving into another company as a full fledged Blade. This meant that the rage in their blood was quite new to them however, and their control over it was not as firm as that of a soldier of the other companies, and their control was already faltering at times like these. It took a firm hand to keep them under control, and Drenmar had devoted his life to being just that. It was rare for the rage to take him, or one of his lieutenants, and that calmth was the only thing keeping 18th from running up to the orks and tearing them apart with their bare hands. But even Drenmar cursed the pace at which the enemy moved through the killzone. Outwardly, he would never show it, but he was also thirsting for blood after all the losses they had suffered. But perfection could not be rushed, and it was well worth the wait when the time finally came. The mines activated first. Several different types each reaped a toll on the orks as they moved along the road. Vehicles were torn to shreds, bodies were blown limb from limb, dousing the surrounding orks in the blood of their former allies, while they watched in a stunned silence. Then panic broke loose as the gun emplacements opened fire, aiming for exposed fuel tanks and ammunition storages. The resulting explosions only served to sow more panic amongst the orks, as the tanks and transports they used for cover were torn apart and usually took several dozens of the beasts with them into a fiery grave. Drenmar kept up his calm demeanor through all of this, picking off every one of the beasts that started bellowing orders to organize the orks. He never needed more than a single shot, as the boltrounds he fired always found their marks. He marked down his seventh kill when he signalled the main assault to begin. His scouts had barely even heard the order as they opened fire immediately, raining their explosive boltrounds down on the orks. This finally gave the orks a target to react to, as they could finally see what had been shooting them all this time. But as they moved to react, they were only met with more panic and confusion as the mechanical warcries of Hyperion's Reiver squads sounded from behind and among them, laying into the orks with their pistols, knives and the myriad of grenades they had been eqquiped with. The slaughter lasted for several minutes more, the orks never truly finding their bearings. What resistance there was, was quickly taken out by sniper fire and the others were quickly dealt with by a combination of heavy weapons fire, bolterfire and the Reivers running rampant amongst the orks. All in all, the two hundred members of 18th company had killed several thousands of the beasts in a single strike. Exactly as their Lord-Captain had demanded of them, trading only four of their own for these results. Drenmar quickly signalled Hyperion and Uthran to get the scouts ready to move out again, while he walked through the rubble. It took him a moment to find what he had been looking for, but when he did, a bloodthirsty smirk spread across his face. A large beast, it's shoulder blown off by a boltround, lay there. It was breathing heavily, clearly in a lot of pain. The Lord-Captain had kept it alive on purpose, just so it knew who its killer was. Normally, the Lord of the 18th would never go that far, but something had caught his eye. This ork had carried a helmet on its belt as a trophy. Something that had been clearly visible when it had been shouting its crude orders to the other beasts. Drenmar placed his knife on its throat as he picked the helmet up. The colours were unmistakable. The helmet had belonged to one of their own, one of the BLades that had fallen to the beasts. Drenmar considered thrusting the knife down to end the beast, but as he looked at the helmet again, he put the weapon away. The look of surprise on the ork's face was quickly replaced by one of horror and pain as Drenmar brought his armoured boot down on its throat, shattering the windpipe and leaving it to choke on its own blood. "That was for my brothers, Xenos filth." As he walked off, his face was once again the beacon of calmth that the Lord of the 18th represented. There were more of these beasts to kill, and he would see to it that not a single ork escaped their wrath.
