I first discovered Anthony Warlow about 20 years ago in Colony Music on Broadway. The long-time employee there told me to buy his CD because "he's the best voice in musical theater." He was absolutely right. AW's voice still takes my breath away.
Heartfelt appreciation to all who have uploaded Anthony Warlow's vocal talents to RU-vid. I have only recently discovered many of the rich and vibrant musical gifts Australia has produced and I look forward with great anticipation to my continuing search. But AW is the one to whom I keep returning. His voice speaks to my soul and has enriched my life. God bless!
He and Crawford are my favorites -- though Warlow has the edge on Crawford, since he's classically trained, and you can sure hear it! Crawford, however, has that really weird, ghostly quality that makes him so wonderfully otherworldly. So, it's a tie!
Yeah, I can't decide between Warlow and Ramin now. They're both WONDERFUL singers Edit: I am having a stroke over his voice for the 100th time, and fucked up his last name, which is why I edited.
I was lucky enough to see Anthony Warlow as the Phantom in Melbourne in the early 90's. He was spellbinding in person, even more so than in this recording.
Finally a good recording of Anthony, anyone who has seen him perform this role live will know that his voice is suited to this role like no other could ever be.
I was in Jekyll and Hyde with the guy who played Rocky on Broadway, but I didn't know Warlow did it, thanks for the tip! He seems to feel the music more than sing it. Just flows through him...
Some years ago, I travelled to Australia to see "Phantom..." in which Rob Guest was starring. It was fantastic, but shortly thereafter I had the opportiunity to see/hear Anthony Warlow and Sarah Brightman in New Zealand and I awaited the day when I could hear Anthony complete his "Phantom..." contract. That has now happened and it was utterly incredible!!! Sorry fellow kiwi Rob, you stepped into the breach as a star, but Anthony is THE MAN!
It is so long since I have listened to this. Why, I do not know. Transportation to another time & place is so complete, all encompassing, enthralling and magical. Anthony & Ana thank you for taking me to places beyond the incredible.
They need a CD for the Australian Phantom of the Opera. I wouldn't mind listening to Warlow as the Phantom. He's amazing. The first time I discovered Anthony was in Jekyll & Hyde my Complete Recording of it, and i just died. His voice is amazing.
The tone of Warlow's voice is perfectly suited to the roleof Phantom. He's been my favourite classical artist since I was a young kid...and I can't say ive heard any to his superior
While there have been many tremendous actors as the Phantom. Anthony Walow is by far my favorite! His voice is extrodinary in solid technique, unbelievable range, and a powerful charisma. Mr. Warlow has a gift most singers can dream of having. He studies diligently about not only the demanding scores but the character psychology. Whether it's musical theatre or opera he simply dazzles on stage and in the studio. He's the entire package when it comes to the performing arts. :)
He was the original Aussie phantom. He is famous for dark roles like this, but you know he is also an incredible Gilbert&Sullivan performer. Check out his G&S DVDs. He likes comedies even more, I think.
deep resonate voice. Commanding physical presence. I do not like to say that any phantom is my favorite, I think everyone brings their own unique nuances to the roll. He is amazing, as it Hugh Panaro and Ramin Karimloo! Warlow haas a very powerful operatic voice. I would choose him over Raoul any day!
I love how the Phantom is singing "sweet music" while a sinister-sounding organ is blaring in the background and he's belting in a frightening voice. Still, he's excellent.
In my opinion Michael Crawford is to this point still by far-and-away the best Phantom. Warlow is an easy second and in my opinion not many others have come close.
Woaah.... definitely one of the best phantoms! I don't know from where this audio is taken so I don't know how the actress who played Christine and actor who played Raoul sound like. But I bet they must have a hell of a job to keep up with AW's brilliant performance.
Back then it was Marina Prior as Christine and Dale Burridge as Raoul. Sadly the day I saw the show Anthony Warlow wasn't in it, and the understudy Donald Cant filled in. The next time I went, Anthony had already left and Rob Guest took over.
I love Michael Crawford. He was the first Phantom and will always remain one of the best, but Andrew Warlow is an excellent singer and he does this role credit. His tone is very balanced and pure, even in his falsetto tones.
OMG this is amazing! I am a hude fan of Michael Crawford's performance but this is just as good.. maybe even slightly better. I love the gentleness and yet strength of his singoing without any melodrama he really captures the character int he same way Crawford did. I am so sad this I didn't go to see him when he was performing in Sydney in 2008.. maybe there will be another opportunity he is only 45! I saw him on Spicks and Specks doing a send up of Frank Spencer it was hilarious!
i saw Crawford in his first month with Brightman, he certainly outshone her!!! BUT back in Australia, I was more moved by Warlow and his vocal interpretation whence i first saw him in Melbourne. His return some years later to the role was not as thrilling by any means. Crawford-ACTOR.......Warlow the SINGER!
As a Crawford fan, Warlow is superior except the whispered parts.... he whispers them instead of the whisper singing that Crawford does. I really want to hear Warlow do a version where he sings those whispered parts more like Crawford. Also making it slightly more.... affectionate... which I know he can do, I heard a version like that, but unfortunately he whispered his parts in a talking way which annoyed me. Definitely my second favorite phantom.... Combine that with Peter Kerrie's acting and you got an amazing phantom.
OMG! I knew he's the best Jekyll & Hyde I've ever heard, now you're telling me this guy can also play the Phantom?! He likes dark roles, I guess :p they really fit him!
Gilbert and Sullivan were actual people: Gilbert was a librettist, Sullivan a composer. They worked together on musicals like "The Mikado", "HMS Pinafore" and "Pirates of Penzance". G&S refers to their work collectively.
Warlow in the most recent Australian production of Phantom is definitely the best Phantom I have heard. He really took the part beyond what I'd heard or seen in any other recording or production. I assume that is what this recording is from?
@21gleneagles I agree we need an Australian version. I grew up listening to the Michael Crawford/Sarah Brightman recordings, so its hard to erase 16 years of music, to remember what the play sounded like.
i've never been a michael crawford fan. now this is not to disc him as many people in fact are, and he did originate the role. His voice just doesn't do it for me personally. anthony has been and always will be my favorite phantom.
I agree. His interpetation of Jekyll and Hyde is the best for me. in this he is amazing, but i kinda have a soft spot for Michael Crawford as phantom hehe, can't say andy is better than Crawford, but damn he's good :)
Hi, can anyone please find out the names of the main actors on the Phantom of the Opera at Her Majesty's theater in London on May 23 or 24, 2011? I need it for a friend of mine.
It isn't necessarily so. I think some people who saw Anthony Warlow or Michael Crawford perform might agree. For me, I don't find Michael Crawford sound that good in a recording while I like his live performances better, and when Anthony's voice is in good state he could sound even better than his studio recordings. And in the theatre you've got the live sound effect which makes some people's voice sound better.
This is a good version of 'Music' but Anthony's voice sounds better in a studio recording than live on stage. I'm not saying he can't sing...obviously he can but the best Phantom EVER is Michael Crawfor with the late great Rob Guest a close second.
@Joomington Whiney-voiced? Please! He's the only phantom that I've heard that doesn't have a really dark tone, and he doesn't use booming vibrato for every note. To me, at least, MC has the ability to sing soft (like an angel) and has the ability to sing loud and powerfully (like thunder). If you've heard of the book, those are the things that Erik can do with his voice. Plus, MC has such a unique and haunting voice, he fits the role of the Phantom perfectly. I respect you're opinion though.
