Sophia Medvid loves music and physics. As the first female Field Commander in the history of the Ohio University Marching 110, she leads by example on and off the field.
As an Engineering Physics major, she wants to know how things work. For her senior thesis project, she analyzed vibrations of the mellophone, one of the instruments she plays. She wanted to see if the vibrational modes significantly affect the sound coming from the mellophone. In what ways do the bell vibrations affect the sound? Her senior thesis project addresses this question.
Medvid’s physics lab precision and her research presentation led to an award of ‘Honorable Mention’ at the annual Society of Physics Undergraduate Research conference, sponsored by the Ohio University chapter of the Society of Physics Students.
She is a commanding presence at Ohio University in music and in science.
