Here's the story I got: Two friends- the fox and the bird- want to end the drought over the forest, so they go talk to the wise raccoon. The raccoon tells them of an ancient legend of spirits living at the top of the mountain and how the spirits could return the rain. To appease the spirits, you need four items: "skin of a limbless ghoul," aka the snake, "feather of a winged fool," aka the falcon, "tooth of a putrid brute," aka the crocodile, and a "claw of a murderous beast," aka the bear. As the journey goes on, they get the snakeskin, falcon feather, and bear claw. The last one is the crocodile tooth. Somehow during this encounter, the fox is killed. Even though the bird is devastated, it presses on, gets the tooth, and heads toward the mountain. After a close encounter with the bear, the bird successfully brings the items to the spirits, one of whom is now the fox. The spirits are appeased, the rain returns to the forest, and the story ends. TLDR: The drought will end if a snakeskin, falcon feather, bear claw, and crocodile tooth are brought to the mountain. The fox and the bird get the first 3 items, then the fox dies. The bird finishes the adventure without him. The end.

holy shit that's a great analysis. that sounds about right to me. i did catch that something happens to the fox, i think that's why the bird was so emotional. i guess then there isn't really a bad guy, more so just different challenges the fox and the bird faced
@mwep415
@mwep415 Год назад
Can I ask why you think it's the fox that died instead of the bird?
@zaneling8565
@zaneling8565 Год назад
@@mwep415 i guess it could go both ways... I think the fox died because earlier there was a song titled "The fox and the bird" and later there was a song titled "The bird." I assumed since the fox was removed from the title, he died. Good question though, I hadn't thought of the possibility that it was the bird who died...

@@zaneling8565 You could be right, but I think it's the bird that dies in The Bird, and The Mountain is about the fox struggling up the mountain on his own. However, I think the fox was also injured by the crocodile and also dies after completing the journey at the end of The Rain.

Although I mostly agree with your analysis, I have to disagree on 2 aspects: 1. In "The Bear", the two couldn't have gotten the claw, because if they did, then the bird would've flown away to the spirits, running away from the bear in "The Mountain". However, since he didn't and fought him head on, implies that their feud was not over yet, implying that they had yet to get the claw. (though, I suppose if one believes that the fox was the one who survived, then they could make the case that they couldn't escape the bear) 2. Imo, the way I interpret "The Rain", when the bird is saying: "But is it you I hear calling?", they do not mean that the fox is now one of the spirits, but that they can hear him calling from the afterlife, as the bird itself, wounded from the fight with the bear in the previous track, is dying.

That point in the Mountain where the fox remembers the Bird and gets that final bit of strength and the way she yells “RUN!” Fucking gets me.

The thing about the bear is, I don't think he's intentionally bad. I just think because the forest is burning, their access to food is dwindling so their hunger comes out in carnal and instinctual ways.

Yeah I agree I didn’t get the vibes that the bear was evil, more so that he’a desperate and trying to survive

I'm just so glad I can watch people who enjoy Casey's music as much as I do. I try and show my family and they all literally give a disinterested "Uh-huh. Yep." Which, is really disheartening. It's so nice to be able to watch people give the same reaction as I do. Especially to the Bird. God damn, Casey's singing is just beautiful.

I've been obsessed with this album! It was so worth the wait for new music from them (rambly comment incoming, sorry!) The way they're able to portray the story not just with the lyrics, but also through the instrumentals is SO cool. The Drought feels like the whole forest chanting to whatever spirit abandoned them, with that one guitar part sounding like the kind of cliche hawk or vulture cawing in the distance (to me at least). Then there's The Nightmare and all the other instances where the instrumentals are used like sound effects (the stick clicks at the start, the part that sounds like a piano literally falling over, etc). It's so creative. And I love how seamlessly The Raccoon (and the Myth) fades into The Journey. Like my first few listens through the album I literally wouldn't even notice the track change. It's like the Fox and Bird heard what they had to do and left without a second thought. That instrumental section in The Falcon feels like fast chase scene after the Falcon is like "you can have the feather if you can catch me," and the bird is just soaring through the air, weaving around trees and through caves, just trying so hard to catch him. The Snake isn't afraid of the death that the drought will bring and is almost taunting them, but in a completely different tone than the Falcon does. The Crocodile is so theatrical and I ADORE it. (Obsessed with the section that goes "Wait! Come back! I cherish every little angelic creature in the- WAIT! -a sec!"). And I agree that I don't think the Bear is 100% evil. More just desperate to survive to the point of selfishness. I like to imagine that with Casey singing the Bird/Fox's pov and Elizabeth singing the Bear's pov, the fact that they singing the first couple lyrics of the chorus are unison shows they want the same thing. "Spirits, please. The rain, will you return to us from the holy mountain." But then the bird/fox breaks off into "Stay with me together through the night. Together we survive" like they're trying to convince the Bear to help them. The Bear is "I, alone, survive" and doesn't trust anyone nor want to help them, and would rather fend for himself. If that makes sense. You can just FEEL the personality of each character through the music that portrays them! The instrumental section in The Mountain feels like that desperate fight to the top of the mountain as the angry spirits and foes they faced chase him down. I've seen some back and forth on whether it's the Bird or the Fox who survives and is the protag of that song, but personally I think it's the bird. That whole song gives me such a vivid image of the Bird approaching the mountain, then fighting through the wind and those foes and his own exhaustion. I think it's my favorite track tbh. I absolutely love that melody on the chorus sections like on "find my sight". Casey's vocals for the most part feel like it's singing the Bird's pov alone, but in those moments with the big chorus, it feels like it's the entire forest (and/or the Fox in spirit) calling out to the Bird to make it to the top and save them all. Then it all just melts into the final track, The Rain, which is just this calm, melancholy moment. I just picture it's the Bird laying at the top of the mountain, exhausted and relieved and heartbroken all at once, just quietly singing the words in case the Fox is somewhere listening as the rain finally starts to fall. The piano part reminds me a bit of Moon by Sleeping At Last as well! The songs vary so much but still manage to feel like they belong together, and to me the narrative is just so VIVID. It's so cool and has me wanting to make a narrative concept album someday myself tbh. Loved hearing your take on the album! Oh and sidenote: if "starving for a holy feast" sounds like a familiar phrase, their song Day & Night from Limbo uses that line as well! "Dear child, restless, gentle, soulless. Starving for a holy feast. Always on your knees, praying to dine in peace" (that song was my #1 on spotify wrapped 2021 so I loved hearing that line pop up). Sorry this comment is a bit scattered, this album just gives me so many thoughts lol

The "run, run, run now, as fast as you can" is a line from Big Metal Shoe, written by Jeff Williams (Casey's dad) for the RWBY Volume 6 soundtrack. I'd like to think it's Casey giving a subtle nod to her dad who brought her up in the music world ❤
@notquiteallison
@notquiteallison Год назад
you could be right, that she did it as a nod, but its important to remember that "Big Metal Shoe" is full of lines related to fairytales and nursery lines, with that line being one. So she could have done it as a nod to the rhyme, or as a nod to her dad. Or both!

Another thing that has been rolling around in my brain is the possibility that Elizabeth might be playing the croc in "The Mountain." The crocodile is the one who called the fox and bird "cowards" in its song. Also, the two places in the album where we hear rhythmic lyricism(instruments rhythmically matching what the singer is saying) is in "The Crocodile" and "The Mountain." The only things that would make me question this theory is the line "I can smell your fear" and the fact that a crocodile would be on a mountain.

Could the album be about Climate Change? Whatever it is,i t's the best album I've heard in awhile. p.s. Vermillion is a deep red colour.

I could totally understand it being a metaphor for climate change, and I’ll definitely add vermillion to my dictionary, it’s a great word!
