Music Producer Reacts To Angelina Jordan - I Put A Spell On You 

Thank you for featuring Angelina a second time, I hope you will do many more reactions to her, as she is well worth every nanosecond you spend on her. I have watched and listened to her in awe since she released her first video on RU-vid, and what has been evident to me from the start is that she sings with total conviction, despite the fact that she is far too young to have experienced the events suggested in the lyrics of the song she has chosen to sing. But it is not only that, for strange as it may seem is the even more remarkable fact that she can convey the appropriate emotions within those lyrics to her listener. Angelina was 9 years and 2 months old when she performed this song. It is her tribute to Screamin' Jay Hawkins, who wrote and performed the song in 1956 (50 years before Angelina was born). She based her arrangement on his original performance, although she discarded all the theatrics and allowed her voice and body language to tell the story. The song has been covered by many singers over the years, but to my knowledge, Angelina is the only one who has sung in the same style as the original. There are many things I found particularly worthy of note in this video. Some I recognised immediately and those I missed were brought to my attention by the more observant Angelina fans (her Angels) and I thank them for letting me know what I had missed. Another Angelina "Angel" has pointed out something else which I had missed, and it is added at (l) below, (a) Angelina finishing writing last minute changes she wanted and handing them to the Music Director, who smiled. (b) A brief glimpse of Mery Zamani, Angelina's maternal grandmother, a well known and respected Iranian Artist and poet who was also a child prodigy. She was the person who recognised Angelina's talent at an early age and exposed her to all the old time jazz singers. (c) The candle with an image of Screamin' Jay Hawkins on it. (d) The smile on the face of the Bass player. (e) How she rose on to her toes on the last occasion she sang "...because you're mine" (f) The fact she occasionally refers to her written notes on the music stand. Possibly to remind herself of the last minute changes she wanted. (g) Her unwavering passion throughout the performance. Evidenced by her facial expressions and the way she uses her hands and body to emphasise the direction of the song. (h) The way she takes a breath just before she starts the last phrase (I don't care.....) and that breath lasts the whole of that sustained note. A child of that age should not have the ability to hold a note for that length of time. (i) At the end, when she sings I Doooont Caaaaare, she employs TWO separate and distinct vibratos to the word care, a wide one to start the word and a tighter one to close the word (j) The instant transformation from "performance" mode to that of a pensive child, possibly wondering whether she could have done better. I comment on the "pensive" child because Angelina has an incredible work ethic and seeks to perform every song in a way she considers will bring out all the emotions within the lyrics and melody. (k) Perhaps the most remarkable is that despite her tender years, she sings with such total conviction that her authenticity is never in doubt. It is easy to believe that she has experienced the events described in the lyrics. It is not only her voice that is mesmerising, it is also her facial expressions, and the way she uses her hands and body. Her stage presence is electrifying. (l) The performance absolutely is powerful and raw but to me, I am amazed that this is balanced by the profound beauty of the ending phrase; the last twelve words of the song. AND… they are essentially sung a cappella! Angelina has been referred to as the "Queen of Jazz", "The Barefoot Princess", "The girl with a thousand voices". All of them are true, but I prefer the nickname I gave her after listening to about six of her performances. For me, she is "The Chameleon of Song", for as a chameleon is able to change its colour to match its surroundings, so Angelina is able to change the "colour" of her voice to accurately match the needs of the song to reveal the emotions within the lyrics and melody. Even more remarkable is her innate ability to communicate those same emotions to her listeners.

This was about a year and a half after she became Norway's youngest Author....

I love this performance so much. As they say AJ don't play. We get the most stunning, amazing performance of a 9 yr old of this Jazz standard ever created. I believe it is going to go down in Jazz & Music history as the best ever for this age and in my opinion the best rendition of this song ever created Screamin Jay included. It will be revisited for Decades and will remain relevant for Generations to come. Anyone who discovers this performance for the first time today or a 100 years from today are going to be as amazed and astounded as everybody has been to this point. Think of the children who will be inspired by this one performance in the decades to come. This is an Iconic performance and will always be Iconic. Angelina has on her own from early on at 6 or 7 yrs old reintroduced what I believe will be a whole new Jazz Era and redefined by this young phenom and prodigy. That is astounding! And she is just 17 years old... That is unfathomable. She has already established her proficiency and incredible work ethic in this endeavor guided by an incredible family and professional support now surrounding her. You just watched a Masterpiece! Destined to go down in Music History as the best performance by a 9 yr old, Period! Past, present & dare I say Future! I'd like to see anyone, young or old who can do a cover of this & with the justice it deserves as Angelina has done on every cover she does. ♥👣👸🏻

Everyone here has already let you know she was 9 years 2 months old and wrote the arraignment herself. This was not put on YT until after she turned 10 so the date is confused. At the start of the video we see Angelina writing her 'wishes' for how she wanted to sing the song. The musicians who worked with her called her "the boss". She was around her 9th birthday for this incredible arrangement and performance. We don't know why the video wasn't uploaded to RU-vid until about a year after it was recorded. I love to see Angelina reflecting about the performance at the very end of the video.

Angelina was 9 years old in this performance - This song was not arranged for her - she wrote the arrangement based on listening to the original Screamin' Jay Hawkins version - in fact, at the beginning of the video you see Angelina writing down some last-minute changes and it is read by the bandleader. Angelina Jordan (AJ) is known for her patience with others and her very good manners. She handed her arrangements to the band leader with the words "this are my wishes" but she was definitely the one calling the shots. Angelina does not come from a musical background. She was literally born to sing. There is video of her at 1-1/2 singing a few lines of I Will Always Love You. Her grandmother is a huge jazz fan and introduced jazz to Angelina at a very early age. At about 3 years old Angelina started studying jazz greats on RU-vid videos. Angelina has been arranging her own music since about age 8. The notes she is writing are apparently last minute changes that she wanted according to the musical director. She has been called the boss by this early band because she knows what she wants.

*Why Angelina always performs barefoot* At age 6, while traveling in the Middle East with her mother and grandmother, Angelina noticed a girl around her age standing on the side of the road, asking people to step on her bathroom scale to be weighed in hopes of getting some money. Angelina took off her shoes so as to not get the scale dirty and stepped on the scale many times to make the girl feel better. Angelina befriends the girl who was not wearing shoes and has scars on her feet, and learns she is an orphan. The orphan girl tells Angelina how beautiful she thinks her shoes are. Angelina says her shoes don’t fit her well and she wants to give her shoes to the orphan girl who thanks Angelina for giving her the shoes. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, “I want to become a doctor, but that will never happen since I have no parents and I have siblings so I have to do whatever is necessary for us to survive.” Angelina told the girl to never give up on her dreams. The poor girl asked Angelina what she wanted to be when she grew up and Angelina replied that she wanted to sing for the whole world. The poor girl said she would pray every day so Angelina’s dream would come true. Angelina still says she thinks of that homeless girl every day and has always performed barefoot to remind her of all the children who are less fortunate. I can answer the question you asked several times: how? The answer is Angelina is easily the best singer I’ve heard in my 70+ years. What you’ll find is that the difference between Angelina and terrific child singers like Angelina Hale is that Angelina just kills songs in multiple genres with the same authenticity you heard today. And she has grown as a vocal artist every year. Now at 17, her voice is full, rich, and mesmerizing. Her vocal tools and textures are limitless. There are dozens of songs that will leave you speechless, but if you want to understand how unique Angelina is, watch her AGT cover of Bohemian Rhapsody. It’s her own arrangement, and it’s the best live singing performance I’ve ever seen.

Not the last time you will have a hard time wrapping your head around how this was even possible. ….. but if you follow this up with another song from the same artist Screaming J Hawkins called‘Portrait of a man it kind of puts it into perspective. She started singing at the age of one year and a half and has been arranging her cover songs since she was 6 or 7 years old. Hi TYLR 👋. Great reaction to 9 Angelina. Her grandma Mery usually films these or produces them. But this was filmed by Heimly in 2015 and released it year later. That sometimes happens. Mery did film & produced Angelina's version of "Fly me to the moon Acoustic " when Angie was 9 on that too & releasedit a year later. By the way Angelina chooses her own songs and does all her own arrangements, even at this age. Angie is also known as the Angel with a 1000 voices. 😀👍❤

The amazing thing about AJ is that just when I think she can’t get any better, that she’s reached the peak of vocal prowess-she gets even better. But I admit I have a soft spot for her performances around age 9-12. There’s something truly magical about those. That doesn’t mean I’m not blown away by her more mature sound (am I really referring to a teenager as “mature??”); I’m eagerly awaiting her about to be released album.

Jazz is her native tongue learned while learning her native tongue. Her Grandma played jazz music all the time and AJ listened intently. AJ was found singing Whitney in her crib at 18 months old. By 2, she was walking around with a tablet picking out her own selections BTW, age 9 here, the video was released sometime after it was recorded.

Ive watched a new newbie freakout on this nearly everyday for at least three years and it never diminishes. Its such high quality that its a classic as soon as she sang it. Play it loud on good speakers in a big room

This is not a straight Screaming Jay Hawkins cover. Even at that age 9 she is listening to different versions and making her own arrangements. That is what the note is she is handing to the music director. A last minute change. 2 great songs at 10 showing even more growth are IM HOLDING OUT FOR YOU and FEELING GOOD

She regularly blows minds around the world with this video! You obviously know the original Screaming Jay Hawkins version so you an see how she has repackaged his unique performance into (dare I say it?) more musical arrangement yet without losing the original flavour and angst. And that......... is how the song was meant to be sung! Even including the original IMO. Screamin Jay Hawkins had originally intended to sing this as a ballad/love song, however on the night of recording he and the band got pretty drunk and the rest is history. The question is not what, the question is where in the world did she come up with this, because it was her, she arranged this herself, and it’s as much a theatrical performance as it is a singing performance. This is unbelievable to me still, but when you add that she did this when she was 9 It becomes totally incomprehensible. There are people who try all their lives and still cannot command their artistry at this level. You were thinking of Louis Armstrong, and yes, she listened to him and Ella Fitzgerald, and Billie Holiday, and many others from that era. No one else in her family is musical as far as I know, but her grandmother was a child prodigy herself in visual arts and poetry, and all the art, and a lot of the music videos, were made or produced by her grandmother.

Like you said,this is a incredible performance,coming from a 9 year old girl. Not only was she amazing on this cover,but,at this age,her not only having that voice,but,her not only understanding the difference nuances,but,performing them seamlessly. To further display her musical genius,her arrangement of this track,she took the studio version of the original version by Screaming Jay Hawkins,which is blues and put a jazz spin on it and with her vocals she made this iconic track more dynamic. To me,her version is my favorite,Angelina Jordan.

Angelina was 9y and 2 months when this was recorded but the video wasn’t posted until she was 10. I’ve read that the family was perhaps aware of how much attention it would get and they thought Angelina was too young. I’m not sure If that’s the true story but I’ve read it .

Often she changes the vowel, and/or doesn't finish the word, and I think the contrast of those with these full and finished words is why it catches my ear.

Her AGT Bohemian Rhapsody arrangement and performance was so good that Queen gave her the copyright for her arrangement! In the time between the video you just reviewed and AGT, Angelina did a lot of singing in Norway for both public fairs and private events (very popular at weddings I understand). There is a mountain of covers she published to YT over that time. Anything Angelina covers of Adele is especially wonderful (e.g. "Easy on Me" and "A million years ago"). Since she burst on the American scene big time with AGT, she has signed on to a record deal and is *very* close to releasing her first album so I am told! Others have already warned you about "going down the Angelina rabbit hole". It's true but falling down that hole is so much fun! Take care.

Great, exciting reaction! She's 9 here. This was the first song I ever heard by Angelina when I discovered her around December of 2019. She "put a spell on me," and I've been under it ever since! She's listened to and studied jazz literally since the age of three, so she is pretty much a six-year veteran by the time she produced this! Just mind-blowing! Her bare feet aren't just adorable. There is a very poignant and powerful reason why she never wears shoes when performing. She even wrote a book ("Between Two Hearts") about it at age nine, making her the youngest published author in Norway's history. It is a heart-melting true story!

She is the youngest published author in Norway. Angelina wrote and her Grandmother illustrated a book about why she sings barefoot. She was on a trip to Iran where her grandmother is from and met a street girl weighing people for money. Angelina sat and talked with the girl. Angelina asked the girl what she wanted to be when she grew up and the girl replied, a doctor but that it could never happen. Angelina told her to never give up hope. The girl complimented Angelina on her shoes and Angelina noticed her scarred bare feet so she gave them to her, and the little girl told Angelina she would pray for her every day. Angelina sings barefoot to this day to remind herself (and the world) that there are still children in need. All book proceeds go to charity.

I have listened to this masterpiece by Angelina hundreds of times, mostly to enjoy new reactions, like yours to this very lovely and talented person. She was nine here, and as you know, is seventeen now and soon to be Republic's main star talent. And yes, I know they also have Taylor Swift, but Taylor wasn't this amazing at such a young age. I will frequently come back to these early beginning performances of Angelina, age six thru nine, for the pleasure of falling in love with her all over again. I think you were referring to Louie Armstrong's gravelly voice. She does a great Etta James 'I'd Rather Go Blind' cover too.

That band is her own hired when she was 8 after her win on Norway's Got Talent. The band members call her "Boss," not just because she is their boss but because they realized they are the band of the greatest female vocalist to ever live. This band is in Norway. She also hired two male guitarists to accompany her on many of her covers. Words do not describe Angelina. She is one of a kind, born to sing. You will learn her story here from us Angels. She is the real thing. Her grandma had everything to do with her early affection for jazz along with records and RU-vid. Many describe her as an old soul in a young body.

It's like saying my 2 year old child got up and started walking all of a sudden or at 3 years of age my child just started eating with a fork. What I mean is, it's almost not human like. She knows Jazz that no other singer on the planet knows that much at 10 years of age. She's the best in history in my opinion and in my books. No one at this age was this good in history. Period

As soon as she finishes watch her face go from possessed to 1 2 3 , blink 2 times to relaxed little girl. She has so much emotion and raw talent that she draws us all in. We all know she possesses our hearts yet it's so hard to explain. Her music makes us feel like we're front and center at her concert.

She is not 10 here, she is at the ripe old age of 9 years and 2 months. Why is she barefoot? There is an incredible and priceless story behind that. Look it up (or better yet, look through the comments, someone is bound to recite the story in one of the comments). Furthermore, this is only one of many genres of music she excels at. The girl of a thousand voices is sometimes used to describe her - as you will find when you deeper into the nice, warm and cozy Angelina rabbit-hole.

Even more amazing, this is her own musical arrangement to this 1956 classic from Screaming Jay Hawkins , that is why she seems to be directing the music with that pencil in her hand at the beginning. She is the only one with a version whom has kept this song in character of Jay Hawkins's original from 1956. Also at the end when the band stops and she does the ending , not many have commented on her insertion of that Eastern Iranian rift as the raises her right and circles with her raised finger and sings 'If you don't want me' , that is from her Iranian heritage. If you go look at the original Screaming Jay Hawkins in 1956 you will understand where and why AJ rewrite and rearranged to lyrics, and also nowhere all the screams growls, and styles are coming out of A 9year old,,, she did her own studying him and this was her arraignment and also the hand written Wishes for how she wanted the band to react in pointed areas.. the Band loved her such they started calling her "The Boss" and many of the band members went on to play for her at other events

The singer I believe you were referring to around the 7 minute mark was Louis Armstrong, the Great Satchmo which I’ve read that he was one of the greats that gave Angelina inspiration for the way she sings.

Genius is exactly the right word! She was actually 9 years and 2 months when this was recorded. It was almost a year later it was posted to RU-vid.

She was nine and she writes all of her own arrangements! She makes her own clothing! She studied all the old jazz recording artists instead of playing with toys and dolls!

Her grandmother Mery Zamani exposed her to the great legendary jazz singers from the bygone era on RU-vid. AJ fell in love with them and began studying and emulating all of their techniques from her tablet at a very young age. 🗣 Subscribed! 🖐🤓🍿
