Music Producer Reacts to Aphelios, The Weapon of the Faithful | Champion Theme - League of Legends

Design wise and lore wise, Aphelios is brilliantly written, every theme fits the champion well. Riot is simply supreme in making music.

Just to explain Aphelios' lore: Aphelios & his twin sister Alune (the ghost) are part of a hidden lunar tribe. While Alune had a strong spiritual connection to the moon, Aphelios was an extremly skilled warrior. They were waiting in a temple for an event to happen so there could be a connection to the spirit realm, so their tribe would gain its power again, but they were attacked by the Solari warriors. Aphelios drank of a flower, its poison would mute Aphelios in pain, but he'd gain strenght to fight the Solari warriors. To safe the tribe Alune went to the spirit realm, the portal closed and she was "trapped" there, while Aphelios is in the real world. Alune's strong connection to Aphelios grants her power to communicate to her brother when he's poisoned & she's the one granting him holy lunar weapons. In game, you never hear Aphelios's voice, it's always Alune talking, so that's why the theme is sang by a female vocalist, singing as Alune, talking to Aphelios. "Just have faith in me." and "You're never alone." have a special meaning when you know the lore. :D [Lore explanation might me slightly off and wonky, because I don't remember it exactly.] Edit: Basically, in Runeterra there are two parties one who prays to the sun and the other one to the moon and obviously they fight. Religion fight yadda yadda. So, neither Aphelios nor Alune are really bad people, they're just faithfully religious and wanted to protect their people from being slaughtered by the Solari people.

Maybe a hot take but I truly believe Riot's music production team should be nominated for a grammy or something. They have been making such amazing music for years now, like being real master pieces.

Easter egg in this song is that Alune (his sister) is the one singing this since Aphelios can't speak and Aphelios (allegedly) briefly sings with her in the line "I'm with you".

The fact Aphelios IS the strings is what makes it so epic. As he can't speak, it becomes a nice duet with his sister.

Here we goooo Aphelios has the same energy of a stressed college student who's shouldering a lot of expectations and burdens after his sister died and he's constantly stepping into legos and is trying not to scream. but in a League world where he's an assassin instead of a college student while his sister isn't really dead but she's whispering weird shit at him all the while giving him weapons

I like to think that the “drowned” effect on the chords is given by Aphelios being mute and struggling inside, with her sister’s voice being the only source of relief and tranquility amidst the chaos going inside of him

Aphelios is a mute and his sister (the spirit looking character behind him) often talks to him in-game about always being with him n so on :) So the music flow accompanying the vocals really is beautiful like you said. Didn't realize that before haha. And yea he is a really edgy kinda character xD

At this point, it's well understood that the folks over at Riot are better storytellers and music writers than they are game designers. Their champion themes and cinematics are always top-notch.

His vocals are his ethereal sister who speaks to him. The weirdness comes because he drinks a psychedelic that crisps his senses before he goes full assassin mode but it closes his vocal cords. She’s the only sanity guiding his faith. He does the dirty work for basically the Church of the Moon.

Mans really be able to tell that Aphelios is 200 years even from his champion themes. Insane how that works huh Riot?

I really like how you interpret the song with the character. In the lore, Aphelios is a mute from a civilization called Lunari, he has a sister (Alune) that is kinda like a lunar prist. The lunari worship the moon while the Solari (their enemies) worship the Sun. These two civilizations are constantly in war. To fight them, Aphelios drinks a poison from a flower that allows him to hear his sister. She would send him a variety of lunar weapons and stuff to protect her brother and the Lunari, There's a short story that mentions the Solari entering a Lunari cave and Aphelios fights them with the help of his sister. That cave interpretation 8:10 was pretty accurate. The same with 4:30, representing the constant war. It also makes sense that the singer is a female, representing Alune. Maybe I skipped something but that's pretty much it

The cello part at the "I'm with you" always give me chills. They may be separated, he may be mute, but they'll always be connected. Also, I would highly suggest Fiddlesticks and Camille as themes to react to :)

No one talks about Setts theme, is really nice too, well... Every theme fits its champion...

Damn, finally my main character's song is being reacted, i got crazy when finally i saw it on my frontpage!! Joey, to make u understand a little more this AWESOME/AMAZING guy: There are 2 religions/cults, the Solari (loves the sun and hates the moon, basically) and the Lunari (Accepts the moon (basically) ) and Aphelios belongs to the moon religion. The Solari are the "bad guys" of the story, because they got rid of the other ones and hate them (for literally just accepting the moon), ending up making Lunari hiding theirselves for a long time. But Aphelios is the one that will meet an important person in the future and together they will restore peace between both religions and make them live in peace (that's what is supposed to happen, we don't know yet). So yeah, not as u said: aphelios is not the bad guy/villain. (he's mute btw, her sister's spirit speaks for him) PS: not every Solari are bad people, there are also a few ones with the same objective: peace. I hope u understand something! Fiddlesticks theme Is a masterpiece

Alune is the voice and aphelios is the deep muted bass and strings. Everytime Alune finishes her prayer or verse, aphelios comes in a drowns everything out because it's sort of like alune is just hidden in the background watching over aphelios.

You don't know how long I've waited for you to react this.

Aphelios is a Lunari (worship the Moon) and they were chased and killed by Solari (worship to the Sun) for centuries. Now he and his sister, who is in the spirit realm act together to revenge. They are assassins, but for that, the sister Alune in the spirit realm gives him all the weapons and power, and for Aphelios to connect to her, he must drink a poison, which keeps him mute and in pain! That's why you can only hear her voice saying to stay together and that's why it sounds so dark but at some time optimism! #EmoMoonBoy

Please, do kindred, please; or bard, or anyone really, champions themes are so well made

I find it amazing how you can pick up traits of a champion just by listening to their login screen! I would suggest Pyke's Login Screen if you want to make another LoL login screen video, it's really good.

ye, the dude drinks some poison that makes it impossible for him to be able to speak. Said poison allows him to connect with his dead/spirit form sister, who helps him fight. In game you can only hear her voice and he just groans when he gets hit or dies, so the lovely voice accompanying the creepy base is most likely what they were going for

The fact that the instrumental backed the vocals so well( since Alune is the singer and Aphelios represents the instruments ) shows how Riot really puts a lot of great effort in implementing their character into music.

Look into the live recording of Pyke’s theme, the strings in that video blow me away every time

Many themes have voices, like Kayle and Morgana (my favorite) or pantheon having choral singing to add to the feeling of their music, but very few have actual lyrics. Volibear and Ornn (both very good themes) have lyrics because their songs are their legends since their demigods. Fiddlesticks' is a children's song warning about him, and Aphelios has his twin sister Alune singing to him from the spirit world through their connection, and Seraphine has lyrics because she's a singer. Those are the only ones I can think of with words, usually they don't. Edit:forgot about diana. Not sure why hers has lyrics.

Might be too late for you to see this comment, BUT, I just want to say I'm so happy to see someone actually doing some champion theme reactions. People stick to the big songs, and I get why, but they capture champions so so well too. Sett is another really great one.

I'd love it if you checked out the 2019 Lunar Revel Theme. It's not a champion theme, it's an event theme, but it shows that Riots Music team can pull off any style. Also, it's just really fucking good

This is the first time im hearing this champion theme but the music kind of makes sense. Aphelios can be represented by the dark and strong bass sounds while Alune is a light melodic guidance for him which you can kinda hear in the way the synth and bass follows her voice. Maybe i'm lookin way too deep but i feel like there was a lot of decisions made for this music. At the very least there's two very distinct parts to this.
