At the time this was in the charts there was a battle going on between slade and wizard to see who would make it to the Christmas no.1 spot. Slade won with Wizzard's I wish it could be Christmas everyday at no.2 both are now deeply embedded in British Christmas culture, musically.

Yep, remember it well. Although I was bonkers about Slade at the time, I always thought the Wizard song was better but there’s no doubt Slade’s hastily penned Xmas tune was amazingly popular and has stood the test of time. I even remember singing this at Reading Festival on an August Bank Holiday weekend back in the early 80s when they stole the show. Of all the Christmas songs I think Greg Lakes ‘I believe in Father Christmas is my favourite of all time.

I was a child in the 70's and 80's and grew up with this song each Christmas. It takes me straight back to those old Christmases, and sounds so nostalgic and Christmassy to me. And as for the "It's Chriiiiiiiistmaaaaaaas!" scream... that's *exactly* what every child (from a family that celebrates Christmas) thinks when they wake up Christmas morning, isn't it?

Slade stood in when Ozzy Osbourne pulled out of Reading Festival 1980. The set went down a storm and they got loads of shouts to play this song, which made Noddy laugh as it was the middle of summer. Got the 30,000 fans to sing it instead. That show pretty much resurrected their career again.

Slade were one of those quintissential British bands. Noddy Holder (Singer) & Jim Lea(Bassist, although he played many instruments on other songs) wrote the songs, Dave Hill (lead guitar), wore outrageous outfits, the outfit in this clip was seriously understated for him. Don Powell on drums, kept it all together.

A friend of mine, who is a prominent journalist, tells the story of a Xmas celeb party he was at which Noddy Holder (raucous voiced lead singer) also attended. All night people were trying to get Noddy to do his trademark "It's CHRISTM-A-A-A-A-S!!!" which he was reluctant to do. At the end, when plenty of wine had been drunk, suddenly there was the loudest shout you had ever heard. So loud that everyone instinctively ducked or hid under the nearest table.

The Christmas season in the UK doesn't start until you hear Slade blasting from the radio. As others have said please do Wizard - I Wish It Could Be Christmas Every Day. It has also become a 'traditional' Xmas song along with John Lennon's 'So This is Christmas'. The 70s was great for new now traditional songs and I'm probably a wee bit biased as that was my teens and you know the impact these songs have, they always leave a mark. Wishing you and your family a warm, loving, Merry Xmas.

I just love the happy look on your face whilst listening to this. That was the general effect had on people. They did do some good emotional songs but for the most part they were renowned for real feel-good songs (‘Cum On Feel The Noise’ and ‘Mama Weer All Crazee Now’ being good examples) and Noddy Holder has said that they were often booked on Top Of The Pops as an opening act because they were guaranteed to get the audience woken up and on the right mood. In the 1970s in Britain a party hadn’t truly begun until someone put Slade on the record player. In 1983 Slade had another Christmas hit when ‘My Oh My’ made it to number 2 in the U.K. charts at Christmas. Although the song isn’t about Christmas it’s still a corker and worth a listen. Thanks for another great reaction.

Slade were huge in the UK during the early 70's. So, their Christmas song for 1973 was almost guaranteed to get to the top spot. And it did. Played every single year ever since. That was a, 'Top Of The Pops', performance, which meant they had to mime in accordance to the BBC musicians' union! Any live performances had to have the official orchestra, (or sections of), perform any songs, and as most bands didn't want their latest singles played by part of an orchestra, they choose to mime instead. There's a few singers/solo artists who chose to have the orchestra do the instrumental part of their songs, but some of them just weren't suited to it. Anyways, the song in question has become part of the British institution and never fails to be heard every December. The fashions of the time were basically the expected garb of a, 'pop/rock star.' Glam rock in particular meant having shiny/glittery clothing and large platform shoes. Slade were renowned for their dress sense, in particular Dave Hill, who really hammed it up with every performance on TOTPs.

Slade and Wizzard's Christmas songs are joyous celebrations of the season - both big rock anthems which have become as much a part of Christmas tradition in the UK as trees, holly and tinsel. Slade as a band were Glam Rock but all about athems which people could pick up and sing along - they were highly successful in the UK, were the first act to get three songs debut at #1 in the charts, and had 17 consecutive top 20 hits in the early 70's. They notoriously had absolutely no fashion sense whatsoever - which kind of added to their popular appeal - and lead singer, Noddy Holder, is regarded as one of the great voices of Rock history. EDIT: Oh, and Vic Reeves and Bob Mortimer did a great parody of them which you might want to check out.

This was Slade's final number one in the UK (in a run of ten singles during 1971-73, six made the top spot) and was recorded in New York in July '73 during a US tour. The chorus was on based a song that singer Noddy Holder had written in 1967 called "Buy Me a Rocking Chair". Bassist Jimmy Lea remembered it and added it to the melody he'd come up with for the verses. Drummer Don Powell had been in a car crash 10 weeks before they recorded it and was in a coma for a week (sadly his girlfriend was killed). He suffered from memory problems afterwards but recovered enough to play on the track. Noddy Holder has pointed out that there's nothing in the music that says "Christmas" - it's all in the lyrics.

It has been played at ALMOST every Christmas party since it was released in the 70's. So I think it's VERY popular.

When he shouts 'it's christmas' the group were in New York, in summer, and to get the right sound it was screamed up a lift shaft.

quintessential (and possibly only) English working class Christmas song - no church, no choir, no chimes - just family and the fun and delight of coming together - gets me every time

Definitely in the top three on the list of all time great Christmas songs. Jona Lewie's Stop the Cavalry and The Pogues' Fairytail of New York being the other two. You should have a listen to some of the Slade back catalogue too.
