Music Teacher Reacts: NEMOPHILA - Revive (日本のバンドの反応) 

Mayu is the vocalist. Tamu is the drummer, whose drum set is Tama Silverstar (Jet Blue Burtst) with the S.L.P. series snare (chestnut) and Meinl cymbals. Haraguchi is the bassist and she played Bacchus Universe BJB5-700 5 string Jazz Bass with some custom modifications in earlier videos. Her new one is Sadowsky Metroline RV5 5 String Bass (TRD/W. Pearl). She seems to be partial to using Ampeg equipment as far as amps and speaker cabinets are concerned. I noticed two set-ups: SVT-CL+SVT-810E and SVT-3PRO+SVT-410HLF(?) Hazuki is now recognized by Ibanez as one of their artists. I have seen two of their guitars in her hands so far. These models are: IBANEZ RGDR4327-NTF and slightly customized Ibanez j.custom RG8527Z. There were also three ESP guitars. One of these was a 7-string guitar - ESP M-Seven Original Series Titan Metal. And two basically identical (except for color) 6-string ESP guitars in customized configuration (or, at least, I was unable to find any other ESP guitars that look like them). She uses Kemper Profiling Rack amp (+Roland GFC-50 MIDI Foot Controller)+Marshall DSL40C; Marshall 2551AV; MARSHALL 1960A. She also works together with child guitar-playing prodigy Li-sa-X. Saki is the other guitarist and she plays Killer guitars exclusively. I have seen four of them so far. Currently, it is her signature model that gets all of the love - KG-Fascinator Seven the Empress. You can also often see her playing a significantly modified KG-Fascist Vice Seven model (different colors, different pickups, an added pickguard with a customized design), or, at least, that is I think it is, to be fair. The other two are modified KG-Prime original 2015 (with a different neck and red active EMG pickups; colors) and modified KG-Fascist Grave Stone (EMG active pickups and different paintjob). She uses AXE-FX III Fractal (+MFC-101) combined with Marshall Custom Shop Tattoo Range Emily Wood JVM410H & 1960A Stack Bundle

All of the ladies do back-up vocals, sometimes all of them, sometimes just one or two. Bassist Haraguchi-san also does some vocal leads.

Oh yes, they all sing, and various members will harmonize with MAYU on different songs to mix/match for different vocal styles depending on the song. SAKI and HAZUKI are top-tier twin leads and will trade solos and come together in harmony like that a lot. TAMU on drums is one of, if not thee, top rated female drummer in Japan (and that is saying quite a lot). And the bassist HARAGUCHI-SAN is an Ace too. She was rock solid perfect on their live in-person concert they streamed earlier this month. The convergence of talent in this band is mind blowing. Saki with the Killer guitar even plays in the great band Marys Blood. They are going to do a concert and then the band goes to hiatus. Think Saki want to get some energy in Nemophila for the moment 'couse this band is climbing as a rocket for the moment!

This band, besides all the other things you already know by other posts, are really FUN This band do a lot of covers, but from X-Japan to "The Minions". Every one with their own style and again, really fun to see.

Seems like these were mostly covered in other comments, my own points stressed here. Killer guitars is the line by Loudness guitarist Akira. Guitarist Saki is very well connected, very successful at bringing to the masses what westerners would call eclectic but Japanese would call pop oriented songs, whether shred, metalcore, truly pop, traditional instruments, etc (a la BabyMetal, and ubiquitous powermetal behind-the-scenes guy Mao). She’s been in a ton of bands: Destrose [spawned Mary’s Blood, Lovebites, Octaviagrace, Disqualia, Mardelas, FateGear, Ibuki(with her own list), and many more], Mixx (maid outfits 3yrs before BandMaid), Mary’s Blood (14yr old band, she’s been key the last 10, they are planning final shows in a few months), world guitar girls collection [her concept, do long medleys of classic pop/rock/metal/guitar oriented songs (Santana deep purple eagles nightranger Metallica, B’z, manymore) using ~5 at a time leading female shredders, originally supported by Naon no Yaon festival & its producers in the band ShowYa, her mentor & label(owner?mate?)], Amahiru (with members of Dragonforce/Kreator, Epica, FearFactory), and now Nemophila. Drummer MurataTamu (sound of drums) is her own force, see solo album Innocent, or collabs w ladyBaby, or with DaisukeKurosawa, sings, plays keys, sax, xylophone, bass, etc I though “haraguchisan” (she calls herself), was just happy to be here at first, but she’s cofounder with singer, and wrote Indian inspired Hypnosis (see MV). Mayu’s got a unique scream-meets-high-growl, fry but more, vox coaches can’t figure her out. Definitely heavily layered, and perhaps thin in some ranges, but daring to say the least. And the whole band can sing as seen in other parts of other songs, octaves, harmonies, gang style… But what you heard is common for them, doubled screams, maybe a clean or an octave, all her. I wish she didn’t need/use tracks. BUT she does NOT (generally) rely on effects for the vox distortion. “baby bad” Hazuki is my fav secret weapon. Brought in last by Saki, she’s now been the co-lead for three of JFeMetal’s best: Narumi [see EP the Seed, filled in for Aldious, from Destrose; w Hazuki in Disqualia, backing LisaX, backing Rami (former Aldious singer)], and currently with new material from both Nemophila And LisaX Band. Strongly recommend LisaX Band, even tho they only have 4songs completed & released; MVs for all 4. Try the first (of2) single’s A-side One More Chance is Enough. Yes, it’s shreddy, but be ready for Incredibly good soulful vocalist Rina and her positive (&95% English) lyrics. You may have heard of famous guest drummer Shane Gaalaas and Uber-famous guest bassist Billy Sheehan, both currently of The B’z. Don’t try counting it out tho, as pop as it is, the progginess has been hurting my brain for years now (love it!). And Again, the connection is that prodigy virtuoso LisaX, writer Narumi, and worlds best rhythm section needed someone who could keep up, so they got Hazuki! Muratu Tamu has been working with TAMA drums for many years. You can find videos of her doing TAMA drum clinics and factory tours on YT. She also plays keyboards and sings. I think she has broad genre interest, but her peak is probably prog.

Nice reaction. Nemophila have one of the most fun performances to see in nowdays. Talking in guitar solos I want to suggest another great japanese band called Lovebites, their two guitarrists are amazing and in fact the whole band is. The song that I choose is "Set the world on fire". Cheers!!!

Tamu the drummer sings the song Breaking Out. But yes they all sing. Great band. My favorite album last year. Hazuki is playing the blue Ibanez, Saki is the other guitarist. Ai Murata loves Dream Theater, Opeth. Michael Portnoy, Dave Lombardo a few of her influences. She plays Tama drums, and just showed a new set in their live performance at the Zepp, with fans, and live streamed. Nemophila has raised to the top of my favorite bands. A great song you may like is Hypnosis, written by Bassist Haraguchi San. Raitei, is another banger. Life a beautiful ballad, with Mayu showing beautiful vocals. And the guitars cry out.

My favorite video remains the studio demo of of the brutal, yet melodic Oiran ( ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-eyb2NtPwcxc.html ), but you will see a different aspects of the band, and especially Mayu, in Monsters (with a great, spooky breakdown), Life (a touching ballad), and Hypnosis (a mesmerizing groove). Especially fun are their covers of other Japanese bands that inspired them like Show-Ya, X-Japan, Kishidan, and MAXIMUM THE HORMONE. After all that, you might be surprised by the delightful Pop side of Mayu on Don’t Say Lazy and Make You Happy. Mayu’s charm is especially evident in their appearance on Rock Fujiyama, where Marty Freedman gives English pronunciation lessons to Mayu and plays guitar with Saki. I love this band already, and they don't have much material out yet. Normally, the growl thing isn't for me, but in this case it most definitely is. I just like that she screams like a GIRL, instead of a fake sounding lower sound.

Nemophila is one of the best bands out there right now. You can't go wrong with any song from these ladies

As a bass player, Haraguchi-san is someone I watch. Some songs she picks, some songs she plucks; she is just so solid with technique. Always smile at her red Sadowsky. Last year Sadowsky announced they were discontinuing MIJ basses and only what was in stock was left, and next thing you know Haraguchi-san rocked a red one.

The location is Meiji Centenial observation tower in Futtsu Park Chiba Prefecture built in 1971. It is located in the South-east corner of Tokyo Bay. I feel for the gear guys that had to lug all their equipment up all these stairs!

I think the question of what they put in the food of the musicians over there in Japan is getting more and more serious, isn't it? :) Some will probably stone me for the comparison, but I do recognize some parallels to other bands, such as one that performs in maid costumes, even aside from the obvious that they are 5 young ladies. The level of talent, the versatility and that they have a hell of a lot of fun doing what they do... What Band-Maid is for the hard rock genre, Nemophila is from my point of view for the heavier type of music. They are more than just a breath of fresh air. Oh Boy! If you like guitar solo you're in for a treat! They do them in almost every song :D The main vocalist is Mayu, but any of the other 4 can sing, so they switch who harmonize with her and sometimes multiple girls do backing vocals! But I'm not sure who does it in this song. As for next songs to hear, their most reacted one is by far "Dissension"! But I prefer "Hypnosis" and "Raitei" that have a little bit less screaming xD They were founded in 2019 but just released their first studio album!

Looks like the boys and girls got here well before me LOL .Been following this band since the start 2 and a bit years ago they are the best new band out now and the hardest working .Also realy nice people funny and extremely talented and humble with it .5 string Bass and two 7 string guitars (guitarist my self) with a world class drummer and one of the best new front singers going she can sing any thing and owns the stage .Live there monsters LOL. Just put out there first full album (independent band) sent it to be mastered by Jens Bogren From Sweden (Arch Enemy ,Opeth. Sepultura and many more to his name )They mean business .As a guitarist you are going to love Nemophila because Saki and Hazuki are at the very top Saki being goddess level in japan .After 2 years they have a international fan base and a very successful YT channel + quite a few live shows albeit mostly live on the internet concerts no fans there .they just did a Live in japan with fans that sold out immediately.Nice to see a reactor that knows music more Nemo please they never disappoint.

That location has been used several times in music videos for different artists. For example in the video for Tonight by Passcode.

This song.... would be a good introduction to Nemophila, albeit an unusual one. Most people start with their earlier works like Oiran or Dissension. Please, carry on your explorative journey into this band's work! We're absolutely good with that 😜

Technically speaking this band is a side project for most of these girls... at least by now. All five girls can sing... but I think the growling parts have some layering, couttesy of Mayu (The singer) I love her voice.😉
