@@nomadine85 There’s a few articles online that say she took time in the pandemic to learn how to engineer more during the pandemic. Not sure exactly which article mentions it though.
Finneas said somewhere that all producers today have the same equipment, so he tries intentionally to take unusual roads when he works on the songs, to make them stand out. There's the technical with the mix of effects and his multi layered sound. But also his use of samples of everyday sounds, he or Billie have recorded with their phones. Despite their heavy use of eletronics, it's all songs that can be stripped completely down and performed just backed by a acoustic guitar or a piano.
I really enjoy acoustic/stripped-down versions of Billie's songs, like her own acoustic version of "Copycat", & James Blake's & Cub Sport's piano-based covers of "When the Party's Over"...
I think the snake is also supposed to be symbolic, like how you can call a duplicitous a**hole a snake 🐍. It's a predator, slithering all over her, surrounding her, waiting to strike...
@Sandy Gan Agreed with this interpretation, the snake in the video isn't a cobra (which strikes swift and suddenly), it's a constrictor, which does essentially what it does to Billie in the video, slowly wraps around it's prey completely and then squeezes the life out of it, very appropriately metaphorical for the themes of abuse and betrayal the song deals with.
Absolutely love the comping at the end, as a bar-band level guitar player; I do however have to hate ya!! :) Oh, I am 70-years old and Billie has restored my interest in new music. Watching her grow as an artist musically and visually is fascinating and inspiring.
I love the music, the future marriage advice and the powerful message to ponder on "power". I never listened to Billie until now. I appreciate the great music :)
Yes. You hear A MILLISECOND and you know it’s her... and one immediately melts. It’s like that first hit of the softest chocolate or a drop of water after a drought. It’s so soothing
Always enjoy your reactions. She has said repeatedly that she wants people to see the many situations where the abuse of power occurs. This morning in a radio interview she specifically said this song does not apply to the person many people are talking about.
Billy’s said before that one of her big influences was Aurora. Should check her out, too. Specifically: ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-CFzExUN1N8I.html
Nope, it’s not about any specific relationship. You kind of glossed over the line in which she sings “you said you thought she was your age” just before “how dare you” - and earlier in the song she sings “she was sleeping in your clothes, but now she’s got to get to class” again, just before “how dare you”. She’s said in interviews that it’s about the abuse of power especially over underaged girls, that all of us have either experienced or witnessed. There’s an element of personal experience, sure, but it’s not about anything the public knows, she was quite adamant about that, so although it seems like the age gap in her publicised previous relationship (seen in her documentary) could be somewhat implied to some subliminal extent, she has directly said that it’s not about him, and for people to focus on the message overall rather than try to unearth some celebrity gossip. Which I was definitely guilty of, as well, especially at first.
@Sandy Gan Yes! I thought so as well, but then I remembered that while she didn’t go to school she did have dance classes, for example, or areal, choir, horse riding etc. That’s why I didn’t include it (though I might be overthinking this haha) but I agree, and I did think of that! Thank you for the addition ☺️
Just found your Channel and I’ve been binge watching all the dgd vids! Love your enthusiasm to every band you react to! Another band that I think would be cool to react to would be normandie! I think You’d like them! Anyway, keep up the good work!
So let's talk about the snake. It's CGI, of course, so no snakes were harmed for the making of this video. But taking a deeper look, that's actually an anaconda. I feel the type of snake is important here, because anacondas are some of the only snakes that can actually present a danger to people who live in the same areas, particularly elderly and children. Vulnerable people. They typically incapacitate their prey via squeezing them until they can't move anymore, and then swallowing them whole. The song is about an ex, but it's also about other people Billie has empathized with, people who have been taken advantage of by someone more powerful than them, someone who abused their power. To me, the snake isn't just a generic "Bad abusers = snakes because snakes are bad" thing, this is about literally being CONSUMED by someone predatory, having the life squeezed out of you and then being devoured for their own purposes. I also think there's some intentional irony going on here. For a long time snakes in music videos have been about sex and sexuality. If a female singer is pictured with a snake it's often supposed to represent that kind of 'naughty'-ness and show a lot of skin. Billie turned that on its head by using it here to represent fear, abuse, and danger, without changing much of the context visually. I'm a huge snake fan and I dislike anything that demonizes them, but as far as snakes in music videos go, this is a really good one.
@@apoorvdubey6425 Parts of it are absolutely CGI. Some shots are real, but the ones wrapping around her are CGI and you and see that they are because there are behind the scenes shots where she's being "squeezed" but has no snake.
Snake was real. There's pictures of her and Archie (snakes name) "cuddling" in the trailer. I can't imagine anyone letting the snake wrap around her without thinking of her being strangled. It looks pretty real bc the shirt crinkles as it passes. How does ur kids feel about getting a pet snake?
I actually really love this song being more acoustic than most of her previous songs, it just adds that much more to her voice as a stand alone. Purely amazing. Love the review as always! If you get a chance please check out Faouzia - "How it all works out (stripped)" version Or her song "Elon" stripped: live in concert starting at 23m09
Hey David! You need to review Maynard James Keenan's other projects! Judith by A Perfect Circle. Momma Sed/Dozo by Puscifer. Totally different takes on his musical journey.
I don't know if you take requests or not, but I suggest a band called Wolf & Bear, either songs "Street Rat" or "Scorched Shore." They're signed under Dance Gavin Dance's Will Swan and DGD's Bassist plays for Wolf and Bear.
@@MusicShed Parts are a real snake, his name is Archie, but many believe the part where it is wrapping around her neck had to be cgi for safety reasons.
People say that presenters on youtube and facebook aren't honest. I think they must not watch a lot of them. If David isn't being honest, he's fooled me completely.
We need a reaction to some Linkin park songs!! Like given up (preferably live), Qwerty (live in Tokyo), crawling (one more light live) or one more light! :D
The snake was real, not post production. That's pretty standard for her videos too, She rarely uses CGI in anything. I'm not sure where they are getting these pics. something about instagram story, but that must be a part of instagram i can't get to, because on her normal instagram page I don't see these. either way, i wonder if they put something hard around her neck to keep the snake from accidentally strangling her. ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-h-jnVyvt060.html
You might get tired of Dance Gavin Dance suggestions while I’m subscribed but Turn Off The Lights, I’m Watching Back to the Future Pt 2 You will NOT regret listening to the arrangement.
Thanks for posting! If you have a minute, I tried my hand at a cover of The Neighbourhood. As a fellow music lover, I'd love if you'd take a listen. It's on my page. Hope you enjoy!
I’ve always been open minded, except for my college years when I was blinded by jazz - young and snobby. This channel has been a blessing for me to become aware of newer bands.
