@@MusicShed by being inhumanly talented. I appreciate that you're an educator, but I was in jazz band in high school with kids who practiced 5 hours a day. They weren't JD Beck. Maybe JD didn't go to high school and stayed home and practiced 12 hours a day; I don't know.

@@mikemorenilla7444 I can agree to a point..I don't think I can ever have developed these sorts natural abilities..I think some are just born with it,, like eye color or skin tone.. I could practice 24 hours and not get that good in my life time..I might fake it good though.. anyway the educator here is just trying to encourage people. and you will never know untill you try..and beside that you can find a unique voice of your own with whatever talent you have..and as he said no rules,,just make up your own as you go,,don't try and be JD or domi. plenty of horrid musicians made it anyway..lol,,,just look at modern commercial pop music.

@@mikemorenilla7444 I don't think David's point is that everyone can play like Domi and JD, it's that they first ASPIRED to be this good and then they actually TRIED to get there. It's OK to aspire to be great! It's better to try for greatness than to have a limiting belief that you'll never make it. - A fellow music teacher

I like your message early in this video where you say "DO WHAT YOU WANNA DO" Watching a video by famed bassist Victor Wooten where he essentially says the same thing. Music is an expression of the person and since we're all individuals, our expressions will be individual. Was in a guitar center where an older man was playing bass with a young man. Look like he was no older than 19 or 20. The older guy asked him to play a particular chord and the young man didn't know it. Didn't stop him from finding the right key and playing along which I thought was cool. He played by ear. The older man started saying to him, how come you don't know the chord. If you're going to be a pro you have to know chords and music theory. I chimed in immediately and said that's completely not true. Young man just play. That's what artist do. The older man turns to me and says what musician of note do you know that didn't know chords and music theory. My response...Oh I don't know. Irving Berlin, Jimi Hendrix, The Beetles, Eddie Vanhalen , Michael Jackson, Eric Clapton...i could go on. Shut him right up.

cory henry tribute to melvin crispell. Domi is wonderful classical background and now playing stuff like oscar peterson and weather report but has her own sound entirely. Cory is most famous for snarky puppy lingus , drummer was larnell lewis:), but he learned as 4 year old in church so his playing has no holes but feel is just off the charts and that performance in that tribute is insane, its a ray charles like lesson in feel. Hes playing keys now with bass pedals because there are no limits, like larnell, in expressing himself musically.

Honestly, as a musician of countless instruments and nearly 40 years, these two are INCREDIBLE. I cannot think of anyone I ever played with or seen that play like this. However I cannot agree with your statement that if you have a 4/4 time signature ingrained into our being and your comprehension of it being so enlightened that playing around the 4/4 is a stroke of genius. What JD does is phenomenal. So what are you doing is demonstrating skills he has honed his entire life. He has listened to a lot of technical drummers. He learned unique styles. Anyone who has been a musician for long enough understands time signatures. And a musician should have an internal metronome no matter what. It should always stay constant and you should be able to keep a that consistent foundation inside while playing your instrument and be able to utilize doubling, tripling or halfing with any instrument.

What an unfortunate comment. He's not playing "drum and bass". It's breakbeat which, while it is used in DnB, it's far from being exclusive to it. You obviously don't understand the complexity of his chops otherwise you wouldn't be comparing him to a "beat box". He's a genius, at 16-17 he's probably better at drumming than you'll ever be at anything at all in your life. Sad.
