I'm an autistic female, and god it feels like someone is just making fun of me. Everything about the character is awful and hurtful. It feels so infantilizing and like Music isn't even her own person.
And non speaking autistics are known to have very high sensory sensitivities thus making this pretty much inaccessible for them to watch yet it’s about them and Sia never consulted with one single non speaking autistic about the making of the film.
I feel bad for the actress. She has an incredibly unhealthy relationship with sia and literally started crying on set one time because she said she felt like she was making fun of people.

dude. maddie wasnt the one who "cried and said no"? sia brought a real autistic child on set to play the part but she wasnt comfortable with it so she had maddie fill in instead of pressuring her.
i do highly doubt sia offended people on purpose.. but i don’t understand or get why people are offended by it .. please explain it me cause i like the movie trailer and clips but i don’t want to be offensive by accident ….
The whole obsession día has with Maddie is honestly creepy now, she’s been working w her for over 5 years now and had this been a man he would’ve gotten backlash years ago... idk, something don’t feel right
@@tanithalakai4538 well if she's under a contract and if this movie was made by someone who have helped her career and family so much... and also Sia who was her I guess friend since she was 12 then I think it's inevitable to feel a little pressured into saying good things about the movie even if she isn't comfortable.
Honestly, Sia’s obsession with Maddie is really creepy to me. If Sia was a man, people would be completely against this weird relationship they have. I mean for goodness sake, if Maddie was uncomfortable doing this role and MADE to do it, doesn’t that sound like grooming to anyone?
the way that maddie, a child, had a panic attack because she knew this movie would be offensive to autistic people, and sia still made it go ahead. fucking disgusting.
haha remember when Sia had an autistic actor as the main character, but the actor found the sets too bright and loud, so instead of making it more accessible to the actually autistic girl they changed actor?
Well not to say Sia is right for this but that's literally business. Like if you had a character who has to fight someone throughout the movie and they say the set is too dark and the blood grosses them out, they'd simply replace the actor. So if an actor thinks a musical is too loud and bright they will replace them instead of cater the entire movie to make them feel good.
@@ab-yf1gg the problem is that sis made a movie for autistic people and basically admitted that the surrounding was not good for them. you see the problem? she’s trying so hard to advocate for autism but creates an environment that is not good for them.
I remember the school bullies making these faces and making these noises to make fun of the kids in the autistic unit. But when it is applied in front of a camera, it's suddenly ok? My son is autistic and it makes me feel physically sick to imagine this happening to him. This is a green light for every school bully to continue to use this behaviour in a mocking fashion.

It feels creepy at best.

@Nadia no shit. the movie still isn’t ok the main character is being played by a neurotypical girl and on top of that fucking autism speaks was part of the team that worked on this. if that doesn’t say something idk what does
@Rik rik why are you mansplaining a condition you don’t even have. obviously there’s people with more severe autism. the problem is the main character is being played by a neurotypical actress who doesn’t actually know what it’s like to be autistic, thus her imitating what she thinks autistic people do is a mockery even tho it wasn’t her intention cuz she didn’t even wanna work on the film. maddie cried on multiple occasions after shoots cuz she felt like she was mocking us and Sia wouldn’t drop her. on top of that they did originally have an actual autistic girl playing music and they fired her cuz it was “too difficult to work with her” on top of that autism speaks also had a hand in this moving being made and they are a disgusting hate group that DOES NOT help autistic people. stop defending this movie, actual autistic people are very upset about this movie being made and your not being a very god ally
This is one pretty good example of how someone should stick with what they are originally good at, in the case of Sia she writes and makes music a lot better. 🎶🎵🎶🎵
My sister cried non stop watching this trailer because she loves sia. Worse, she couldn't even watch it fully because of the bright colours and the representation felt like someone was bullying her right in front of me.

The fact that this movie is really from the older sister's pov rather than Music's pov is really some empty "representation." Instead of bringing Music's story to life, Music was just used as a tool to help her sister grow based off what was shown in this trailer :(
@@indiag6361 yeah but sia said multiple times she wanted to give autistics a voice with this movie, pretty hard to do when the caregiver is the protagonist as that’s naturally who you empathize with when experiencing a story. Also if what’s eating Gilbert grape is the bar for autistic representation we’re all fucked cause that bar’s 10,000 feet below sea level
So basically 'Music' is sidelined whenever it's suddenly convenient. Then the older sis comes in, who has a drug and alcohol problem like Sia used to. So, this is actually some fucked up self insert movie by Sia.
Have you ever seen "For the Love of Gabe" and many other families dealing with non verbal autism in the facebook and youtube community? I am so angered by your comment. Not everyone on the spectrum is verbal and Sia chose to portray someone non verbal. This movie's comments really show me how little people know about autism. Back in the day, the lines were very clear. People with autism were people that acted like MUSIC. Now everyone is on the spectrum....including me. Just because Sia chose to write about her non verbal friend does not mean it does not exist. Do better!!!!
I dislike this film so much because it makes instead of showing the difficulties of being autistic, it shows the difficulties of dealing with someone who is autistic, which is insanely insensitive. Have you seen heartbreak high? they actually got a autistic actor to play the autistic character. And the representation was insanely good. I instantly recognised it and it was very good. For you to say that back in the day all autistic people acted like music is insanely bigoted and ableist and it honestly shocks me. You wanna know why you think that? Its because "back in the day" doctors and psychologists who dealt with these things had very limited information on what autism was, so they thought it was just someone who acted like that. Not all autistic people a non-verbal. I get it, some are. But that doesn't mean they act like this. How is it offensive? My brother is the same, my sister works with ppl with severe autism and it is accurate. Just because the actor isnt autistic it does not mean that anyone's mocking anyone. You all need to get a grip. STOP MAKING EVERYTHING ABOUT YOURSELF AND TURN IT INTO A PERSONAL PROBLEM. Just because you don't like something it does not mean it's offensive for ffs
@@lovinqmochxii1603 oh, alright.. love? did you really have to mention you're autistic? No. No one cares, besides the point the point is that ppl are getting offended about literally nothing. It's ridiculous just like the hate that the movie, sia and the actress is getting :D xxx bye love ;)
I’m a high-functioning Autistic guy and I personally don’t mind the idea of a non-Autistic actor playing an Autistic character. What I do have a problem with, however, is the character they’re portraying being unrealistic to the point of borderline mockery, which this definitely is. I’m sure Sia had pure intentions when making this movie, but she completely failed.
@accompanist603 People within the autistic community have the right to be portrayed in ways that they--not you or anyone else outside of their community--feel are respectful and realistic, not dehumanizing and disrespectful. To do otherwise is to say that the feelings of the autistic community don't matter, when they absolutely do!
@Elijah Cook I found out about this film through a RU-vid channel put out by a guy with Aspbergers called My Aspie World when he was criticizing this movie in his most recent video along with a girl who also has Aspbergers. Having no context for the film I looked it up and watched the trailer here. Having had friends with autism I was horrified by this trailer! While it's of course not my place to speak for the autistic community, the portrayal came off as a completely dehumanizing caricature of everyone I've ever known with autism! According to folks in the autism community over on My Aspie World, too, people in the autism & Aspbergers community reached out to Sia to talk to her about what makes this film so problematic, and she just simply offered a really trite, superficial apology, and then refused to listen any further--even deleting her Twitter account when people in the community approached her about it on there! It shows that she doesn't really care about those with Aspbergers and autism, she simply wants to use a demeaning portrayal of them to make a movie that she can make money off of. It's a selfishly disgusting attitude in the extreme! If she really cared about the autistic community, then she would be willing to listen to the autistic community!
@@jimmylittle9393 as an autistic, NO! You’re either born autistic or you’re not. Everyone is NOT autistic. By that logic, everyone who is Southern European is a little black because they have black and dark eyes, yet have pasty white skin.
This hurts me so much for 2 reasons.. 1. Maddie didn't want to do this but was basically FORCED to do it; Sia made it impossible for her to escape this role. It disgusts me that she had to go through this. 2. Most people with autism are capable of proper communicating and doing (some) work, but we struggle a lot with our own demons, whether it is socially, work, school or all of them. We fight so hard, every single day, and yet we're being mocked. Even though the movie is probably made with 'good intentions', it only brings pain to most of us. It's so disappointing to see another stereotypical and unfair screenplay. We are people, not jokes. I might not be able to work in noisy rooms, but with some space & peace I can write you a perfect blog/review and build a gorgeous website. I might come over rude when not looking into your eyes, but I can deeply sympathize with someone's story, problems or struggles. I might not be able to put everything in the right words when talking, but I can express myself amazingly on paper. And that's just me, while there are so many other autistic people who have so much more amazing things to offer. Just because we might be a bit 'different', we're not weird or incapabel. We are all talented and deserve to be acknowledged like any other talented person. If you doubt yourself because of your autism, please know that you deserve to be acknowledged. You deserve to develop your talents and do what you love. You deserve to be accepted and loved. You are not weird, awkward, annoying or impossible. You are perfect the way you are. Nothing changes the fact that you're amazing and gorgeous. Beauty comes in many shapes and sizes - that also counts for our perfectly imperfect neuro divergent brains!
@Philip Cummins Emotional manipulation can do a lot with a young girl and a money-hungry mom. When she was quite young, the role was already assigned to her (her mom signed the contract IIRC? she was about 14 I think back then) and Sia is basically being predatory towards Maddie (weird, really awkward intimate relationship together) which makes her extremely vulnerable. So, 1. the contract, 2. the emotional manipulation from Sia, 3. the absurd relationship and control that Sia has over her.
@@soph1683 what these people don’t understand is that is isn’t even 100% about an autistic character being played by a neurotypical person (it should be played by autistic person i’m not disputing that). it feels like a mockery because a lot of the motions and expressions she makes have been used to mock autistic people for years. part of their research was watching videos of autistic adults and children having severe meltdowns which is highly invasive and is posted to humiliate them, ‘3 years of research’ yet planned to be involved with autism speaks until even them the harmful basically autistic hate group denounced her further proof she’s shit. in interviews agreed with people calling non verbal autistics objects ‘like a wig’ and the actual content is harmful in the film there are multiple meltdown scenes that people stop by restraining music which is highly overwhelming and if people apply that to real life when autistic people have meltdowns they will literally have trauma from it
@@soph1683 like even if they had someone with low support needs but still autistic play the character thatd be fine because they’re autistic. some parts could push that’s it’s mockery but they still have the same disorder
@@absolutelychampagne acting is supposed to be believable, you are supposed to forget the person in the screen is an actor pretending to be other person. This looks so artificial and you never get to immerse in the acting, and as an autistic person, this looks more like the kids that mocked me for being autistic rather than someone acting like a an autistic person, sweety.
@Ada Nb Actually, I think that what they mean is that if you create/say something, you make sure that it is at least one of the things above (it doesn't have to be ALL of the things, but at least one). Otherway what you're saying is completely irrelevant and thus you shouldn't say it at all. I hope I made myself clear hahaha my english is not that good yet
I feel like if they wanted to make a movie to raise awareness about autism, they could’ve actually used someone with autism to play their role to make it more realistic and raw instead of glorifying it with someone that didn’t even want that role in the first place. And more research would probably have been helpful before producing it, in my opinion. 🤷🏻♀️
this honestly seems like a movie with a good storyline, but they shouldn't have gotten a non-autistic person to play to the role of one. that's the main problem in my opinion...
As an autistic girl, I’m really offended by this. This is not good representations in any sense of the word and I wish this movie never existed it’s just a fucking mockery of actual autistic people The actress who played music (Maddie Ziegler I think) didn’t even want to so please don’t criticize her as a person
fr like im high functioning on the spectrum so i mask people which means i appear to be just like everyone else. the only things that are really different are my inability to understand sarcasm and people’s emotions, sensory issues, a heightened sense of hearing which makes everything a little overwhelming and severe social anxiety. there’s a lot more but like it’s offensive for sia to assume that all of us autistics are non verbal :((
@@spiderpants4014 who don’t have what? i think im allowed to be offended lol i literally have this condition. it’s basically stereotyping every autistic person to be non verbal. please don’t tell me what not to be offended at im literally autistic
@@skvlxc I understand where you're coming from ..but it is very common knowledge that not everyone who has autism is non-verbal so I wouldn't personally see it as stereotypical.... I can think of dozens of shows which represent milder autism but generally its way less common to see more severe austism in the media because it is rarely represented. ... not that I agree with how the film handled it at all . Everything about it was handled badly honestly . The fact the trailer itself is so sensory and not even accommodating an autistic actress is all just ... dodgy .
@@okaythen333 i understand that, i just find it unfair of sia also that she didn’t cast an actual autistic girl for the role because she had a meltdown from a sensory overload which is understandable considering the lighting choice and all the bright colours. it disgusts me that she’s trying to spread awareness while being blatantly ableist during filming. it feels as though she’s doing it to make herself and maddie look good
This is my thought as well. For all of Sia's claims that she researched for years to make a film for us, the focus is still through the eyes of a family member/caretaker. If I had Disney+ I'd watch Loop. I've heard it was received well.
Wait, this is a love story? I didn't really get that from the trailer, unless you meant the 'I love her' part. Love doesn't always have to be romantic but idk.
@@miaa1762 I don't know it for a fact, I just thought there was some flirting between Kate Hudson's character and Leslie Odom Jr's character lol but my main point was what @KristiChan1 was saying about these stories often being from the caretaker's pov
I'm sick of these movies where autistic characters are just there to make some drama. They're not even real characters, they look more like pets who are there to help to tell the story of the main character. Tne main character usually some selfish idiot who doesn't know a thing about empathy.
@@avz5630 i have and maddie’s character shows more of how people mock autistic people than how they actually are. And the movie is made to include autistics and in a way they cant be because for one it’s offensive and all the flashing lights and bright colours they cant look at so...
@@avz5630 yes there are. She should have hired one to portray the character. Insinuating that autistic actors shouldn’t be cast in roles because it is “too stressful” on your set shows she is the problem, not the original actress. She should have worked more with the original actress and accommodated her needs. You know... making things accessible for the people you claim to be “helping”.
absolutely disgusting, incredibly disrespectful, and blatantly ableist. feel bad for maddie in the situation, i hope sia gets some serious karma for the damage she inflicted to so many with this
@@hanin_gurl ok? he's a grown adult who can do what he wants. i understand being sympathetic to maddie, who was a minor while making this, but leslie is a grown man who can make his own choices. maybe he's not as good a person as we thought he is.
@@ellasedits_ Well maybe or maybe not. Yes I understand he is an adult, and he makes his own decisions. And I completely agree that he shouldn't have done it if he didn't want to. But sia was quite manipulative, as she kept telling everyone it was OK while it was not.
i feel awful for Maddie. she literally broke down because she felt like she was mocking the autistic community. i'm pretty sure she feels she couldn't say no because she didn't want to damage her relationship with SIa.
As an autistic, 14 year old girl- I know it’s not my place to say anything but I’m my opinion this is so offensive, and you can’t even blame Maddie because she did say she was uncomfortable with this role…. Also all the bright colours and loud noises is actually difficult to process as someone on the spectrum.
I can articulate why: it's an ableist, stereotypical, and very clearly under researched portrayal. Sia is ableist and has admitted that. Its honestly a mockery.
@@brumi1061 hate bandwagon?? are you serious? this movie is creating harmful stereotypes about people with autism and clearly neglecting the representation that people on the spectrum deserve. YOU make me sick. educate yourself and then come back.
I’m an autistic girl and this is beyond disrespectful. I feel like someone is making fun of me! This is so ableist and stereotyped. This just hurt our community and spread more misinformation about us.
Can you explain where the misinformation is? Because I don't see it. I would think this movie would help more people understand what some Autistic people may go through. Right? I know my son is a lot liike the character that Maddie plays. So I can relate some. Everyone that is on the spectrum is different. Maddie's role was more on the severe side of the spectrum. It's not disrespectful to make a movie with people having roles as she did. I don't see where anyone is being made fun of.
@@inerdalicious I’m autistic, me and many others in the autistic community find it offensive. Here are some reasons why music is ableist 1. Sia teamed up with autism speaks to make the movie. Autism speaks is a hate group against autism and wants to cure it. If she did even a bit of research she’d know that the autistic community doesn’t like autism speaks. 2. Sia uses functioning labels. Those are offensive because people used those labels to insult us. 3. Sia’s movie also shows very dangerous ways to deal with an autistic person having a break down or panic attack, such as going on top of them and tightly holding on. That’s a terrible way to help an autistic person, or any person. 4. The way the character Music acts is very stereotypical. The way she acts is exactly how someone mocking autism would. 5.when the autistic community corrected her movie, sia said that they were wrong and she knew more about autism then autistic people themselves. 6. There are tons of bright colors and flashing lights, and that is a common trigger for autistic people. 7. It has a lot of misinformation in it. And how she showed Musics mind is inaccurate. 8. She claims she did three years of research but there’s tons of misinformation and offensive scenes with music, and how they talked about her. 9. She said she hired an autistic girl at first to play the role but she was too hard to work with. This made her situation even worse when it was proven that it was a lie, because years before the movie she said Maddie would be playing the role. I suggest watching a video review *from an autistic person* about Music.
*I just wanna know what’s up with Sia’s literal obsession with Maddie...I mean if the genders were different people would be uncomfortable. She’s clearly obsessed with making her a massive star.*
Maddie is an extremely talented girl and she’s super professional. It makes sense that Sia would want to work with her. It’s all in your mind. Don’t make up things to suit your narrative
It’s absolutely hilarious to see all these people only judging based off of the movie 😂 I am an autistic person, diagnosed at 19. I have a friend named Noah who is also autistic, and since it is a SPECTRUM, he acts like this. And yes, the whole scene with Music’s sister holding her down is bad. But if you haven’t seen the movie, you won’t understand how it works. Sia is very clearly trying to show the uneducated people (represented by Music’s sister) that doing that to an autistic person is terrible. Autism is a spectrum. It is foolish to say that “autistic people don’t act like this” because they can, and they do. It is a spectrum. Get educated before judging. PLUS: Sia did in fact apologize for the movie, people claim she didn’t.
