If I were asked to share an example with my friends of what it means for musicians to "serve the song" in a performance, I would choose this video and pray for no commercial interruption. Every single person on that stage brought their "A" game out of unwavering respect and love for these songs.

I have come back to this so many times. Very few singers, even really good ones, have the nerve to cover Joni's Coyote. This is just marvellous. Stunning. Beautiful. Could not have been better. I hope Joni sees it ... I think she'll like it. Well ... then there's her take on A Case of You. Equally well done. I cannot imagine what it w ouldbe like to sing this well. It must be one of the best feelings in the world.

I always brace myself for turbulence when I see a vocalist take on a Joni cover.. but Aoife O'Donovan absolutely nailed it, and she sounds a lot like Joni to boot. Fantastic!

Totally agree re the Bassplayer. Really great tone and playing through Coyote. To be critical I thought she sang that song a bit flat. She kicked up a gear to sing Case of you though.

Actually Aoife's voice doesn't fit well with old-time and bluegrass -even though she sings it often- she's too smooth and even.

Yes, using only the bridge pickup and right hand fingering near the bridge as he does, gives that sound. And being a really good bass player helps too!

@@marymcmurtry6140 thank you! Will check up on that. Shes amazing. While we are on the topic of beautiful vocalists...do you know Jo Lawry? If not start with Sting's symphonicity tour in 2010. There are a few different recordings of it and a dvd presentation of the berlin performance. She is an australian singer with heavy jazz influence. Sting put her through the gauntlet and she met every challenge...added so much to that lineup.

The equisite performances of Coyote and Case of You brought tears to my eyes. Aoife sang both of the these with the same level of emotion that Joni Mitchell did. The instrumental parts of these songs subtle and superb. It never ceases to amaze me how Chris Thile and his band mates consistently nails so many songs that they have never played before so well in live performances.

Awesome cover! I love that Chris talked about the tunings she used. She used to drive her tech mad on live performances needing a different tuning for nearly every song. That version of Marci was great. Haven't listen to that album for a while.

Last week I saw Brandi Carlile live and she covered Case of You. At the time I thought it was the best cover of that song I had ever heard, hands down. That just changed...wow!! There is a reason why I'm With Her is one of the best bands in the world today. Aoife, Sara and Sarah are so great individually, and that is just tripled when the join together. Damn that was so good!!!

"The bass players that I worked with before just kind of played through it like four beats to the bar, you know, polka-dotting along. And they couldn’t see the shapes of the music or where the pressure points were. They couldn’t grasp it. So you had to wait for somebody like Jaco to come along who had one foot in rock ’n’ roll and one foot in jazz. I respectfully feel the opposite. I wish it were powerful. I just can't enjoy Aoife's whispering, trailing-off the end-of-phrase style. I can't understand her lyrics half the time. She hits every note, when she belts or at least puts her lungs into it her tone is beautiful, but damn.....finish the phrase! Sarah and Rachel and Gabby and Sara any day.

Joni is my religion since the first note of Blue, I usually don’t like covers of her songs, but this is a good cover, her voice has the quirks of how Joni sang this. This band is great.

I compare him to Pat Metheny (who played with Joni). Chris could have been anything - a cardiovascular surgeon, a ground breaking physicist - yet, he chose the mandolin. Aren't we lucky!!??

Became a fan of Joni after seeing her 1969 concert in Edwardsville IL. It was televised on PBS in 1970 and hosted by Steve Allen. No way to record the video back then however I recorded the audio on my Grundig 4 track reel to reel and hope to buy a 4 track recorder to play it since my Grundig is long gone. The last time I saw her in person was in 1979 when my wife, her father and I attended her concert at the Mpls Auditorium. My father-in-law was more of a fan of Joan Baez who we saw at Northrop Auditorium about a month earlier.

O’Donovan is queen of Americana.....she seldom puts the foot on the gas...... there is always more under the musical bonnet,this is proof positive of her consummate subtlety and restrained authority. One thing America does like no other ,find singers as good this woman.

Maybe purists... Or maybe a reflection of the missing energy of Joni's original - hard to reproduce... Or maybe that tiny bungle of the lyric that messed up the juxtaposition of the two differing life clocks that's pretty important to understanding the song. All legit complaints, though I thumbed it up.

Joni Mitchell is my musical hero and A Case of You is my favorite of her songs and I feel SO blessed to hear Aoife cover it so perfectly. Coyote is also amazing. As for Marcie, I honestly didn't know it was a Joni Mitchell song for the longest time since I first heard it on Chris Thile & Brad Mehldau's album... but one listen to Song to a Seagull changed that!

I've loved A CASE OF YOU since I first heard it... I was about 19 and it just floored me! I wanted to write one song with lyrics one tenth that fantastic... I'm 60 years old now and have been writing ever since, but still haven't come close. Yeah, who has???

Joni Mitchell is one of the most difficult musicians to cover, with her unique vocal phrasing and the difficult time signatures of her songs... not to mention her incomparable voice. I love Aoife... she so amazingly flexible and capable and confident... no one has ever covered Coyote better than this.

I've been loving Joni Mitchell from the time she sang Both Sies Now. This was an exceptional performance from everyone involved. A Case of You was expertly done James Blake does that song too. It's his favorite Joni Mitchell song. He does it very well.

I should point out that I'm a HUGE Joni Mitchell fan. My ex and I got to see her at the Universal Amphitheater in LA on the Miles of Aisles tour. That having been said, I LOVE these songs done by one of my favorite singers around. Nicely done, Aoife and everyone.
