Musician/Producer Reacts to "Samaltau" by Dimash BOTH 2020 & 2021 versions

Kazakh folk song
In 1916, during the second year of Great War (World War I), the Russian Empire carried huge human and property losses. The burden of restocking was laid on subject nations. About 49 million hectares of fertile land were forcibly taken away during the war from Kazakhs. The owners were driven out into the barren wastes. Taxes increased form 3 to 15 times. For the needs of war, livestock and property were mass requisitioned. And finally it came to "requisition" of people. On 24th of June 1916, the Russian Tsar issued a decree that a half-million Central Asians, aged 19-43, were to be mobilised for army and labour brigades in the war effort. This decree was the spark for the Kazakh uprising, although the underlying reason was Russian colonisation and the usurpation of Kazakh lands.
Song "Samal Tau" tells about this sad events for young Kazakh in this difficult time.
The song is about young, about 28 year old (a little over 2 mushels = 2 dozens born in the year of the cow = 1889) recruit walking from Samal village (close to Shalkar lake in West-North Kazakhstan) to Omsk, as he was forced to register for the Russian military according to a decree predating the revolt by a few months. He was walking for 15 days and almost reached Omsk.
Samal - a gentle breeze, a mountain breeze, bearing the evening or morning cool. The word "samal" itself is associated with something pleasant, bearing enjoyment. Therefore, Kazakhs woman often have a female name Samal.
Tau - mountain, hill.

Samaltau is one of the most stunning songs I've ever heard in my life, from how, in the beginning, the instruments sound like the wind blowing, water flowing, leaves rustling, and even wolves or coyotes howling, to the actual melody and then Dimash' powerful voice. Breathtaking, just breathtaking.

When Kazakhstan belonged to Russia, young Kazakhs were forced by the Russian Empire to leave their homes and fight for many years until they were completely slaughtered. The story of one of these young people, who marches desperately into a war that is not his, in addition to the sadness of leaving his parents, elderly, with no one to take care of and the certainty that he will never see the mountains (“tau”) of Kazakhstan again, generated this wonderfully sad song! In addition to Dimash's talent, we have a wonderful setting and two fantastic musicians: Olzhas - Master in playing the Qobyz (Kobyz, which looks like a violin) the other who plays the "Rainstick"! A supernatural journey to the plains of Kazakhstan, through Music!

The second performance was from his digital show, put on during covid. No audience. They just showed scenes from previous concerts with audiences applauding etc, inbetween songs. We paid ten or twenty dollars to see the concert, which we watched at the same time, no matter what country you were in, so all us dears together could have the same experience. I think it lasted ninety minutes and he performed old favourites and four new songs, did new backdrops, outfits and arrangements. No expense spared. And a lot of the profits went to charity. He has since been releasing each of the songs.

Samaltau means “mountain breeze” and the first version was during the quarantine from Dimash home studio with those two musicians only. Dimash is a master of storytelling, he can take you there where this situation took place. The gentleman playing the Kobyz is master Olzhas Qurmanbeck, the best player in Kazakhstan 🎻🔝 Kobyz is an ancient tool of the people who lived in the East, including nomads. It was used in ancient times by steppe shamans-healers for various rites. Kobyzy is made from a single piece of wood. This is one of the oldest ways of making musical instruments in the history of mankind. It is not due to technical backwardness or the lack of metal devices. According to the ancient beliefs of many people, only in a single piece will the living singing soul of the tree remain, which will sound in the instrument. The open body and strings of the kobyz from a bunch of 30-60 untwisted horse hair give a very thick, overtone-rich timbre. The Kobyz is the first stringed instrument ever. The version 2021 and the special effects is great too, however I like more the version 2020, it is more mystical, the instrumentation is stunning, sometimes less is more and Dimash cross legged singing like that … amazing!!!! ❤️🔝🎤🌹🌹👏👏👏👏👏👏

👉This bowl-neck lute played with a bow is an old Turkic stringed instrument and called Kobys or Kylkobyz in Kazakhstan. The Kyrgyz variant, for example, is called the kyl-kyyak. The Kobys is the oldest string instrument in the world and, according to a German scientist, it spread beyond the borders of the nomadic area of Central Asia and became the prototype of all European string instruments. (Turkic means: The Turkic peoples are a collection of ethnic groups from Central, East, North and West Asia as well as parts of Europe and North Africa who speak Turkic languages. Difference between Turkic and Turkish - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-PqxhtBecVeg.html ) A legend about Kobyz says that this instrument was created by the great steppe narrator Korkyt-Ata, who lived in the 10th century and that the tool is charged with magical and even mystical properties and sounds like animal voices. In addition, the Kazakh people believed that the spirits of their ancestors spoke to them through this music. The old outlook and piety towards their instruments and music was constantly preserved in traditional Kazakh society and ensured the highest spiritual level of musical art and a special respectful attitude towards musical instruments. Simple people, for example, did not dare to touch the shaman's Kobyz. It is said: The balance between the courses of life and death on earth can be maintained by playing the Kobyz.

Two songs that would elicit dimash emotion to The point of him crying. This samaltau and daidadau. He first sung it in I a.m singer in China. He said, The result of The competition doesnt matter. His ultimate aim is to sing his native song to The world. So when he sung daidadau, he was fiulfilled. The story is about a poet who was imprisoned and his was informed that his wife was seeing someone else. His best performance was in bastau, in his Channel its adai and daidadau combined. Please watch till The end. Even after The song was over. In New York concert he cried for he said “dreams do come true”. But I really Love The bastau daidadau version for he went full Kazakhstan gear, instrumentation and musician.

Thank you Stratele, for these reactions. Both were worthy of Grammys. This music is what Dimash wants to do. He wants to introduce the world to both his culture and also to mix his culture with pop. I’ve always been afraid of What America would do to him after that singing competition worlds best put him against children when they told him they would not do. So then after that Dimash did a concert in NYC at the Barclays Center. But, look he hasn’t been back. Youre a producer you know things about American producers. They just use and abuse singers up and steal artist songs. Dimash has had a taste of what can happen. Dimash is independent and has a father that is a producer. The first song was for the Tokyo jazz festival. The 2022 jazz festival - Dimash learned his 15 language performance of Ikanaide. The breathing techniques could only have been done by Dimash. No pop singer even classical singer could do it.

👉 Samaltau - names a beautiful place. In Kazakhstan, many women's names have 'samal' as the first syllable. The first performance of this song took place, at the closing ceremony of the Silk Road International Film Festival (2019) - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-8BlSafjKujk.html (with backround informations) For Dimash this song 'Samaltau' has a special spiritual meaning. This song, very well known in Kazakhstan, is sung about the hard mass of people, about their suffering. It was written when the Tsar forcibly recruited the young men from Kazakhstan during World War I. They marched endless distances. Many did not understand what to do in a foreign country. Their fields withered and their wives, children and elderly parents were left alone. The Tsar, then the Soviets, attacked the country and harassed, recruited and decimated the population. In 1934, after a great famine, 2 million Kazakhs had survived. Today 18 million people live in the Republic of Kazakhstan, 70% of them Kazakhs, 19% Russians and other ethnic groups. Dimash sang this song on the Tokyo Jazz Festival in 2020. Because of the pandemic, the annual Tokyo Jazz Festival took place online. Dimash sings 2 songs live in his home studio. : * SOS - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-WdKYDoqKLP8.html * Samaltau - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-UvMRkiYu3Js.html * Dimash Digital Show 2021- Samaltau - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-QnQbmB6KXME.html Dimash also was one of the few foreigners who has been asked to attend the live online show marking the inauguration of the President of U.S.A. Joe Biden (2021). He was there as a representative of his country Kazakhstan and he was also there for his Dears from all over the world. He performed: * S.O.S. - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-sE-9fQTFyas.html * Samaltau - ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-OLrFs0WRxgY.html

I agree with you about the second video with the intensity of his performance being greater both in his voice and his body movements. One of my favorites among all of the mesmerizing Dimash performances showcasing his talent and those of his accompanists playing their beautiful Kazakh instruments building the sounds of the wilderness as the background to the lyrics. His closed eyes show him centering himself and when he opens his eyes he embodies the lament of being forced to become a soldier. 👉 Rainmaker or Rainstick originally comes from northern Chile. Its origin is the very dry Atacama region, where it was first built by the Diaguitas Indians in the Elqui Valley and used for rain ceremonies. It is originally made from the copado cactus. Only dead cacti that are already lignified are used. The thorns are driven into the interior of the cactus. Then the rainmaker is filled with small pebbles and sealed at both ends. If you turn the rainmaker over, the small pebbles fall from one spike to the next. This creates a pleasant, even sound that is reminiscent of flowing water or the sound of thick raindrops. While in South America the medicine men wanted to lure the longed-for rain with the soft, rustling sound of the rainmaker, people enjoy the pleasant sound with its calming effect. The sound spectrum ranges from a fine, gentle drizzle to the mighty roar of a downpour. It 'rains' all the more persistently, the longer the rainmaker is and the more spikes block the path of the pebbles. (www)

The instrument is the Kobyz. It's a 2 stringed instrument, with one string made up of 75 horse hairs, and the other string made from 60 horsehairs (and the curved bow which is made with 40 horse hairs). The strings aren't pushed down to a fret, but rather are played with pressure by either the fingernail, or by a pad on the finger, as well as the tones varied by the pressure of the bow.

Dimash ha dicho que esta es la canción que más se le dificulta cantar, no por la composición musical sino por la historia que dice la letra de la canción.

Please watch also Dimash's older performance of Samaltau in China, the link is provided below by Tirallala. The visual effect is also stunning and Dimash looks more refreshed and handsome in that performance.

One of my forever favorites I love both versions. The Kobyz, is played by Olzhas Qurmanbeck one of the best Players of Kasachstan, and one of Dimashes best friends!

Hi Bud, Amazing reaction to these two performances of a traditional song. The first one 2020 was streamed live from that studio to the festival in Tokyo, the second one was from Dimash's digital show which was streamed online in Jan 2021, in the absence of any live conerts due to the pandemic. There was no audience, the stage was constructed in a gym (which also couldnt be used at that time) but there is a video on here showing a bit behind the scenes and all the electrics, computers etc plus all the people involved in the filming, sound board and special effects were all situated were the audience would have been. All the performances from the Digital show are on Dimash's YT channel, worth a look. Btw The two string Kazakh instrument is the kobyz which has featured in quite a few Dimash performances and also used in Films scores of times.👍👍😊

Since you liked hearing him sing in his native language, I have a suggestion for a double reaction 😁 "Unforgettable Day" 2017 GAKKU concert : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-u52XDilf628.html - where he hits a *D 8* above piano range (to bounce back after a split second voice closing) "Unforgettable Day" 2021 : ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-W5D20sNvnHY.html - no whistle notes, but he leaves his whole heart on the stage, and throws some soul elements into the song. *In this order :)* This is a song he composed the music for when he was ~18 yo, and it`s one of the songs he changes up and improvises the most, from performance to performance. I would love to get your opinion on these 2 performances :) (the first one doesn`t have subtitles, but the second one does ; it`s a love balad, very beautiful ; do watch the 2017 one first, even if it doesn`t have CC, and you`ll see the lyrics in the 2021 version, the more "mature" one :) ) P.S. The second version of Samaltau was from his Digital concert 2021, during the pandemic. That concert later got cut into separate performances and some of them became new "MVs" for those songs :) "Unforgettable Day" 2021 that I linked is also from the Digital concert :)

Gracias por tan sensibles reacciones. Coincido, ambas me gustaron, pero escénicamente la versión de 2021 aporta más dramatismo. Dimash siempre me sorprende. Cuando comienzo a verlo, quiero escuchar su canto excepcional las veces más posibles.

Thank you so much for a most interesting reaction! I have watched both versions tens of times, but it wasn't until today I noticed the emotional difference in Dimash's voice in 2020 and 2021! Perhaps he felt closer to his audience in the 2021 version since this Digital Show was a gift to his fans (Dears) during the covid. He also had his friends in the band at the same stage (but I'm not quite sure about this). In a normal concert, Dimash derives his energy from the audience, the band, the backup singers and the dances - his friends. Dimash feels very deep for his country and its people. Sometimes you could watch/react to the opening song of his first big solo concert Bastau in 2017: Qazaqstan. Patriotic songs don't necessarily have to be melancholic or serious, like ours...🤣🤣🤣

Hello!🥰 The Kobyz is Such a versatile instrument...with a Master playing...you can hear the Howling of the Wind, the Wolves, feel the fatigue and desolation of this young man as he's force-marched to his fate in a far-off land. And Dimash, of course, is the icing on the cake! SUCH a sad, beautiful song.👌👌🔥💕💕💕💕

I love this song. The tornado like smoke and the lights you described as thunder, represent the smoke and flashes of fire of the cannons used during WWI. The Kazakh soldiers were used to dig the trenches. I really enjoyed your reactions. Take care. ❤️🙏🕊

Great reaction, thank you! This song never fails to get me teary, and twice in a row is a lot. You were wondering how they did the special effects.... this was during the height of the pandemic, so it was an online live-streamed concert. Because of that, they did the whole concert in Augmented Reality, so a blend of practical effects (like the screen behind him, some smoke and mist on some songs) and digital effects placed live (and thus needing to be able to account for camera movements, camera changes, and Dimash's movements, sort of like how a sports broadcast places lines and callouts on-screen even though it's live and unscripted). In another song, there are whales floating around above him. It's incredible!

Glad you did both as well...havnt watched them back to back before was interesting. Yes special affects Def set the scene..also I love it when he adds that cry/plea to his voice..it felt a little more raw as apposed to the first one which felt a little more restrained. First one I'd say absolute master class in technicality...second one felt more real(as well as vocally perfect obviously).. DIMASH in black leather..Def worth mentioning in this one ..thanks for reacting ! 😊

I love this song and I prefer this Tokyo Jazz Festival version cause we can see these amazing instruments better. Dimash has talented artists colaborating with him and it's a such pleasure discover new folk sounds. I love the sound of Kobys (I hope the name it's right) and this other instrument that sounds like rain, amazing. And Dimash's performance? Magic! Divine! Even if you don't know the lyrics you can feel the power and strong in it. Beautiful! 😍🇧🇷
