This is an ultimate grower for me. One of many, indeed. It has the strong pop-punk vibe but not your usual Asian pop-punk. Band-maid is their own genre.
Yes!!! I totally skipped it because of the title because it conquers up images of young kids on RU-vid doing stupid shit. Then I realized well they probably mean it more towards what yolo literally means my god it’s one of my favorite band maid songs now
I grew up with rock; Elvis hit his early fame in my lifetime, and many others. I have heard some great music over nearly seven decades. And this is my #1 group since I first heard them 4 years ago. They understand music, they have hooks all over the place, they are kickass hard rock, they are a charismatic, immensely skilled live band who give 200% to the audience and have great interaction with them, but also have a blast doing it. And on top of that, all the knowledge about them shows good, caring people behind all that. And not difficult to look at either. They are pretty damn perfect.
The late, great RUSH drummer Neil Peart was a prime example of a master of his craft. BAND-MAID's Akane is a primate example of a master of her craft :)
A brief guide to associate names with roles, in order of seniority: Miku Kobato (mee-koo) - (Kuruppo, the Small Pigeon, the Girl with the Red Rose, the Little Engine Who Will): rhythm guitar, backing vocals, principal lyricist, tireless Spokespigeon, band founder. Kanami Tono (kah-nah-mee) - (Kanamincho, Mincho, Princess Gums): lead guitar, keyboards, principal composer, arranger. Akane Hirose (ah-kah-neh) - (A-chan, the Gorilla): drums, sequencing, snacks, definitely not the leader that the band doesn't have. MISA (mee-sah) - (the Barefoot Assassin, MISA MISA MISA!) : bass, booze, occasional wet work. Saiki Atsumi (sah-ee-kee) - (the Ice Queen, Sensei, the Girl with the Blue Rose): lead vocals, lyrics, "We're Done" girl.
YORO English Translation : Original Lyrics : Kobato Miku We put the blame in everything Through unattainable words. The things we can’t win against, It feels that they’re normal in our daily lives. I protect myself from the mass confusion of people. Being together with anyone, I pretended not to see anything, not to hear anything. Each time I lie, my chest tightens up. I open my eyes to seek, the source of the throbbing. I draw up a permanent magic spell, So that I can’t be hindered by anyone. My feelings are getting stronger As the dawn breaks in these wishful days. Ta-ta for now - I’m off to what’s beyond The shining morning glow. It starts from hereon! The word we call “Fate”, We give it out in desperation. It feels like I’m now back to zero, patching out the contemporary tomorrows. My head keeps spinning, somehow I can’t sleep Leaving things unsolved, As I head into the morning, What will change? Dreams and hopes, after having set-backs, They keep piling up on one another. The story of increasing the value of my existence. I’m proud of my rebellious self. I draw up a permanent magic spell, So that I can’t be hindered by anyone. My feelings are getting stronger As the dawn breaks in these wishful days. Ta-ta for now - I’m off to what’s beyond The shining morning glow. It starts from hereon! I draw up a permanent magic spell, I have conceived an unbreakable will. My eyes will never bewilder. I said to the expanding world before me; “Nice to meet you” My heart is pounding in excitement. It only happens once - that’s right, I’ll seize the day. The party is starting - time to prepare. I have no interest in something artistic. I don’t seek anything like eternity. All these boring give and takes, It’s all stupid - so just throw them away. Isn’t it better to collide head on? Fight on, right now. I draw up a permanent magic spell, So that I can’t be hindered by anyone. My feelings are getting stronger As the dawn breaks in these wishful days. Ta-ta for now - I’m off to what’s beyond The shining morning glow. It starts from here on!
The lyricist for the band is Miku, the rhythm guitarist/backup vocals and creator of the group. She writes the lyrics with some input from Saiki, the lead vocalist. The songs overall are written primarily by the lead guitarist Kanami, but MISA and Akane (Bass and Drums) also fill in some parts themselves. The whole band puts in work to make these songs, and the formula has been been working ever since 2016. The first song they wrote as a band was "Alone", everything before that wasn't written by them.
Band-maid is just on another level. You can’t go wrong with any suggestion ... but I agree with whoever said to check out Domination live next. That song is amazing.

Actually even you click on any random official video on their channel, you will still get blown away. They are just that good! Welcome aboard the train!
Secret My Lips is another great composition by them. Like Yolo, its another song where the instrumentation tells the story just as much as the lyrics do.
Nice reaction. Back I think in May while surfing RU-vid, I stumbled upon Daydreaming. Was so impressed with the songwriting, I tried another. This time it was Yolo. Like you I was immediately sold, and they've been my favorite band since then by a country mile. This band's chemistry and musicianship is unique - shows in their "tone" (they are also socially a tight-knit group); the rhythm section (Akane and Misa) are absurdly good musicians individually, and next-level when playing together. For me tho, it was the creative force I felt in their songwriting that really drew me in. Turns out Band-Maid songs are pretty much written by Kanami, the lead guitarist (the other guitarist Miku writes the lyrics after hearing them); their songs I think share a signature quality and consistency because of this. Yolo, for example, was written by Kanami prior to Band-Maid's formation, and lyrics were added because Saiki wanted to sing to it. It took a few years before the band was able to release the stuff written by them, but they stuck it out and now the world is better for it.
Their change-ups are awesome. They make every song like it may be their last and put everything in...but they ain't gonna run out of ideas any time soon. Album #7 pre-ordered.
Be aware when going to read the lyrics, the translation to English is spotty at best. What you need to do, is read the lyrics, get a general "feeling" for them then watch the video again. Even if you do not understand the translation fully, the songs are still awesome. I was hooked from their very first video, Thrill. Watching these ladies progress from great to....I don't even have a word for the level they are at. I just know I enjoy listening to the complexity of each song and how each member adds their own flair, from the vocals to each instrument. Welcome to the fan club.
Watch their live concert videos from 2/14/2020: Domination, Play, Freedom, and Wonderland. Also make sure to check out their music videos for Blooming and Rinne. And then about 30 more gems.
Doesn't matter what song, MISA never let's up. She just has her own solo the entire way through every song and they do a great job of putting her up front in instrumentation and in the mix.
Yolo is about staying true to yourself and not letting others hold you back as you strive for your dreams and goals. Up-beat, positive, affirming. Typical Miku, wise small pigeon of happiness that she is.
I love the instrumental version of this song......yes, the vocals are great but to listen to just the music is just amazing....in particular both the bass and drums are really hot.....to say nothing about the Kanami's solo....
this is maybe one of the easiest songs to learn on bass. and its one of the older occasions she was using her G&L 2000. she's not playing this bass anymore, also rarely playing her american fender 4 string which is shown in their "thrill" video. she quickly jumped to 5string basses from black-cloud playing the black smoker which is the most common bass u see her playing and since late 2019 she got a matte red sg shaped percussion bass. anyway... thanks for your reaction. cant wait to see more BM!
The lyrics are great. Miku really has a way with words and is highly intelligent. I’ve got to warn you though. Translating Japanese to English is very difficult and nuances are lost.
Welcome to Maidiacs mate! My pick is Rinne MV from them, I like the thrashy Bando-Maid style, I love how they rock out with high energy like Real Existence. Bando-Maid for life bro! 👗🐦🐈🎌🎸💗
After watching Different over and over, this seems like it's CRAWLING along. I hope you'll check out their new song "Different" soon, it's... it's a big bite.
Their sound is very similar to another Japanese band called Asian King Fu Generation. Listen to the song Road Movie, it is one of my favorites. Its a clean, punchy catchy rock sound both bands have made their own.
YOLO, Daydreaming, Puzzle and a number of others, are world-class masterpieces. Too bad no one (relatively speaking) knows about them. Band-Maid numbers should be in the tens of millions, if not higher. It's a complete mystery to me how people have moved away from mind, gut, and soul gripping rock... to cheezy, glitz & glam pop entertainers, industrial boy groups, and "I'm to cool for you" commercial hip-hop / rap crap. Maybe groups like Band-Maid, The Warning, Jinjer and others will once again ignite people's musical sensibilities back to where it should be - honest, rock-based, kick-ass music written from the heart -- and yes, that includes everything from classical, R & B, funk, grunge and soul to jazz, fusion, prog and metal. Wow... did I just say all that?? Sorry, slip of the fingers. 🤘😎🤘
Wait until you see them play: Real Existence, Domination, or Freedom. All live from their recent concert 2-14-2020. Also, their song Rhinne (music video) is so so heavy. Wake call to the Hard Rock Male bands out there. You all are getting schooled by a bunch of cute girls in maid outfits. Just amazing.
One of their best songs is Daydreaming. Many reactors overlook it because it is a rock ballad but it is an excellent. Has great vocals from both singers, great melody and powerful guitar solo. Plus it shows a different and unique side
A good Band-Maid song to react to.....click on any of the videos from their RU-vid page. You can't go wrong with what you pick. Then there's more from their live shows that are not even on their RU-vid page, plus a new album is releasing next month so there's new music to add to their already extensive catalog.
Domination live. Great intro to Band maid world. After that pick any Puzzle, Bloom, Rinne, Glory, Play, Freedom, Turn me on......about 30 more. and go for live if you can. I envy you that you can discovery these great songs for the first time :-)
But Kanami was still playing the Addictone guitar here. A japanese custom guitar which i also love. The Mesa Boogie Amp, also helps the PRS a lot! I hope some day to get one of the two: the amp or the PRS.
impossible not to love the MAIDS and their music.at first [4 years ago] i was thinking lyrics also but then they are just so damn good i stopped caring. love the japanese and they mix in quite a bit of english as well in almost all of their songs. welcome fellow maidiac. they have a website and a considerable wiki page on them as well - lots of info out there on them as they have been with us for 7 years now.you may want to listen to 'real existence'. it was the first maid song i heard in 2016 by a youtube suggestion after watching a babymetal video . kicks much ass.link here:ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-9TkHpvaO09c.html
You can find translation of their lyrics here: kafkasjmusic.wordpress.com/2016/11/10/band-maid-yolo/ This song is completely in english (The dragon cries): ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-skEkpogsmE0.html This one has official subtitles: (Choose me) :ru-vid.com/video/%D0%B2%D0%B8%D0%B4%D0%B5%D0%BE-HcqitbXgigU.html
If you want to check out song lyrics for B-M, I would suggest using this website ( kafkasjmusic.wordpress.com/ ), since I guess it's quite hard to translate Japanese into English in a way that it makes sense, and for what I've seen I think the girl from this website does a good job. Cheers!
Here’s a (Must Read) recent 2019 official interview where every member talks in detail about themselves- their family and upbringing, what got them into music, influences, past associations and various struggles eventually leading to BM’s formation. They also speak about their growth as a band since their debut, individual roles within the band, and their personal aspirations and endgoals for their careers and as musicians even beyond Band Maid. www.reddit.com/r/BandMaid/comments/irq3tq/i_just_discovered_this_band_and_need_some_pointers/ This is handsdown the best and most comprehensive interview/bio of them so far. They are often quite reserved and awkward in their interviews even in the Japanese ones and the language barrier only adds to it, but the interviewer here seems to have nailed it. Just reading it makes it obvious that the vibe there must’ve been great and everyone seemed very comfortable and frank in their conversation. I came across this by chance just recently and have been trying to share this everywhere as its too good to be missed. If possible, please help spread this around the fanbase.
You gotta check out their live performances! They are actually better live! If you like MVs then blooming is really good. If you want one of their harder songs check out the RINNE MV. If you want one of their fastest possibly most complex songs check out the MV they just dropped Different. It's being used as an opening for an anime. If you want an instrumental check out On Set. Finally if you want a slower track check out Wonderland.
